PLOT SIZE: Approximately ha State house girls school State house Road Students sick bay Residential building INTRODUCTION THE PROPOSED THE ALUMNI CENTRE FOUR STAR HOTEL The project at hand is to design a four star hotel as part of whole alumni Centre which will consists of dining facilities for buffet, ale carte, vegetarian, vegan, and light meals and drinks. Attached to the restaurant will be an Alumni Pub for afternoon, weekend drinks parties. To be included in the design are regular and deluxe guest rooms to accommodate out of town guests and alumni. Topnotch hospitality will be extended in the rooms, which should be about 50, a Presidential Suite is inevitable. Banqueting Area to be provided for banquets such as award banquets, annual meetings, weddings and networking events are well on their way to being a smash when you start the planning process by selecting the right place, such as a banquet room, to get together. 2 and are often overlooked, but make great places to get the team into a new environment and can make your company s team outing or corporate picnic comfortable, professional and productive. The proposed four star hotel will complement other structures in the alumni centre which include:association offices, Business centre, banking services and recreation centre. It should be able to blend in well with other surrounding structures. STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM/PROJECT JUSTIFICATION World over, universities establish Centres where their alumni conduct their business while at the same time playing the role of a focal point for link between them and their alma mater. It is for this reason that during the 41st Graduation Ceremony of the University of Nairobi in September 2009 that the Association Chairperson, Dr. Betty Gikonyo announced that the Alumni Association would put up an Alumni Centre. The Alumni of the University of Nairobi have no single place where they can meet, relax or even conduct their affairs. The over 130,000 alumni is a potential source of income to make the project a reality and a ready market for its activities. The centre is a good project that alumni can identify themselves with and act as a means of pooling their resources towards development activities at the university through partnerships. GOALS AND OBJECTIVES OF THE HOTEL Guest rooms will house visitors, including staff and students on exchange programmes between the University and other collaborating institutions in research, teaching and consultancy, and key and most crucial: External Examiners to the University. Generation of revenue through hire of conference, meeting and guest rooms. The revenue accrued will be used for sustenance of the Association. Other objectives include, To provide financial benefits To generate revenue to sustain the building and cater for future expansions. Social network support to the alumni. Financial support to the University. Self-sustenance of the Association. PRINCIPLES OF DESIGN Flexiblity Functionality Dynamism THE DESIGN The proposed four star hotel will be located on the lower end of the site as indicated on the site plan and it will be a six storey modern building with one basement to provide space for parking,generator room,switch room, transformer room and storage room. 3 The ground floor will be 1100mm high from ground level and thus the entrance will be served with both the stairs and ramp for disabled. A projection of first floor slab will serve as canopy at the entrance. Two round columns at the entrance will support the floor slab projection. Besides basic amenities to be provided, the four star is expected to have; Spacious ground floor lobbies Availability of room service Concierge Valet parking Bars and Restaurant in house Other services and amenities to be provided include Fitness centre Jacuzzis Sauna Massage service The site is situated along Arboretum drive next to the UNES headquarters Peponi road which is located near Statehouse. It is situated next to University of Nairobi Playing field a river which will provide a good view for guests as well as alumni. Several balconies will be provided on the side facing the field and generally uptown area. A general classification illustrates that the hotel will bed divided into two broad areas namely: Guests areas Services ares 1. GUEST AREAS Guests areas will contain all the facilities to be utilised by the guests, such guest areas are: The dining space Alunni bar and lounge Guest rooms Conferencing area/boardrooms Banqueting areas Parking spaces Reception area A Restuarant The restuarant will have the following facilities: Alacarte Vegeterian Vegan Page of 8

4 Light meals and drinks 2.SERVICES AREAS Service areas will occupied by the hotel staff, these areas include: Main kitchen Store and the cold rooms Refuse room Changing room for the staff Servery GENERAL HOTEL LAYOUT The hotel will have one main entrance for all the customers which will be provided with stairs and ramp for access with disabled persons. At entrance will have place for luggage scanning for security purposes and two doors for entry and exit towards the reception, from the reception will have hallways, lifts and stairs which will lead to Guest rooms, pubs, dining areas and the restuarants, generally from the reception one wll be able to access the guest areas. An atrium will be provided at the center of the building to provide natural lighting to ground floor and other upper floors. To ease access into building rooms, the stairs and lifts will be centrally located. The hotel will have moulded overhanging slab to provide for shading thus minimizing penetration of solar energy into the building thus ensuring thermal comfort. For security reasons the reception area will be strategically located to monitor movement of people. One fire escape stairs will be provided for easy evacuation in case of emergencies and to meet legislation needs. The staff will have their own entrance to access the hotel, they will get to kitchen, using the entrance and eventually to the service areas, the staff entrance is to be used by the staff only. The hotel will put key consinderations for the disabled and the handicapped, the design will provide for the facilities for such people. Two rooms on every floor from second floor will be provided and it will be near lifts for easy access to rooms.
