3 photo: Andre Staalenhoef photo: Luc Boegly Jussieu 16M Atrium Place Jussieu Paris photo: Luc Boegly Jussieu Campus consists out of a regular grid of 6-floor wings and is generally decried as an architectural failure The hollow space under the buildings enables wind to build up its force, the regular grid plan is confusing and polluted with asbestos It has increasingly degraded, leaving its facade covered in graffiti The new 16M building extends and completes the grid plan that architect Edouard Albert designed in the 60s; based on the existing system, but at the same time deforms it: where Albert laid out a single patio, Périphériques planned two The façades are glazed on the same pattern as Albert s existing building But the glass metal skin composed of ten types of panels perforated with circular holes of different sizes give the façades complex and variable depth At ground floor, the existing slab on which the university buildings are built folds up in an origami-like orange ramp to even up the levels in a fluid movement Floor area/size m² Périphériques es EPA Jussieu peripheriques The campus is served by the Paris Métro station Jussieu, as well as numerous bus lines 3

10 photo: Viktor Ramos photo: Viktor Ramos Villa Savoye Rue de Villiers Poissy The Villa Savoye, also called "Les Heures Claires" in Poissy, which was built by Charles-Edouard Jeanneret, better known as Le Corbusier, and Pierre Jeanneret between 1928 and 1931, is considered as one of his major works, and even as one of the masterpieces of 20th century architecture The villa was designed for a rich insurer, Mr Savoye, and was the result of several years of formal research which revolutionised the traditional codes of residential architecture The building was constructed in the form of a white parallelepiped with a smooth exterior surface punctuated by a row of windows It is supported by thin pillars and topped by a roof-terrace The house sits in the middle of a field, a prime example of a new architectural vision photo: Viktor Ramos 1931 Main designer, Le Corbusier Pierre Jeanneret Mr Savoye boeboe (subject to change!) 17 photo: Hervé Abbadie photo: Hervé Abbadie Student Housing Ménilmontant Rue de Ménilmontant 109/ Paris While climbing the steep and bustling road of Ménilmontant the student residence slowly reveals itself in a series of paradoxes: deeply rooted in the context of the Parisian apartment block, it also stands out as something unexpected and intriguing The strict street alignment imposed by planning regulation is punctured by a two-storey porch, bursting with colour and light, begging the viewer to look deep into the heart of the Parisian block where a hidden world awaits: two rows of former workshops, rehabilitated into 16 loft apartments, a street-like space between The spatial connection between these workshops and the porch, accentuated by a topographical shift, provides a vibrant outdoor gathering space for the students Here, a consistent approach to colour and lighting is established that subsequently continues throughout all of the building's circulation zones photo: Hervé Abbadie Project is not public! 20 photo: Luc Boegly photo: Luc Boegly Nouveau Casino Rue Oberkampf Paris In a very dense urban setting, the task was to create an auditorium at the back of a fine early 20th-century Parisian café with a sound capacity of 135dbA The principle chosen was that of the box within a box, thus preserving the image and atmosphere of the Café Charbon which, with the construction of kitchens on the ground floor and basement levels, acquired a restaurant in the process The Nouveau Casino, located behind the mirror in the main room, is designed in a modern style, in reference to the film Star Wars The main room of the Nouveau Casino is designed as a deep cavern with uneven walls covered in black untreated steel, along which there is a very long, organic and gentle shaped bar in luminous translucent resin A mezzanine above the entrance offers another perception of the space There is a stage at the end of the hall for musicians On the surface of the thick acoustic area, 6 videoprojectors emerge from the deformed triangles, their lenses positioned against loopholes photo: Luc Boegly Floor area/size m², Artist, Interior architect, Landscape architect, Urban planner Périphériques es peripheriques Paris-Comptoirs Underground Line 2 - Ménilmontant Underground Line 3 Parmentier or Rue Saint-Maur 20

