photo: Jeroen Apers photo: Jeroen Apers Tower Flower Rue Albert Roussel Paris "Flower Tower" is a bit of a misnomer since bamboo isn't a regularly flowering plant (bamboo generally dies after flowering, and most species are long lived, so you connect the dots), but it sounds better than "Bamboo Building" I guess This Parisian apartment block features a green facade of bamboo planted in 380 large concrete pots embedded in the balconies Project is not public! m² Edouard François OPAC de Paris Apers photo: Jeroen Apers 5

photo: Edou Bonnema photo: Edou Bonnema Gymnasium Maurice Berlemont Rue de l'orillon Paris For all inhabitants and young people in the neighborhood of "Fontaine Au Roi - Orillon" architect Emmanuel Saadi was commissioned with the design of the new gymnasium Maurice Berlemont The complex is open not only during school time, but also after school, for the young to go play and encourage social integration Before it was built, there was a playground on the site In order to reduce noise levels, the playground was converted into a gymnasium with walls made of glass bricks, allowing the inside to be seen from the outside and vice-versa It had to be a very public, open and free building The project was financed with public funds of the city of Paris A questionnaire was made to analyze the inhabitants most prominent wishes It took three years of dialogue and reflection between the local politicians of the 11e quarter and the department of Youth and Sports of the municipality of Paris, before a decision was made and start this project photo: Edou Bonnema m² Emmanuel Saadi City of Paris Edou_Bonnema Monday, Tuesday, Thursday Friday and Saturday from 08:00 22:00 h Wednesday 09:00 22:00 h and Sunday from 08:00 18:00 h for more information visit: wwwsportparisfr or wwwmairie11parisfr Go to Metro Belleville, then walk down the Rue Louis Bonnet 6

photo: Andre Staalenhoef photo: Andre Staalenhoef Hotel Fouquet's Barrière Avenue George V Paris Located in the heart of Paris, this 80-room luxury hotel is designed with a new moulded façade as replica of a Haussmann façade A typical Hausmann building on the Champs Elysess was copied so the new hotel would seamlessly fit into its surroundings The corner addition connects to its neighbours, but the existing façade does not relate to its interior, the architect punched new wholes into the concrete where necessary The combination of this copied, moulded concrete façade with pierced and stuck-on modern additions, make a very intriguing image photo: Edou Bonnema m² Edouard François Groupe Lucien Barrière Edou_Bonnema Hotel only for guests; metro George V (line 1) stops in Front of the Hotel The hotel is on the corner of Champs-Elysées and Georges V avenues 7

photo: bryan boyer photo: bryan boyer Corso Italia Housing Corso Italia Milan Italy A cluster of mid-rise towers containing houses and office spaces, this project looms over Corso Italia with a commanding street presence The form and façade both exhibit careful detailing in the form of subtle inflections It is located on one of the main streets in the centre of Milan It is built on a difficult to infill site; an irregular block in a dense urban context The design successfully combines the complex program of housing, ground floor commercial use, parking space and offices The 5 building parts are arranged in such a way that together they define several public and private courtyards and streets Project is not public! 1956 Luigi Moretti City of Milan bryan photo: bryan boyer Take the L3 metro to Missori and then walk 3 blocks south on Corso Italia Building will be on your left at the intersection of Via Rugabella 8

photo: Jean Marie Monthiers photo: Jean Marie Monthiers Plaine Saint Denis Police Station Rue du Landy Paris Saint Denis, a former industrial area located in the northern suburbs of Paris, suffers from public safety problems This has led to a new kind of police station designed to meet local conditions X-TU's police station is the outcome of a rigorous analysis of issues like security, communications and circulation This resulted in 2 completely segregated entrances The first is intended for visitors, who enter a lobby through a monitored security entrance The second entrance is reserved for police personnel, and provides access through a secured courtyard into a second lobby that communicates with all floors and internal services While its functionality is beyond reproach, the St Denis police station also offers an interesting, sculptural silhouette formed by a set of interlocking volumes Their sides are in black glazed concrete or in serigraphed white glass, the pattern density of which provides opacity or transparency depending on the degree of confidentiality required photo: Jean Marie Monthiers 2006 X-TU ure Ministère de l'intérieur Xavier_Gonzalez 9

