Glorious weaher for he Sauday aferooon lield visi around Coalbrookdale made up for he dismal resuls a he evening's aferdinner quiz! Ray Riley lnroducing he weekend, Mike Bone discussed he imporance of beer in an age when waer was impurg when brewing was an imporan source ol employmeng and indeed when he public house was a cenre of social life for many people. He offered an overview of he processes in maling and brewing hrough a helplul flow char and diagram. A paricularly ineresing poin was he imporance of domesic brewing; he pracice seems o have been common in Wes Yorkshire, where i is conceivable he aciviy was designed for consumpion wihin he home. ln common wih many oher indusries, brewing was placed on a subsanial, acory basis in he early nineeenh (enury and brewery size gradually increased hereafer. espe(ially wih he adven of he railway, allowing breweries o reach disan markes. Dr Lynn Pearson developed his heme, showing how breweries expanded verically, and where hey could hey purchased adjacen properies, A an early dae in he nineeenh cenury some breweries in large owns had become really subsanial; by 1815 Earclay Perkins in London was producing 300,000 barrels a year. Once he railway came on he scene he size of he local marke los is imporance, allowing Buron on Tren o prosper, led by Bass and Allsopp. ln 1870 Bass was producing one million barrels annually - he larges brewery in he world. As he size of breweries rose specialis archiecs emerged; one o hese was William Bradlord who designed 60 breweries, including hose a Hook Noron and Harvey's a Lewes. Somehing easily overlooked in he moorised age is he former imponance of accommodaion for horses. lndeed, disribuion probably employed more han brewing iself is oo ofen hough ha paricular places are uniqug when in ruh here are general prin(iples governing brewery aciviies irrespecive of locaion. Using Somerse as an example, Mary Miles raised he quesion as o why some breweries ougrew heir local marke and came o supply oher owns as well as heir own. The Anglo-Bavarian brewery a Shepon Malle came o possess 250 agens around he counry and delivered is beer inernaionally. he railway helped o keep disribuion coss a a manageable level, while waer qualiy was an issue, bu Mary argued ha he key was enrepreneurial skill. By using maps ol ied propenies i was clearly demonsraed ha brewers were no concerned wih couny boundaries, hence parly invalidaing sudi s a he couny scale. Concluding, Mary noed he role ol women as brewer knocking he sereoyped image. For mos people, vinegar is associaed wih ish and chip lile hough being given o is mehod of producion. lim Smih has made a special sudy of he indusry and offered a fascinaing insigh ino he aciviy. Vinegar was brewed by he Romans; differen grains may be used while here are hree possible processes: fielding, soving and quick, which was inrodu(ed in By 1833 here were several large vinegar breweries on he souh bank of he Thames using he fielding process which is space exensive, requiring barrels o be sored ofen in he open or nine monhs. Tle bes known is Sarson's brewery in Eermondsey, which Tim surveyed, giving us he benefi of his work. The Saurday afernoon field rip was led by Paul Belford, an archaeologis, who has been involved in excavaing waer(ourses in he viciniy of Coalbrookdale, Six ponds and heir dams, some vesigial, were visied, many adiacen o roads mos ol he gahering had driven along bu never noiced, The las sie, Upper Forge, was addiionally he sie of wha was believed o be he oldes excavaed maling in he UK, daing from 1612; nohing was o be seen, bu i was relevan o he conferen(e heme, and he weaher was marvellous, The afer-dinner quiz ook he form of an unseen examinaion, all he quesions being abou phoocopied phoographs. ludging by he ousanding low scores he quizmaser had obviously overesimaed brewery knowledge; he runs he risk ofbeing replaced.the winner was Mary Miles. rrli' l_--.'..,] '. 2 NDUSTRAL ARCHAE1L)GY NEws 3B

