2 photo: Naomi Schiphorst photo: Naomi Schiphorst Schaulager Ruchfeldstrasse 19 CH-4142 Basel photo: Naomi Schiphorst The Schaulager ('viewing warehouse') is neither museum nor traditional warehouse It keeps the Emanuel Hoffmann collection in optimal condition and is primarily accessible for specialists: conservators, curators, researchers etc The heavy outer wall is built up in layers and its outer surface scratched, exposing the pebbles excavated on site This material is not only a visual expression of weight and storage but also, as a result of its great inertia, an essential factor in the interior climate control On one side the box is somewhat indented, creating a forecourt, so that the entrance side is visible from great distance It appears to be guarded by a small building with a gabled roof The courtyard-like space radiates urbanism and publicness Schaulager is thus not simply an anonymous box on the urban periphery, but rather a place that is active and self-confident, expanding the public dimension of the city of Basel to the south, towards the new district of Dreispitz/Münchenstein Floor area/size m² Emanuel Hoffmann Foundation Laurenz Foundation MI_MOA The building is ONLY OPEN for the public during exhibitions! 3 photo: Marieke Mannens photo: Marieke Mannens REHAB Basel Im Burgfelderhof Basel You expect clinics to look, well, clinical, modernist, austerely immaculate boxes, hygienically white inside and out REHAB Basel is a privately run rehabilitation clinic for patients with spinal-cord or brain injuries, they can stay here up to 18 months It appears residential and natural, though not with a funky, down-home earthiness, but crispy modern Here, oak, pine, larch, and ironwoods enclose and screen exterior walls, and a rectilinear plan brings daylight and landscape into its precincts through courtyards, grassy roofs, glazed walls, upper-level decks, and skylights The double and single rooms have daylight from above and an outside balcony The indoor swimming pool offers views into the sky from a pyramid-like dome above The floors are very wide, open giving wheelchair-bound patients a sense of autonomy Almost a place where anyone would like to live photo: Marieke Mannens Floor area/size m² Main designer, Landscape architect Acoustics consultant August Künzel Martin Lienhard Rehab Basel AG Marieke_Mannens 3

5 photo: Michael Noordam photo: Michael Noordam Chapel of Notre Dame du Haut Rue Chapelle Ronchamp France On a hill, this monumental pilgrimage church 'chapel of our lady of the height' (though on most days more frequented by architectural pilgrims than the intended variety) is a dramatic form with the contrasts of a dark roof, deep windows with coloured glass and the white-washed curved walls of rough masonry Formally and symbolically, this small building is immensely powerful and complex The heaviness of the walls and roof is misleading In Le Corbusier's words: 'The shell has been put on walls which are absurdly but practically thick Inside them however are reinforced concrete columns The shell will rest on these columns but it will not touch the wall A horizontal crack of light 10cm wide will amaze' The place is truly astounding, very impressive photo: Yoshinori Kuwahara Project is public! 1955 Le Corbusier City of Ronchamp Michael_Noordam Hours for the chapel are 10-16h everyday Tél Ronchamp is a little over an hour's drive west of Basel-Mulhouse, the airport near the French/Swiss/German border From Mulhouse follow the A36 southwest to Belfort, then the N19 west to Ronchamp A steep windy road to the North is signposted to the chapel from the center of Ronchamp village 5

6 photo: Goran Potkonjak photo: Goran Potkonjak Novartis office Fabrikstrasse 6 CH-4002 Basel Before the advent of modern scientific methods in chemistry and pharmacology, it was the alchemists who endeavoured to discover remedies for human ailments The office building Peter Märkli architekten designed for pharmaceutical giant Novartis Pharma recalls alchemy's other enterprise, its attempts to turn base metals into gold: or rather, Märkli has succeeded in maintaining that illusion The anodised aluminium of the loadbearing façades has been coated with a champagne-coloured paint and the air ducts that run across the roof are encased in gold-coloured aluminium sandwich board While such non-designed service elements are often an eyesore, here they look like costly treasures photo: Goran Potkonjak 2006 Peter Märkli Novartis Pharma Kirsten_Hannema The campus and offices of Novartis are not open to the public, its like a forbidden city for architecture lovers Maybe you could get in with a tour from the Basel ure Museum but don't count on it The campus is situated next to the river, just before (or after) the Dreirosenbrucke Coming from France: Motorway A35/E60 direction Basel, after customs enter left into the tunnel and follow the signs to Basel St Johann From EuroAirport Basel take Airport Express Bus PTT 50 to Kannenfeldplatz Change to Tram 1 (direction Dreirosenbrücke) stop Novartis Campus Across the street you find the main entrance to the Novartis Campus From Bahnhof Basel, also take tram 1, same way 6

