6 photo: Piotr Krajewski Rue des Suisses Rue des Suisses Paris This is the first project in Paris by the Herzog De Meuron team on an unusual site in the 14th Arrondisement not far from Gare Montparnesse The result of a 1966 competition sponsored by the Paris public housing agency Régie Immobilière de la Paris (RVIP), the project is built on three interconnected parcels that include infill sites on two sides of a long perimeter block that face a long narrow plot on the interior of the block The infill buildings are built to the neighbourhood height of 7 floors, while the interior slab is only 3 floors in height Entry to the interior of the block is made beneath the infill buildings In addition to the 4 story difference in building height, the long narrow block designed as a free-standing element in a long narrow garden and is protected with curving rolling wooden blinds that are in sharp contrast to the folding metal blinds that cover the façades of the street buildings The three buildings contain about 60 flats and basement parking Project is not public! 2000 Herzog and De Meuron pkrajewski_pl photo: Piotr Krajewski 17/19 Rue des Suisses/Rue Jonquoy, 14th 6

7 photo: goa photo: goa Apartment Building by Le Corbusier Rue Nungesser et Coli Paris This apartment building in Paris - Immeuble Molitor Appartement - was constructed in 1934 with on top the apartment of Le Corbusier himself He lived there his whole life, next to the Parc des Princes It is an interesting building, similar to the Clarté Building in Geneva with its glass façade with rigid exterior This stands in contrast to his own apartment on top, which has roof vaults, old brick walls in his atelier and a little roof terrace Project is public! 17 Cartier Headquarters Boissy d'anglas Paris A complex of buildings in the heart of the 'golden triangle' (the arrondissement of paris), close to the church of la Madeleine and Place de la Concorde The project was conceived as spatial and technical innovation whose source of inspiration is the city's covered streets and promenades The exteriors of the buildings are combined in such a way that observers' perception of space changes each time, creating an interior block street with three accesses and their corresponding addresses: 30, rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré; 33-37, rue Boissy d'anglas; and 3, rue de Surène The façades are of clear glass and serigraphed glass, while the paving is of pietra serena programme: offices, shops, showroom, restaurant and bar, a multi-purpose hall, a gymnasium and parking space for 450 vehicles in the basement Public access unknown! 18 Axa Offices Rabelais Paris Refurbishment project of an existing building provide new, transparent façades The office block includes two basements, a ground floor, a mezzanine and 8 upper floors The result is an imposing volume with a set back from the street alignment and façades that establish a horizontal rhythm in which solid breastwork alternates with strips of metal-framed glass The new project endows the building with an air of modernity, tempered by the double glass façade that creates transparency and depth Public access unknown! 19 Costes K Hotel Avenue Kléber Paris By virtue of its privileged location near the Trocadéro, this 4-star hotel offers its clients many practical advantages The full-height transparent double glass skin of the main façade constitutes a curtain of greenery acting as a visual and sound barrier that assures the comfort of guests The building is articulated around a marble patio with a black granite pond from which plants and sculptures in the form of columns emerge The materials used in the interiors are sycamore wood on ceilings and walls, teak in the swimming pool and solarium, and black granite and light-coloured marble for the flooring The program includes 83 apartments ranging from 25 to 55 sqm, restaurant, conference and reading rooms, health club with body-building gym, sauna and heated swimming pool Public access unknown! 20 GAN Insurances Company Offices Ave Robert Schumann Paris An office building for an insurance company laid out over eleven floors: three basements, ground floor and seven upper storeys The plot is bounded by two streets, and the scheme incorporates the interior courtyard characteristic of the buildings in the area in order to provide all the rooms with daylight The building has a U-shaped plant, with the courtyard in the centre The two arms of the U are symmetrical, grouping together the double system of vertical communications and services The top three floors on each of the two streets form two stepped-back towers, in accordance with local planning regulations, concentrating vertical circulation in the centre so as to leave the office spaces on the exterior The facades on each of the two streets are also identical, consisting of a double skin of glass which draws a smooth convex line in contrast to the concave line of the ground floor and the setbacks of the upper floors Public access unknown! 1992 Ricardo_Bofill_Taller_de_Arquitectu ra 20

21 Parfums Christian Dior Headquarters Avenue Hoche Paris An integral remodeling project for a building from the 60s which will conserve the whole of the occupied volume and the structure, while constructing a new underground car park The design for a new façade in natural stone and glass took as its starting point the creation of an appropriate image for the perfume company that would be in keeping with the context of the other buildings on Avenue Hoche The stone part of the construction acts like a frame around the double glass skin, in an allusion to the setting of a precious gem and to the sophisticated world of Paris fashion Public access unknown! 1991 Ricardo_Bofill_Taller_de_Arquitectu ra 21

22 Taller de Arquitectura Paris Office d'enghien Paris A conversion scheme for an old building to transform it into the new headquarters of the Taller de Arquitectura in Paris Originally constructed to house the editorial offices of a Paris newspaper, it was later converted into a theatre The spacious interior of the cubic volume was remodeled to obtain 900 m2 (1076 sq yards) of floor area distributed over three floors and laid out around a landscaped interior courtyard The reception area is located on a fourth, lower, level The work spaces on these four levels have been divided into sectors according to activity: reception and design The suspended floors accommodate all the cable and wiring of the computerized office, in addition to giving acoustic insulation The interior design, with its use of glass partitions, make it easy to appreciate the spaciousness of the working environment The built-in cupboards of stained wood with their metal details store the office's drawings and other documents Public access unknown! 24 Les Echelles du Baroque Pl de Catalogne Paris 274 apartments grouped around two interior courtyards, laid out in separate 7-storey buildings with distinct characteristics: L'Amphithéâtre and Les Colonnes The ground floor of the two buildings is occupied by shops, and has an underground car park for 300 cars L'Amphithéâtre was designed as subsidized housing, and Les Colonnes as apartments to be sold on the open market The geometry of the apartments is based on a combination of modules The basic module is 65 m2, equivalent to a three-bedroom apartment All of the houses have dual orientation The interior façade of the houses which delimit the elliptical plaza takes the form of a curtain wall, with a rhythmic sequence of glass columns which makes it possible to provide every apartment with a glazed window bay Some of the apartments are laid out over two levels, and have an interior balcony opposite the curtain wall Public access unknown!
