2 Schaulager Ruchfeldstrasse 19 CH-4142 Basel The Schaulager ('viewing warehouse') is neither museum nor traditional warehouse It keeps the Emanuel Hoffmann collection in optimal condition and is primarily accessible for specialists: conservators, curators, researchers etc The heavy outer wall is built up in layers and its outer surface scratched, exposing the pebbles excavated on site This material is not only a visual expression of weight and storage but also, as a result of its great inertia, an essential factor in the interior climate control On one side the box is somewhat indented, creating a forecourt, so that the entrance side is visible from great distance It appears to be guarded by a small building with a gabled roof The courtyard-like space radiates urbanism and publicness Schaulager is thus not simply an anonymous box on the urban periphery, but rather a place that is active and self-confident, expanding the public dimension of the city of Basel to the south, towards the new district of Dreispitz/Münchenstein Project is not public! 3 Kirchner Museum Ernst Ludwig Kirchner Platz 1 CH-7270 Davos Created to house the art of the German expressionist painter Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, the museum s 4 double-height volumes connected by a lower volume, blend into the snow-caped, mountainous landscape of Davos, with a varying opaque, translucent and clear glass cladding Natural light enters through a translucent ceiling into a plenum space above the galleries Photo-electronic sensors detect too much daylight and shades are used to block off the light When there is too little light artificial illumination is directed to bounce off of the opaque ceiling of the plenum and indirectly and atmospherically into the galleries Between the 4 exhibition volumes is the darker circulation space that punctually opens up framed views of the landscape It is the first major commission of Zurich architects Annette Gigon & Mike Guyer The sleek, nevertheless highly functional construction of glass, concrete, steel and wood is neighbored by 2 other of their designs: the Sportscentre and wooden Werkhof Project is public! 4 Sportzentrum Talstrasse Davos wwwdavosch Replacing the 1930s wooden skating-rink building by Rudolf Gabarel destroyed by a fire in 1991, the modern sports centre, situated in the centre of Davos, is sporting ground, grandstand, accommodation, offices, surgery and restaurant all in one It combines professional training and competition conditions and accommodation; the Time-Out Restaurant and support are situated on the ground floor, with sport's facilities above and apartments on the top Their use is expressed on the exterior: combined bare concrete and two layers of wood cladding, the inner painted yellow and the outer untreated The interior echoes the exterior: the use of yellows, greens, blues, oranges and greens (designed together with artist Adrian Schiess), contrasted against both exposed concrete and natural wood furniture From the big sun terrace of the restaurant you have a wonderful view onto the natural ice rink Gigon & Guyer also built the Kirchner Museum and wooden Maintenance building just next-door Project is public! 5 Werkhof Talstrasse Davos The wooden workshop next to the Sportscentre of Davos was built just two years later, and the material and detailing show their resemblance This is the storage, carwash and park-space for the material, cars and trucks used by the municipality to (re)move snow On the first floor are offices and meeting rooms They are situated in the overhanging parts of the building These overhanging parts make sure that the exits of the car park are easily accessible, even with lots of snow fall The building is made out of a concrete structure which is enveloped by a wooden pattern of boards that have different widths and are set apart at different openings Some windows have fixed exterior sunscreens; wooden lamellas, operable on the inside The wooden skin seems to move, and gives the otherwise very utile and industrial building a very friendly appearance Project is not public! 1999 Gigon Guyer Architekten Davos Tourismus Train: Swiss Federal Railways, SBB, from Zurich via Landquart Davos is 2:20h See wwwsbbch/en for timetable information Stop at station Davos Dorf or Davos Platz Car: Davos is 145 km from Zurich: see wwwdavosch for detailed driving directions 5