4 Repor on he AA visi o Alsace fhe AA spring visi o Alsace ook place on April, and was based nainly in Srasboug fron which a number of differen ours were made. Ou sincerc hanks go o Paul Sauher and Sue Hayon lor devising hk vey ineresing visi and naking all he arrangenens, which worked exrenely smoohly. Addiional hanks go o for he infornaive guides she wroe fo us, and 'ue fron which freely adni have cribbed mos ol he infornaion below. Our hanks go also o he ohe Paul, our driver, who lor a second year drove us safely and wih aplomb, despie he renoeness of some sies down narrow lanes or even racks. David Alderon This year's visi required an even earlier sar han la5! bu nevenheless he (oach go off from Vicoria only a few minues lae, and a lenghy journey brough us o our hoel in luxembourg by early evening. A line warm evening lured some of he pary o ea in he old own, perched above he juncion beyveen wo ravines and linked o he new own by some fine bridges and viaducs. The following morning we had an hour or so o invesigae he la of Luxembourg ciy, using a very uselul bookle wrien by sue Hayon. Mos people managed o see a leas he raher impressive saion and is wo roundhouses, one convered, one under conversion, before we joined he coach or he run o Srasbourg. he hoel in Srasbourg was in a crescen opposie he saion, he whole area laid ou on he grand scale, wih he square currenly being refurbished.he saion proved well worh a visi, a large and elaborae building wih some inriguing inerior sculpures and a fine rain shed. Like all he saions we saw in Alsace, i was designed by German ar(hiecs in he period of German rule belveen 1871 and 1919, and was deliberaely impressive. We had he afernoon o explore he ciy using Sue's our noes. Boh on his day and he wo following evenings he excellen ram service provided a resfulway back o he hoel, once one had masered he inricacies o, buying a icke. Srasbourg was much more medieval han mos ol us had expeced, and he archaeology was mercanile raher han indusrial, bu sill lascinaing, We also discovered a wide variey of local lood specialiies, served in enormous porions. 0n he Wednesday he visi sared in earnes.he firs sop was in Colmar, again by he saion, which reained races ol Germanic scrip. Probably he mos impressive building here was he enormous and elaborae own waer-ower, 53 meres high. ilany of he public buildings again showed Germanic influence. ln Mulhouse, where we spen he res o he day, we (ould lirs choose beween he railway and he auomobile museums.he formerwas in wo pars, one a very convenional bu good collecion of locomoives and railway vehicles, he oher more reminiscen of'seam' a Swindon, wih a planned roue and video presenaions using archive film o illusrae various aspecs o he railway hisory of Alsace including quie a lo on he railways in warime. We hen visied he workers' housing in he Cie de Mulhouse, ereded behveen 1854 and 1900 as somehing o a model developmen. Schools, a church and a marke were provided, bu as he housing was buil o encourage owner occupaion, laer individual house improvemens have raher bluned any earlier uniformiy. 'Cluser'housing, of four houses occupying he corners of a square block (as a DarleyAbbey) are ':* numerou and here are also rows of high qualiy back-o-backs as well as erraces and semideached dwellings. All houses have reasonable gardens and he whole is generously laid ou. Our final visi also involved a choice beween he Musee D'impression recording he calico prining indusry lounded here in 1746, and he Musee du Papier Pein which deals wih he wallpaper prining indusry esablished inl792 using similar echnology. ln 1833 he local calico priners formed a sociey o creae an archive, collecing samples from all over he world. The aim was o inspire heir designer, and in 1888 hey buil his impressive museum o hold he collecion, o which have been added examples of prining machinery The wallpaper museum was founded by he bigges manufacurer, lean Zuber. afirm which is sillin business, again, icombined preserved machinery wih a fine collecion of wallpaper samples. lhursday saw us heading for he hilll and lor La Mine Gabe Goes (Gif of God). An enhusiasic young lady led us on an underground our ofhis preserved silver minq which managed o reain he feel of underground exploraion (hard has, miners'lamps, wellies, walking along a flowing adi) wih a clear presenaion of he e(hniques used in irs 400-year hisory. The mine isel had been opened in he sixeenh cenury and worked more or less coninuously from he eigheenh (enury o unch was aken a he Ecomusee d'alsacq a collecion of some 70 buildings from he area, arranged as a raher more convin(ing village han mos Briish examples. Sadly here was oo lile ime o see he sie horoughly, bu a large sawmill using waler power o drive a verical saw go my aenion. T ' : ) : : r=--!. T {i.