7 photo: General Trade School Vogelsangstrasse Basel Four strikingly different structures are grouped around a courtyard The 1950's building houses the industrial trade school and the Hochschule für Kunst und Gestaltung (College of Art and Design) Also noteworthy are Hans Arps stele in the courtyard, and the stepped pyramid the steps form seats by Armin Hofmann Spectacular vaulted ceiling in the gym hall 1961 Hermann Baur Allgemeine Gewerbeschule und Schule für Gestaltung Marloes_Faber It's close to the railway station "Anschluss Basel-Bad Bahnhof" and quite near to the city centre and Messeplatz Take tram 2/6 and stop at the Gewerbeschule; or Bus 30 to Gewerbeschule 7

8 Apartment building Schutzenmattstrasse Basel Sinuous cast-iron screens are used in the façade of this apartment building They resemble drain grilles This inventive use of unexpected but ordinary and readily available things is typical for the work of "Something mysterious is revealed in the normality of everyday life" 1993 unknown Marloes_Faber Close to the city centre There is a post office opposite the building 8

9 St Jakob Park St Jakobs-Strasse Basel St Jakob Park is the stadium where FC Basel play "Joggeli" as it is nicknamed, has a current capacity of 39'000 seats 's first multi-purpose stadium, was inaugurated in 2001 after just two and half years under construction Situated on the south-eastern edge of the city in extensive park and recreation grounds, the world-renowned Basel architects Herzog & De Meuron have constructed an "experience park", which, with its unique dimension, bold architecture and ultramodern infrastructure, provides the optimum setting for large-scale events It combines a football stadium with shops and restaurants photo: Monique van den Berg Project is public! 2001 Basel United + City of Basel Marloes_Faber Basel United Stadion-Management AG, responsible for the professional marketing of the St Jakob Park, helps to plan and stage events professionally and provide guided tours of the St Jakob Park are offered (to book in advance) It is easy to get there by tram 9

10 photo: Maarten Thewissen photo: Ryan Taube Musuem Tinguely Grenzacherstrasse Basel Jean Tinguely ( ) grew up in Basel and belonged to the Parisian avant-garde in the 1950s and 60s He stimulated and revolutionized the "static" art world with his kinetic works The Museum's permanent collections present a selection of the artist's machine sculptures, reliefs and drawings from all the periods of his career The Museum also offers a varied and lively programme of temporary shows devoted to Tinguely's fellow artists and contemporaries - Bernhard Luginbühl, Niki de Saint Phalle and Yves Klein - and to his models such as Marcel Duchamp and Kurt Schwitters, as well as to related subjects such as contemporary kinetic art photo: Ryan Taube Project is public! 11 photo: Nazar Leskiw photo: Nazar Leskiw Central Signal Box Münchensteinerstrasse Basel This is a railway utility building in Basel, near the Guterbahnhof Wolf called Signal Box and has an exterior cladding of copper strips that are twisted at certain places to admit daylight Herzog and De Meuron won the Pritzker prize in 2001, the jury explained: "The beginnings of most architects practices consists by necessity of small projects with budgets to match It is these early buildings with great constraints that test an architect s talent for original solutions to often ordinary and utilitarian commissions In the case of Jacques Herzog and Pierre de Meuron, the railroad signal box was such a project They transformed a nondescript structure in a railroad yard into a dramatic and artistic work of industrial architecture, captivating both by day and night" 1999 Schweizerische Bundesbahnen SBB, Anlagen Management boeboe photo: Nazar Leskiw 11