6 photo: Walter Mair photo: Walter Mair Charterhouse Ittingen Kartause Ittingen Warth A short distance south of Stein-am-Rhein and well worth a visit is Kartause Ittingen, a former Charterhouse (Carthusian monastery) out in the countryside near Warth, some 6km south over a ridge from Stein-am-Rhein From 1461 until 1868, the old buildings were home to a community of between twelve and fifteen Carthusian monks; recently restored after decades of neglect, the complex today houses the Ittinger Museum (Mon Fri 2 5pm, Sat & Sun 11am 5pm; Fr5), which sheds light on the life of the Carthusian order The monks lived a life of extreme austerity, taking all meals except Sunday lunch alone in their cell, having each day divided into strict periods of work, rest and prayer (including a three-hour service every night from 1130pm, and never more than four-and-a-half hours sleep at a stretch), and remaining committed by oath to silence at all times The restored rooms of the monastery begin directly opposite the museum entrance with the stunning Rococo church Project is public! 7 photo: Tschuggen Spa photo: Tschuggen Spa Tschuggen Bergoase Sonnenbergstrasse Arosa "A spa is very much like a sacred space," says Botta The Tschuggen Bergoase Spa is carved into a mountain 1,800 m above sea level and runs over 4 floors The interior walls are clad in Arosa granite The building is topped by a series of 9 eye-catching "light trees" sail-like structures that capture natural light "At night, they are magnificently illuminated and shine like beacons They expose spaces to light that would not otherwise be illuminated And although the Spa is carved into a mountain, overall it is not a grotto in that it is defined by open spaces with smooth walls The concept is that of a sanctuary a place to escape" The Bergoase Spa is next to the five-star Tschuggen Grand Hotel, close to the ski slopes Hotel and spa are linked by a glass bridge that carries guests into the building through a second-floor reception area The architecture mixes an open-plan design where you can see down onto all 4 floors from the uppermost level and private treatment spaces photo: Tschuggen Spa Project is public! 10 photo: Marieke Mannens photo: Marieke Mannens REHAB Basel Im Burgfelderhof Basel You expect clinics to look, well, clinical, modernist, austerely immaculate boxes, hygienically white inside and out REHAB Basel is a privately run rehabilitation clinic for patients with spinal-cord or brain injuries, they can stay here up to 18 months It appears residential and natural, though not with a funky, down-home earthiness, but crispy modern Here, oak, pine, larch, and ironwoods enclose and screen exterior walls, and a rectilinear plan brings daylight and landscape into its precincts through courtyards, grassy roofs, glazed walls, upper-level decks, and skylights The double and single rooms have daylight from above and an outside balcony The indoor swimming pool offers views into the sky from a pyramid-like dome above The floors are very wide, open giving wheelchair-bound patients a sense of autonomy Almost a place where anyone would like to live photo: Marieke Mannens Project is not public! 13 photo: Wehrli Mueller Baumgartner Window Factory Extension Flurstrasse Hagendorn Just as their windows attempt to dissolve the boundary between inside and outside, so G Baumgartner AG wanted to avoid any sharp divide between the (substantial) extension of their window factory and the neighbouring Reuss-Lorze area Keen to spare the vulnerable natural landscape, the client engaged an architect/landscape architect team to design a building that would create a balance between public and private space, ecological and economic demands, architecture and landscape The solution operates in two directions To compensate for the newly built surface, the overhanging roof was planted with grass so that it appears as a green meadow that merges with the landscape In front of the actual glass façade, wooden frames were placed At present they frame the landscape, but in time they will turn into hedges as they become overgrown by the vegetation planted below photo: Wehrli Mueller Project is not public! 2006 Graber & Steiger Architekten G Baumgartner AG Kirsten_Hannema 13

17 photo: Hannes Henz photo: Hannes Henz Theater 11 Thurgauerstrasse Zurich 'A case of cannibalism in architecture' is what EM2N architect Daniel Niggli calls his conversion of the Stadthof 11 in Zurich-Oerlikon into a theatre for musicals The new building incorporated everything of the old theatre it could use, though that was little more than the stage house and the cellar, and gave it state-of-the-art technology Faced with the large buildings of its surroundings and the open space in between, the theatre responds without copying their scale Its highest corner juts forward, opening up at the base like a shark's jaws From this corner, the dark casing of perforated sheet metal enveloping both the outer walls and the roof, angles downward until, by the time it gets to the back wall, it is down to the level of the single-family homes there Piercing the perforated sheet-metal shell, a few large windows frame particular views into the building In the evening, light shines through the many small openings in between, which are visible only in outline by day photo: Hannes Henz Project is public! 2006 EM2N MCH Messe Zuerich Axel_Simon Depend on the agenda Check the website for information on current events Located in Oerlikon, an industrial district in Zurich's north, across the street from the Velodrome and indoor Stadium Public transport: S-Bahn Lines S2, S5, S6, S7, S8, S14, S16 until Bahnhof Oerlikon then take Bus lines 63/94 or Tram line 11 until Messe/Hallenstadion 17

18 photo: Heinrich Helfenstein photo: Heinrich Helfenstein Chasa RTR Masanserstrasse Chur The local Radio e Televisiun Ramantscha (RTR) is the main occupant of this mighty six-storey angled structure, which completes a larger architectural quadrangle at the entrance to Chur's old city centre What is remarkable is that despite its expressive and incisive form, the building steps back and puts itself and its presentation at the service of the urban space For the observant viewer the almost banal looking window grid has a few surprises in store It is made of concrete, poured in one piece and subsequently bush-hammered, which is to say rough-hewn with a hammer and chisel - a process that exposes the concrete's main constituent, in this case Rhine gravel The monolithic effect of the façade has its significance: instead of a stuck-on 'outer skin' it becomes a massive, five-storey-high, load-bearing structure, resting on only three supports towards the square and street This static tour de force turns the heftily protruding mass into a light-footed elephant photo: Heinrich Helfenstein Project is not public! 2006 Staufer & Hasler Architekten Chur Municipality + SRG 'idée suisse' Bern Axel_Simon 18

19 photo: Theodor Stalder photo: Theodor Stalder Lochergut Centre Badenerstrasse Zurich This 'urban mountain range', right in the middle of Zurich, consists of six high-rise apartment buildings plus a few lower buildings Unlike the apartments, which were modernized in phases, the rest of the ensemble was much less well maintained The dark shopping passageway ran parallel to two lively streets rather than connecting them, making passers-by avoid it A programmatic switch was made The supermarket, with its inhospitably closed façades, has changed places with the lightand visibility-starved shops along the internal passageway The rooftop terrace, partially cut off in the old situation, has acquired concrete paving and three islands of birch trees enclosed by white wooden benches The emphatically horizontal building mass contrasts with the verticality of the towers and is topped by a striking roof Its freely organized street-level façade appears to be shaped by pedestrian routes, which reduces its bulk and links it spatially with the street Project is public! 2006 Artist pool Architekten Olaf Nicolai (light installation) City of Zurich Axel_Simon photo: Theodor Stalder Bus- and tramlines 2, 3, N12 and N14 all stop right in front of the Lochergut Centre Get off at the 'Lochergut' stop 19