22 photo: Périphériques architectes photo: Périphériques architectes Pink Ghost Place Furstemberg Paris In the framework of the second edition of the Contemporary Art Exposition Saint-Germain-des-Près, Périphériques es were invited to participate with an installation on Place Furstemberg The Pink Ghost was a 'sculptural transformation' of the centre of the square with a 'preservation' stance Made of pink epoxy, the installation enveloped four trees and a streetlight to a height of 25 metres and covered the entire surface of the small central square While the covering work was being done, the architects cleverly 'slipped' about 20 chairs and five coffee tables under the resine, to turn this exterior urban space into an 'interior' lounge/salon situated outside, in a way that raises questions about the status of public space in the city After its removal from the square, Pink Ghost was rebuilt in the French pavilion at the Biennale of ure in Venice, as a memory of the plaza and its new use photo: Périphériques architectes Floor area/size m², Artist, Interior architect, Landscape architect, Urban planner Périphériques es peripheriques Comité Saint-Germain-des-Près The work has been deconstructed 22

32 photo: goa photo: goa Social Housing Rue Marcadet Rue Marcadet Paris The building inserts itself into the îlot (block), originally meant to be demolished (îlot insalubre) in its whole The design preserves the identity and picturesque character of the block The 70 apartments form an urban band that runs around the Rue Ordener and the Rue Marcadet It surrounds the existing (and renovated) building on the Rue Émile-Duployé, where it decomposes to allow a view on the inner court garden The architects have addressed the new thermal insulation regulations and placed solar panels on the rooftops The façades are animated by the composition of small and large windows in a free pattern On certain points they extrude from the building in bright green, on other case they are embodied within the soft grey aluminium skin Public access unknown! 2010 X-TU ure goa photo: goa 32

33 photo: Julien Lanoo photo: Julien Lanoo Student Residence RIVP Rue Pajol Paris The main idea was to meet the challenge of using a single architectural gesture to provide urban integration and optimised comfort for the future occupants while, at the same time, creating a friendly and informal complex The building's position directed the research towards the development of lively elevations providing views through to the center of the plot and an appreciation of this inner space The creation of two clefts and the transparency of the ground floor level resulting from the bike park meet this ambition, defining a project reminiscent of the buildings to be found in Paris' inner suburbs The project is based on the party walls defining the different building heights This movement creates a square central courtyard, providing the project with its key element The circulation system is very clear: 4 vertical circulation points on the 4 corners of the plot All circulation areas are naturally lit to allow the landings to become places where people can meet one another photo: Julien Lanoo Project is not public! 36 photo: Stéphane Chalmeau photo: Daniel Rousselot Boucicaut Mixed Social Program Rue de la Convention 60-64, Paris Situated on the old site of the Boucicaut Hospital in the 15th arrondissement of Paris, the project is made of two symmetrical plots on Rue de la Convention: the plot A can be found at the angle with Rue de Lourmel and plot B is at the angle formed with Rue de Lacordaire The program is a pilot-project for the town of Paris, integrating workshops, commerce, medical residences for aged people, a day-care psychiatric centre and a shelter for abused women, all to be found in the first four levels of the plots The last three floors are occupied by social housing Playing with zinc and brick façades, the two buildings dialogue with what was kept from the old hospital and the roofs of the buildings around them The rhythm of the openings, the quality of the materials used, the vegetation and the suspended footbridges manage to create architecture that takes the work integration far beyond its formal expression, giving it a social sense and relating it more to the people it houses photo: Daniel Rousselot Project is not public! 37 photo: Adrià Goula photo: Adrià Goula The Factory Emile Zola Paris When addressing this project for an office building, it started off by thinking about the entire city block as a series of buildings with spaces between them to introduce light and air into the empty space In this way we began to see the building as a mass that formed Rue Emile Zola, like a complex volume The architects had some prior experience with this type of building in terms of dimensions, depth, and so on, that went almost automatically into the drawings and models The history and the setting of the building also have to be taken into account In this case, The architects were looking at the former Renault plant, which immediately brought to mind old stories of May 1968 and J-L Godard's film 'Éloge de l'amour' that was made there shortly before the factory was demolished Project is not public!