- -. a u.. s,"*r. The more dedicaed of he pary saw everyhing bu go soaked o he skin, while he less dedicaed noed he looming black cloud and qo back o he coach before he rain saned! A leas he coach was parked opposie he main premises of he leading enrepreneur he Coulaux brohers. An ineresing day ended wih a wineasing. A low arch, which looked as i i migh conver our coach o a charabanc, sopped us reaching our inended grower, bu luckily we found Rober Blanck in obernai who. despie he lack of noice, made us very welcome.afer a visi o his cellars (no very exciing hough wih some impressively large holding barrels), he Alsaian wine we ased proved quie good enough for mos ol us o succumb o a leas a bole or!vo, despie he problems of geing i home from vlcoria by public ranspon, our inal complee day sared wih a visi o Schoenenbourg For, he mos easerly for of he inerwar Magino [ine. Oil was seriously exraced afer 1768 using sand lirs lrom underground qalleries, bu laer pumped ou. ln his area was pioneered exploraory drilling for oil ('1813), and i had he world's firs school of oil echnology. Your corresponden was overwhelmed by end-of-year adminisraive aciviy brough abou by his new and varied duies, and by his failure o muli-ask effecively, so he grealy appreciaes he olerance and undersanding shown by he edior. his ha as always, been a very mixed year in Scoland. Commencing on a sad noq friends and colleagues norh of he border were very sad o hear of he deah ol Eric Wa, a prime mover in he Scoish lndusrial Heriage Sociey, and well known o many AA members. Elemens of his excepionally valuable archive have been gifed o a variey of relevan insiuions, and he mos imporan indusrial phoographs are o be copied lor deposi in he Naional Monumens Record o Scoland. Perhaps he mos disurbing news of he year has been he collapse and closure of he Dalmellingon and Disric Conservaion Trus, which had run he lormerwaersid lron Work5 sie near Dalmellingon as indusrial museum for many years. The liquidaion followed he wihdrawal wihou warning o, local auhoriy funding (by Eas Ayrshire Council), and has had many disressing consequences. 0f hese, perhaps he mos exraordinary was he aucion of asses by he liquidaor during which, riends and voluneers of he museum bough back iems ha hey had originally gifed o lhe Trus. here are also wonies abou he long-erm fuure ofhe surviving srucures wihin he sie, and Hisoric Scoland are acively working o ensure ha he blas- urnace bank and associaed blasengine house do no suffer in he ensuing period of uncerainy. urher nonh in lrvine, he fuure of he Scoish Mariime l\4useum also seems o be uncerain, and i now seems likely ha he 5/ Carrick (or Ciy of Adelaidel is unlikely o be resored afer he esimaed fl0 million cos was deemed o be prohibjive. his will be a major disappoinmen o many, no leas he people o Souh Ausralia whose forebears arrived in he ship over many decades. l is now likely ha he vessel will be dismanled in a process ha will include carelul recording. The previous applicaions have cied he need o make space or he pre-abricaion of large pieces of warship, bu somehow demoliion never occurred and he crane was sill used from ime o ime. Now i seems ha he crane is o be condemned o deah once again. This would be a shame given he desrucion ol similar cranes on he Tyne and a Rosyh, and he fac ha oher counries such as Japan (Nagasaki) and Ausralia (Sydney) appear o reasure heir own Arrol cranes wih more enhusiasm. one ol he grea cenres o indusrial archives is siuaed no far rom Govan a Glasgow Universiy Archive Services, which also accommodaes he Business Archives Council of Scoland (BACS).