photo: Philippe Ruault photo: Philippe Ruault Centre Chorégraphique National Avenue Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart Aix-en-Provence This building, designed by French architect Rudy Ricciotti, is an atypical project, fascinating for the ambiguous play it generates between envelope and structure It is built on a very limited plot (35x18 metres), which it fully occupies The centre is spread over four levels: a basement containing an auditorium, the foyer and administration on the ground floor and rehearsal studios on the first and second floors Since the structure could not rest on any internal support, it had to be banished to the periphery It consists of a web of block-stained black concrete posts, positioned diagonally and criss-crossing at the horizontal levels, that encloses the whole of the parallelepiped volume Behind the concrete mantle is a second façade of large glass panels spanning the full height of each storey and providing the dancers inside with a panoramic view of the city Like a ghostly, charred silhouette, the volume emerges from a composite landscape photo: Philippe Ruault 2006 Rudy Ricciotti Mairie d'aix en Provence, communauté du pays d'aix Xavier_Gonzalez 10

photo: Maarten Helle photo: Maarten Helle Espace Citroën Avenue des Champs-Elysées Paris The car manufacturer with the handsomest (red-and-white) garages is undoubtedly Citroën Following in the footsteps of founder André Citroën, who regarded architecture as an important part of his marketing strategy, architect Manuelle Gautrand built the company the ultimate showroom on the Champs-Elysées in Paris Gautrand used the glass of the faceted window as a symbol of the marque's creativity and innovativeness She fused the corporate logo with the façade structure: the frame is made up of inverted V-shapes Behind the skin is the spectacle of a completely open space in which cars are displayed in a metres-high tower 2006 Manuelle Gautrand Citroën HelleBeelden photo: Maarten Helle Located in the 8th arrondissement Metro Station 'Franklin D Roosevelt' is close by, as well as 'George V' 11

photo: Tina Behnke photo: Dusapin Leclerq Visium Avenue Aristide Briand Arcueil A diverse program is built for meetings, conferences and offices in the heart of the La Vache Noire business district, south-west of the city centre of Paris This office building is part of a greater whole, the so called "Portes d Arcueil", which is an ambitious program to expand the economic activities in this area: with m2 of offices, m2 commercial space, 500 new apartments and new public spaces The project is intended to enhance the public life, with culture and commercial activities in a new business area, on the gates of the French Capital The office of Dusapin-Leclerq is responsible for the masterplan of the area The office of Devilliers was invited to design the Plein Sud de Thalès, on the southern end of the site The design is characterized by its extreme purity and high-tech façade The cube office block has a double glazed façade photo: Tina Behnke Project is not public! m² Main designer, Urban planner Christian Devillers Dusapin Leclercq Tina Behnke SADEV 94 + ICADE Tertial Tina_Behnke A special exhibition is made at the Maison des Portes d Arcueil to give information on the project : avenue Laplace à Arcueil 76 For more information, see With the bus RER line B, stop at "Laplace" The office building is situated in the heart of La Vache Noire business district (near the RN20) in Arcueil 12

photo: Hervé Abbadie photo: Hervé Abbadie Médiathèque Robert Calméjane Grande Rue Villemomble The site for the new library in Villemomble is that of a defunct minor château of which, today, only the estate gardens remain in the form of a public park The two main elements of the programme, four multi-purpose rooms for private hire and one multifunctional library, are separated from one another in order to reduce noise nuisance This programmatic schism creates an architecture that appears volumetrically fragmented from the garden but is more unified from the street side Schizofrenic, its urban face is an opaque linear screen composed of alternating panels of polished concrete and glass, evocative of stacked industrial containers In contrast, its park face is completely transparent thanks to the open volumes of the reading rooms The overall silhouette of the building is reminiscent of French mansions with their vast slate roofs The presence of the new building in the park fills a historical emptiness and awakens the submerged memory of the bygone château photo: Hervé Abbadie 2004 Brenac & Gonzalez & Associés Ville de Villemomble Xavier_Gonzalez 13

