11 Looking for something to do? Check out some of the Winnipeg Architecture Foundation s events! ZAHA HADID: SHE WHO DARES WIN 22 MARCH 2017 AT 7:00 PM 171 MCDERMOT WOMEN IN ARCHITECTURE AND DESIGN 3 MARCH 2017 AT 7:00 PM 266 MCDERMOT ABOUT THE EVENT Join us for First Friday in the Exchange District for the popup exhibit Women in Architecture and Design. Women in Architecture and Design highlights a selection of Manitoba-based women architects, landscape architects, and interior designers from the twentieth-century to the present day. The exhibition opens at 7pm, with free films highlighting women in design beginning at 8pm. The exhibit is part of the WPGARCH a year of celebrating architecture, which is supported by the Canada Council, Manitoba Association of Architects and the Community Fund for Canada s 150th, a collaboration between the Winnipeg Foundation, the Government of Canada, and extraordinary leaders from coast to coast to coast. ABOUT THE EVENT Winnipeg Architecture Foundation presents a series of Women in Design events during March Born in Baghdad in 1950 and based in London, Zaha Hadid was perhaps the most successful female architect there has ever been. She was one of a handful of global superstar designers who have changed the way people think about the world through buildings. Yet this wasn't always the case; Hadid once had a reputation as unbuildable, a 'paper architect' whose projects began as vivid paintings of gravity-defying shapes exploding into the void. How did this extraordinary and pioneering woman - by turns charming, stubborn, visionary yet exacting - come to build the impossible? The film visits her buildings across the globe, from Austria to Azerbaijan to find out what made Zaha Hadid tick. An informal discussion will follow the film. 11

12 February 8, 2017 The Potential Impacts of the Accessibility for Manitobans Act Brian Everton started his lecture with the intention to 'Shock and Awe'. He presented us with a vintage photo from the mid century US that showed a well dressed African American woman and her child in front of a sign that directed where 'blacks' could enter the building. He then presented a photo of a church with a sign stating where people with 'disabilities' could enter the building. The idea is discrimination is based in design. Brian Everton is an independent consultant with an expertise in accessibility, universal design and inclusive design. He sees a human potential that gets overlooked because of their disabilities and that changes can create opportunities for all of us. He outlined the five major standards of change in the work place that will be enacted in the near future; Customer Service, Employment, Information and Communication, Transportation and The Built Environment. He then clarified what the changes would mean, while of the changes would be physical, other changes are educating people about disabilities and how to deal with them. While he did confirmed that there is no money available to help implement these changes, the changes to accommodate a person's disability would be expected to be within reason. An example would be rearranging the location of an employee's desk so they no longer have to climb stairs, rather than going to the expense to install an elevator where there wasn't one required before. Minimum standards still do not give accessibility to all, is something he stressed, they are just minimum standards. He said that we may think we understand disabilities, but, without experiencing what is it like to live with a disabilities we really don't understand. The best training is with found through real contact with a disabled person. The City of Winnipeg design guidelines are also highly recommended because they give the reason why behind the codes. The changes in the workplace environment would be such that the end goal is to have all spaces and attitudes set in place so that persons with disabilities can live out their lives and not have to be treated differently. ~ Jean Gallagher 12

13 2016 End-of-year Building Permit data According to Statistics Canada, the value of all building permits issued in Manitoba in 2016 ended up exceeding $2.6 billion. Permit numbers as a whole were up over 12% compared to 2015, largely driven by a more than 26% increase in the Non-Residential sector. 13
