The House on Mango Street: Artists Interpret Community delves deeper into the acclaimed novel by Sandra Cisneros and how her story continues to affect communities across the country, especially here in Chicago more than 30 years later when she first penned the book. Llame al (773) I think, for me the most nerve wracking part will be watching Sandra Cisnero s reaction when she sees the exhibition for the first time on Thursday, said Chief Curator in charge of the exhibition Cesareo Moreno. We collected artwork from various artists who have been influenced by House on Mango Street and artists whose work touches on the many themes in the book. The House on Mango Street: Artists Interpret Community addresses themes including identity, community, family, and hope, universal themes Moreno believes everyone, not just the Latino community will relate to. Yes, we are a museum that houses the works of Mexican and Mexican- American artists, however this particular exhibit is designed to transcend cultural barrier and have people discover that we all have commonalities, said Moreno. The new exhibit houses 75 distinct works of art and site-specific installations that represents the artist s interpretation of one of the themes in the novel. The House on Mango Street: Artists Interpret Community is set to open to the general public on Friday, April 17 th. NMMA, located in Chicago at 1852 W. 19 th Street, will also host a special exhibition preview on Thursday, April 16 th. Exhibition Preview and Mango Street Suite Music inspired by The House on Mango Street Thursday, April 16, 6pm: The NMMA will present an exclusive performance of Reginald Robinson s original musical compositions together with Sandra Cisneros reading the selections from The House on Mango Street that inspired them. A preview of The House on Mango Street: Artists Interpret Community will begin at 6pm, and a book signing at 8 pm will follow the Mango Street Suite performance. Dinner will be provided and availability is limited. The cost to the public for this event is $50 per person. Opening Reception, Friday, April 17, 6pm: Author Sandra Cisneros will attend the opening reception of the new exhibition, The House on Mango Street: Artists Interpret Community. The activities that have been going on the last 16 years and recently the violent crimes and threats against people who voted against the current alderman are unacceptable. We are calling for an end to this and an investigation into any reports of rigging the results of the election La Comunidad de Southeast Pide una Investigación en las Elecciones del Distrito 10 Por: Ashmar Mandou El 11 de abril se llevó a cabo manifestación, encabezada por Anthony Martínez, del grupo comunitario RISE Southeast Chicago, para atender problemas de represalias, intimidación y corrupción, tras los resultados de las elecciones del distrito 10 en 106 y Ave. M. Los sucesos de los últimos 16 años y recientemente los crímenes violentos y amenazas contra la gente que votó contra el actual concejal, son inaceptables. Our community needs it, our neighbors want it, and our children demand it! We will not let people in our community be intimidated, threatened or hurt!

8 Page 8-LAWNDALE Bilingual News-Thursday, April 16, 2015 Man charged Sunday in Death of 18-month old Toddler On Thursday April 9, 2015 the Cicero Police and Fire Dept. responded to a call of an unresponsive child in a home in the 1600 block of 49 th Court. Edwin Eli O Reilly, 18 months old, was rushed to MacNeal Hospital where the child succumbed to injuries and was pronounced deceased. Cicero Police Detectives learned through a tireless investigative process that the child was in the care of 23 year old defendant, Martin Alvarado Jr. of the 1600 block of 49 th Ct. Alvarado Jr. was identified as the boyfriend of the victim s mother. During the time the child was in the care and custody of defendant Alvarado Jr., the child was crying and suffered from loose bowel movements, investigators learned. As the defendant was in the process of changing the young victim s diapers, the child urinated on Alvarado Jr. This enraged the defendant and Alvarado Jr., who struck the baby multiple times about the body causing the child s death. During interviews with Cicero Police through Sunday, Alvarado Jr. made incriminating statements and gave a video-taped confession of his actions that caused the death of the child. Police charged Martin Alvarado Jr., 23, was subsequently charged with First Degree Murder. On Monday, April 13 th a judge denied bond for Alvarado Jr., when he appeared at Bond Court in Maywood. A new hearing date has been set for Tuesday, April 28 th at Maywood Court House. Researchers Find Eating Out and Hypertension Are Linked Dining away from home isn t just bad for your waistline; it may also be hard on your heart and your health. Recent research shows that consuming restaurant meals is connected with an increased risk of high blood pressure that can lead to stroke, an aneurysm (swelling in the blood vessels or heart chamber) and a possible heart attack, Medical News Today reports. For the study, several researchers surveyed 501 young adult students, ages 18 to 40, at a university in Singapore. Edwin Eli O Reilly, de 18 meses de edad, fue llevado al Hospital MacNeal donde falleció a causa de las lesiones que presentaba y fue declarado muerto.
