3 Preface The Jag Mohan Humar Symposium is organized as part of the Annual Conference of the Canadian Society for Civil Engineering, held in Ottawa, Canada on June 15, 2011 to honour the distinguished academic and professional career of Professor Humar. The Symposium is jointly sponsored by the Canadian Society for Civil Engineering and the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Carleton University. While the general field of the Symposium is selected to be Earthquake Engineering, the specific focus is placed on the development of seismic design provisions for the National Building Code of Canada. This is an area where Professor Humar has been active more than a decade, with many valuable contributions to Building Code provisions and the seismic design practice in Canada. The papers included in the proceedings address various aspects of seismic code development, authored by selected members of the Standing Committee on Earthquake Design for the National Building Code of Canada. Professor Humar has made tremendous contributions to Earthquake Engineering in Canada and elsewhere in the world. He is an internationally acclaimed expert on Structural Dynamics and Earthquake Engineering. His book on Dynamics of Structures has been used extensively since 1990 both by the academia and the structural engineering practice. Dr. Humar s excellence in teaching and research has earned him numerous recognitions nationally and internationally. He is the recipient of the Canadian Society for Civil Engineering s Gzowski Medal in 1989, in addition to receiving honourable mention of the same medal in 1999 and 2001, the Whitman Wright Award for outstanding contribution to the application of computers in civil engineering in 2001, and the A.B. Sanderson award for outstanding contributions to structural engineering in Canada in His superior academic achievements were recognized by Carleton University, and he was awarded Chancellor s Professorship in 2002 and the Distinguished Research Professorship title in Dr. Humar mentored a large number of graduate students, supervising 18 Ph.D. and 23 Master s students, many of whom currently hold prominent positions in academia and engineering practice. Professor Humar has been a model academic, an inspiration to young researchers and an outstanding engineer of international stature. 5 Honouring Distinguished Research Professor Jag Mohan Humar As the Chair of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Carleton University, it is my pleasure and honour to write this introduction for the Proceedings of the Jag Mohan Humar Symposium, which took place during the 2011 CSCE Annual Conference in Ottawa, Canada. Professor Humar was the Chair of our department from 1990 to 2000 and his exemplary leadership during this period is one of the main reasons for our department s success today. Because of his hard work and leadership the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering offers some of the most dynamic, innovative and cross-disciplinary undergraduate and graduate programs in Canada leading to Bachelor, Master s and Doctoral degrees in both Civil Engineering and Environmental Engineering. Professor Humar is an internationally recognized scholar in structural dynamics with over 120 journal and conference papers. His well known textbook book titled Dynamics of Structures was re-published in We are pleased that Professor Humar continues to teach his graduate course in dynamics of structures and is still active within the Department as a Distinguished Research Professor. I also want to emphasize another side of Dr. Humar as an active community leader. He serves as the President of the Jain Society of Ottawa Carleton and a member of Ottawa s Multi-faith Council. He is also a founder and active participant in a project on Women Empowerment in India. In recognition of the quality of the project, the Canadian Development Agency provided valuable support to this initiative during its formative years. Dr. Humar is well known for his poetical works in Hindi and has published a book of poems entitled Jeevan ke Rang. I hope that this proceedings not only provides you with valuable scientific and engineering knowledge but also reminds you of Dr. Humar s contributions to academia and to the community. 7 Jag Mohan Humar Ph.D., P.Eng., FCSCE, FEIC, FCAE Dr. Jag Mohan Humar, Distinguished Research Professor of Civil Engineering at Carleton University, Ottawa, Canada has had an outstanding academic career. He received his B.Eng. and M.Tech degrees in India with top honours and a gold medal for first rank in the University. In 1971 he received the Canadian Commonwealth Scholarship for pursuing doctoral studies in Canada. In 1974 he obtained a Ph.D. degree from Carleton University, Ottawa, Canada. In 1975 Dr. Humar joined Carleton University as a faculty member in the Department of Civil Engineering. Dr. Humar became a full professor in 1983, and served as the Chairman of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering from 1989 to Dr. Humar has had an outstanding record in teaching and research and has won several awards for his work. They include Carleton University s Award for Excellence in Teaching, Research Achievement Award, Davidson Dunton Lecturership, Chancellor s Professorship, and John Adjeleian Lecturership. Along with teaching and academic administration, Dr. Humar has also been active in engineering consulting. He served as a special consultant for several outstanding civil engineering projects, including the National Aviation Museum in Ottawa and the SkyDome in Toronto. Dr. Humar has served with distinction on the Canadian Society for Civil Engineering, as well as on several other professional societies including the Engineering Institute of Canada, and the Indian Society for Earthquake Technology. In recognition of his excellence in engineering, and for services rendered to his profession and to Canada Dr. Humar has received the Fellowships of several professional societies of Canada. These include the fellowships of the Canadian Society for Civil Engineering (CSCE), the Engineering Institute of Canada, and the Canadian Academy of Engineering The Canadian Society for Civil Engineering has bestowed several of its honours on Dr. Humar. These include the Gzowski medal for a technical paper on the design of SkyDome, the Whitman Wright Award for outstanding contribution to the application of computers in civil engineering, and the A.B. Sanderson award for outstanding contributions to structural engineering in Canada Dr. Humar s main research interest is in structural dynamics and earthquake engineering. He has published over 120 journal and conference papers in this and related areas. He is also the sole author of a comprehensive text book entitled Dynamics of Structures, first vii

8 published by Prentice Hall, USA in The second edition of the book was published by Balkema Publishers of Netherland in 2002; the third edition of the book is due to arrive in Dr. Humar s research in earthquake engineering has been recognized both nationally and internationally. He is a field referee for many international journals including the ASCE Journals of Structures and Engineering Mechanics, the Journal of Sound and Vibration, and the Canadian Journal of Civil Engineering. He currently serves on the Editorial Board of the International Journal of Structural Dynamics and Earthquake Engineering. Dr. Humar has made outstanding contribution to the field of earthquake engineering. For the past 15 years he has served as a member of the Standing Committee on Earthquake Design of the National Research Council. The committee is responsible for developing the seismic design provisions of the National Building Code of Canada. He has served as the Vice President of the Canadian Association for Earthquake Engineering and is presently a member of its Executive. viii
