1 Sunday Edition Noticiero Bilingüe Sunday, October 25, 2015 WEST SIDE TIMES news V. 75 No W. 25TH STREET CICERO, IL (708) FAX (708) ESTABLISHED 1940 CPS Students Kick-Off Cooking Up Change Competition By: Ashmar Mandou It is that time of the year again when culinary enthusiasts from Chicago Public Schools concoct deliciously healthy recipes for the masses to experience with delight at this year s Cooking Up Change competition on Thursday, Oct. 29th at Skyline Loft at the Bridgeport Art Center. This competition certainly is remarkable, said Culinary Teacher at Theodore Roosevelt High School Michael Marren. These students are so talented and so committed. To see these students in their element, really is to watch train professionals in five-star restaurants. Cooking Up Change is a competition developed by Healthy Schools Campaign and Chicago Public Schools to help foster a love of gastronomy and integrate healthy food options into Chicago public schools Berwyn Hosts Prevention through Education Series: How Do I know if My Child is Using Drugs? The City of Berwyn and the Berwyn Police Department are pleased to partner with J. Sterling Morton West High School to host a free community event entitled, How Do I know if My Child is using Drugs? This event will be hosted in the Morton West High School Auditorium, 2400 S. Home Avenue, on Wednesday, October 28 th, 2015 from 7:00pm to 9:00pm. With nationwide heroin related overdoses reaching epidemic proportions, Berwyn has chosen to be proactive in our approach to public health, said Mayor Robert J. Lovero. This community-wide meeting is an extension of our ongoing Prevention through Education public safety series. Guest speakers at the event will include: Tim Ryan, A Man in Recovery Foundation Detective Rich Wistocki, Cyber Safety Expert Sean Ferguson, Drug by creating a menu that meets USDA guidelines and the budgetary constraints, about $1 per meal that School Food Services programs across the country face. We are in our ninth year of the competition and it s always exciting to meet with students year after year to see what delicious recipes they have created to taste, said President and CEO of Healthy Schools Campaign and Cooking Up Change Rochelle Davis. This competition is an important tool to continue dialogue around healthy food options in our schools. The winners of the CPS competition will go on for an all-expense paid trip to the national competition in Washington, D.C., in June at the US Department of Recognition Expert Kyle The Kid, A Teen Recovering The presentations will help parents learn how to use Education. Last year s winning team from Chicago won third place at the national competition and the students had the opportunity to visit Representative Davis and Senator Durbin and also visited the White House kitchen. We had a lot of fun working together and coming up a recipe we hope the judges at the competition will enjoy, said Senior at Roosevelt High School Victoria Montanez, 19. I love to cook. I love to work with people, so this experience has been fun. Seniors Jessica Moreno, 17 and Sara Muñoz, 17 echoed the same sentiments. It s fun and challenging at the same time because we were given restrictions on what ingredients we can use, said Muñoz. So we really cutting-edge techniques to ensure that their children are safe. Additionally, youth will learn how to empower themselves to had to think outside the box. For Moreno, the best part of the experience is the competition itself. I participated in the competition last year and it was so much fun introducing our recipe to the judges and in front of others, said Moreno. The whole process helps to build confidence. The three ladies created a tropical recipe using tuna as the main ingredient. I like tuna and you can use it in different ways, said Montanez. We decided to do a tuna fritter using Cajun spices. It s delicious. The Cooking Up Change competition is a free event and open to the public. 4 Page 4-LAWNDALE Bilingual News -Sunday October 25, 2015 Annual Teddy Bear Toy Drive for Children is Ready to Roar Harley Style Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over this Halloween The Berwyn Police Department is Cracking Down on Drunk Drivers The Lake Shore Harley Owners Group (H.O.G.), Chapter #3522, will hold its annual Teddy Bear drive, bringing Christmas gifts to children in the care of the state of Illinois, on Sunday, November 8, We collect teddy bears and match box cars throughout the year to donate to the Department of Children and Family Services for the children in their care, said Joey Smith of the Lake Shore H.O.G. s. We have done this for more than 12 years and the smiles on the children s faces are sure to inspire us for decades to come. The event takes place at Lake Shore Harley- Davidson, Rockland Road in Libertyville and begins at 9:00 a.m. with the loading of the stuffed animals onto a truck. The H.O.G. ride begins at approximately 10:30 a.m. when the motorcycle riders will proceed to Illinois Department of Children and Family Services offices located in Waukegan, 500 N. Green Bay Road. I thank the Lake Shore H.O.G. members, Lake Shore Harley-Davidson, and the community for all their efforts in helping to make Christmas a special day for our children in care, said George H. Sheldon, Acting Director for the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services. This Halloween, The Berwyn Police Department is cracking down on impaired drivers with an aggressive Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over enforcement effort, and is giving a fair warning to all partygoers: keep the party off the road. Driving while alcohol or drug impaired is deadly, it is illegal, and it will get you pulled over and arrested this Halloween, said Chief James Ritz. If you want to stay safe and out of jail this Halloween, make a plan to get home without driving if you re impaired. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), nationally 43 percent of all people killed in motor vehicle crashes on Halloween night (6 p.m. Oct. 31 5:59 a.m. Nov. 1) from 2009 to 2013 were in crashes involving a drunk driver. On Halloween Night alone, 119 people lost their lives during that same period. Children out trick-or-treating and the parents or others accompanying them are also at risk, as 19 percent of fatal pedestrian crashes on Halloween night ( ) involved drunk drivers. Even if you drive impaired and aren t killed or seriously injured, you could end up paying as much $18,000 for a DUI.
House Speaker Michael J. Madigan issued the following statement after Fitch Ratings downgraded Illinois credit rating Monday: As I ve been telling Governor Rauner for several months, the number one problem facing Illinois is the state budget. The lack of a resolution on the state budget and Fitch Ratings downgrade are direct results of the governor s continued focus on issues other than solving our budget crisis. It s time we put aside the governor s list of issues that Democrats and Republicans believe will hurt middle-class families and instead focus on a budget that helps all Illinoisans. Fitch Ratings agrees with my view. Nowhere in Fitch s statement does it suggest that the state needs to follow the governor s agenda by weakening collective bargaining rights, reducing workers wages and hurting the middle class. I continue telling the governor we need to take a balanced approach to the state s financial challenges, one that includes some cuts, like those included in the budget passed by the Legislature in May, and new revenue. The credit rating downgrade is another reminder to the governor that it s time to focus on our budget. The Cook County Health & Hospitals System (CCHHS) hosted a ribbon cutting ceremony to celebrate the new dental clinic opening at the Dr. Jorge Prieto Health Center in Chicago s Lawndale neighborhood. The health system has seen tremendous changes as a result of the Affordable Care Act. It has been a Godsend for us and, more importantly, our patients, said Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle. Under the ACA, hundreds of thousands of people in Cook County were able to sign up for health coverage. Today, these individuals have access to important primary and preventive care services- like dental cleanings- that are key to keeping them healthy. The dental clinic at Prieto Health Center will provide a wide range of dental services, from cleanings and fillings, to root canals, dentures, crowns and even minor oral surgery. The clinic will be able to offer around 2,000 visits each year, significantly increasing the system s dental capacity. Last year, CCHHS provided for more than 4,300 dental visits across the system. Oct 31 5:59 a.m.