photo: Georges Fessy photo: Georges Fessy Ministere de la Culture Rue Saint-Honoré Paris The aim of this project was to regroup on a single site all the services of the Ministry of Culture, previously dispersed over 17 different locations around the city Francis Soler resolved the major constraints -disparity in dates and indifferent architectural style of the two existing buildings- into elements of unity and identity This unity is omnipresent in the internal space planning: the two buildings have been remodelled in their substance to require the obtained density, optimize work spaces and interconnect the different floor levels The other unifying element is purely architectural In the manner of Christo, Soler has wrapped the old buildings, walls and roof included, in a continuous organic-weave mesh of steel lace Without entirely effacing underlying differences, this stainless steel veil imparts continuity to the disparate volumes It hangs like a loose net detached from the elevations, its appearance changing in phase with the sun, shadows, day and night photo: Georges Fessy Public access unknown! 2004 Main designer, Interior architect Landscape designer General consultant Francis Soler Frédéric Druot Michel Desvignes Patrick Blanc Ministry of Culture Xavier_Gonzalez 14

photo: Benoît Fougeirol photo: Philippe Ruault RATP Bus Centre Rue du Bas Marin Thiais Located in Thiais the RATP controls all the bus lines of the south and east of Paris The centre accommodates 300 buses, 800 bus drivers forward through the building every day, plus the administrative staff The building appears like a monolith with rounded edges, polished somehow The facade is clad with Ductal, concrete but a dazzling sheet of concrete, which is folded over the building, continues over the terrace rooftop to the ground floor on the road Combined with the structural qualities of the material, the building has neither a beginning nor an end The result is a dense building, inert, deaf, and enigmatic as the hull of a Russian submarine in the waters of Murmansk The concrete hull is cut out with a cutter putting at sharp, revealing cavities of reflective and coloured glass under the concrete crust Treated with silver mirror dots, chromatics of the glass products are inspired by the tinted curtain wall frontages of the office buildings which border the main road photo: Benoît Fougeirol m² ecdm RATP (Rêgle autonome des transports parisiens) ECDM_es 15

photo: Piotr Krajewski Rue des Suisses Rue des Suisses Paris This is the first project in Paris by the Herzog De Meuron team on an unusual site in the 14th Arrondisement not far from Gare Montparnesse The result of a 1966 competition sponsored by the Paris public housing agency Régie Immobilière de la Paris (RVIP), the project is built on three interconnected parcels that include infill sites on two sides of a long perimeter block that face a long narrow plot on the interior of the block The infill buildings are built to the neighbourhood height of 7 floors, while the interior slab is only 3 floors in height Entry to the interior of the block is made beneath the infill buildings In addition to the 4 story difference in building height, the long narrow block designed as a free-standing element in a long narrow garden and is protected with curving rolling wooden blinds that are in sharp contrast to the folding metal blinds that cover the façades of the street buildings The three buildings contain about 60 flats and basement parking Project is not public! 2000 Herzog and De Meuron pkrajewski_pl photo: Piotr Krajewski 17/19 Rue des Suisses/Rue Jonquoy, 14th 18

photo: Stéphane Delangle photo: Stéphane Delangle Two Elementary Schools extension Rue Armand Silvestre Courbevoie Two elementary schools share the same block and playground, located in a residential district, outside of Paris BP architects proposed to design not one but two extensions Two buildings with the same construction, twin structures arranged perpendicular to each other so that the observer has the strange sensation of seeing the same object from two different angles As a result, the playground area was enlarged and even included a vegetable garden These two structures, with their highly contemporary style, recompose the city block, making it more compact and lively The façades of the metal boxes are covered with anodized aluminium clapboard in three 3 colours: champagne, bronze and gold, giving the buildings an attractive, sparkling look The structure as a whole produced an impression of abstract vitality This is therefore the story of a twofold accomplishment architectural as well as symbolic photo: Stéphane Delangle Project is not public! m² BP ures City of Courbevoie MI_MOA 30

photo: Jean-Marie Monthiers photo: Jean-Marie Monthiers Company Headquarters Rue de la Garenne Blettée Saint Mesmes The primary intention of the programme was to explore the relationship between the building and its surroundings and between the building users and the landscape One of the main design concerns was the buildings environmental adaptation and appropriation The site slopes down three meters towards the west, offering attractive views over the neighboring hills Our solution was to create two hierarchically related volumes placed perpendicularly to one another along a north-south axis and following the slope of the site One of the volumes contains flexible work spaces while the other encloses a workshop, exhibition space and storage areas The offices occupy the upper area of the site and are raised above ground level to provide an impression of lightness photo: Jean-Marie Monthiers Project is not public! m² LAN Marchesini SARue de la Garenne Blettée margherita 31
