2 Page 2-LAWNDALE Bilingual News-Thursday, May 1, 2014 By Daniel Nardini The Mexican holiday Cinco de Mayo (5th of May) is officially celebrated in 21 states across the United States as it is celebrated in Mexico. Known as the first Battle of Puebla, it was at this battle on May 5, 1862, that the Mexicans defeated a French expeditionary force sent against them by French Emperor Louis Napoleon III. But why did this Mexican holiday become popular in America? Cinco de Mayo actually became popular among the Mexican Americans and Mexican exiles in California in the 1860's as a rallying point against the French occupation of Mexico. At the same time, the Mexican victory over the French became a rallying cry among Mexican Americans fighting for the Union against the Confederacy during the U.S. Civil War ( ). Many Mexican Americans in California had volunteered to fight for the Union against the Confederacy because many felt that it was also a fight against the French. When the U.S. Civil War ended, the U.S. helped the Mexican Americans and Mexican exiles fight against the French and help Mexico regain its independence. Over the decades, the Evolution of Cinco de Mayo in the U.S. Cinco de Mayo holiday grew. As many Mexican immigrants moved to the United States, the Cinco de Mayo holiday became a focal point for Mexican heritage and Mexican pride. Those Mexican Americans who had been in California and in the southwest states of New Mexico, Arizona and Texas, had made Cinco de Mayo not only an important historic holiday but also a commercial and cultural rallying point. In the 1950's and 1960's, Cinco de Mayo had crossed over from being a celebration in just California and the U.S. southwest to being a celebration in Mexican American communities throughout the United States, and today is a major celebration in 21 states with well over 150 festivals across America.

3 Evolución del Cinco de Mayo en E.U. Por Daniel Nardini La fiesta mexicana del Cinco de Mayo se celebra oficialmente en 21 estados de Estados Unidos, como se celebra en México. Conocida como la primera Batalla de Puebla, fue en esta batalla del 5 de mayo de 1862, cuando los mexicanos derrotaron a la fuerza expedicionaria francesa, enviada contra ellos por el Emperador francés, Louis Napoleón III. Pero, porqué esta fiesta mexicana se volvió tan popular en Estados Unidos? El Cinco de Mayo realmente se volvió popular entre los méxicoamericanos y los mexicanos exiliados en California en la década de 1860 como punto de reunión contra la ocupación francesa en México. Al mismo tiempo, la victoria de México sobre los franceses se convirtió en grito de batalla entre los méxicoamericanos que luchanban por la Unión contra los Confederados, durante la Guerra Civil de E.U. ( ). Muchos méxicoamericanos en California se ofrecieron como voluntarios para pelear por la Unión contra los Confederados porque muchos sentían que era a su vez una lucha contra los franceses. Cuando terminó la Guerra civil de E.U., E.U. ayudó a los méxicoamericanos y a los mexicanos exiliados a pelear contra los franceses ayudándoles a recuperar su independencia. Al correr de los años, la fiesta del Cinco de Mayo se hizo más popular. Como muchos inmigrantes mexicanos llegaron a Estados Unidos, la fiesta del Cinco de Mayo se convirtió en punto de enfoque de la herencia y el orgullo mexicano. Los méxicoamericanos que habían estado en California y en los estados del sudoeste de Nuevo México, Arizona y Texas, hicieron del Cinco de Mayo no solo una importante fiesta histórica, sino un punto de reunión cultural y comercial. 7 French Immigration to Mexico By Daniel Nardini In the 1830's French immigrants began to immigrate to Mexico. Among the reasons why French immigrants chose Mexico was because of the climate, the prospect for gold and silver, and also business opportunities. Ironically, many French immigrated to Mexico when it was occupied by the French forces under French Emperor Louis Napoleon III. Despite the fact that the French expeditionary forces had left Mexico in 1867, and Mexico had regained its independence from France, most of the French immigrants had stayed. Even though France had militarily occupied Mexico for five years, most Mexicans bore no ill will to the French immigrants. From 1850 to 1914, over 11,000 French had immigrated to Mexico, making the French immigrants the second largest European group after the Spanish immigrants to Mexico. Most French immigrants had settled in the Veracruz area, although French immigrant communities and Mexicans of French descent can also be found in Aguascalientes, Guanajuato, Guadalajara, Mexico City, Queretaro, Puebla, San Luis Potosi, Zacatecas. Even now some Mexicans of French descent still speak French, and many hold dual Mexican-French nationality. Today, French expatriates make up the fourth largest expatriate group LAWNDALE Bilingual News -Thursday, May 1, 2014-Page 7 living in Mexico after the Americans, the Lebanese, and the Spanish. Some of the French immigrants had come from the French town of Barcelonnette, in Alpesde-Haute-Provence. These French helped establish textile manufacturing in Mexico, and are still influential in this sector of the economy. Among the French contributions to Mexico are French bread, famous French immigrants and descendants of French immigrants (such as Angelique Boyer who was born in France but later moved to Mexico, and famous photographer Lourdes Grobet, to name a very few), and French architecture.
