The bulletin contains a summary of the latest regulatory developments, exhibitions, seminars and general Institute news. Further information on each item will be available via links to the RIAI website. Practices who wish to contribute to the bulletin should send their news to jmiller@riai.ie Open Door : RIAI Members asked to help the Homeless Saturday 16th April 2005 A letter to all Members from RIAI President, Tony Reddy, has been posted and will be with you in the next few days. It details the aims of the RIAI Open Door fundraising scheme with the Simon Community. We need assistance from as many Members as possible. To view the letter and to download the registration form, please go to: http// EDUCATION Project Management in the Built Environment, 2005 A three-day course designed by Integrated Project Management for RIAI Members, Associates, Architectural Technicians and the employees of Registered RIAI Practices.

2 RIAI CPD Credit Hours: 20 Dublin: Feb 24th, March 3rd &10th Cork: June 10th, 17th & 24th Dublin: September 15th, 22nd, 29th The course runs for three full days hrs at each venue Please click here for further information and Booking Form (PDF, 130kb) Conservation Induction Module 2005 last chance until 2007 The RIAI Conservation Module, first run in the Spring of 2003, is being repeated this year for the third time. Successful completion of the Conservation Induction Module is the basic requirement for Accreditation at Grade III in the RIAI Conservation Accreditation System. Accreditation is open to any RIAI Registered Member or RIAI Registered Practice, but please note that for Practice Accreditation at least one of the Principals must attend and successfully complete the Module. After this year, the Module will be run at two year intervals so that the next Conservation Induction Module will not take place until The Module will be structured in three phases: Phase 1: The Document Pack A Conservation Documents Pack will be distributed in early March. Participants will be expected to read and familiarise themselves with the contents of the documents in the pack before Phase 2 begins. Phase 2: Lecture Sessions This Phase will consist of five full days. Sessions 2 and 3 and sessions 4 and 5 are running on two sets of consecutive days to facilitate people based at a distance from Dublin to reduce time spent travelling. 3 Tuesday 5th April Monday 25th April (Site Visit) Tuesday 26th April Phase 3: Assessment Assessment will consist of one exercise involving both factual and scenario-based questions. The exercise, which will be open-book format, will be issued to participants for completion within a given time frame but at a location (home, office...) of their own choosing. The Assessment Exercise will be issued on May 18th. The deadline for the submission of completed Exercises will be June 1st. 4 Domestic Projects RIAI to Update List for 2005 The RIAI receives many queries from the general public looking for practices to undertake Single Houses, House Extensions & Renovations in the domestic market. We know many RIAI registered practices specialise in these types of projects, but are you on the RIAI list? Please let us know if you would like to be added to this list, and what area of work you are particularly interested in and in which region you practice. RIAI Representation on External Bodies The RIAI is represented on various external bodies related to the construction industry. An example is the Liaison Committee of the Building Industry, which is attended by Joe Miller, Eugene Dunne, Eoin O Morain and Jude O Loughlin. To view the other 34 committees click here: NEWS New RIAI Magazine "House - Architecture l Design l Garden l Advice" is a new magazine aimed at the general public featuring the best of Irish architect-designed houses, extensions and renovations. Published by Architecture Ireland publishers Nova Publishing and edited by Sandra O'Connell, "House - Architecture l Design l Garden l Advice" would like to invite all RIAI registered practices carrying out residential work to submit their details for a free listing in this magazine. 6 Submissions due to the RIAI on Friday 25 February 2005 at 12 noon Please note: projects should only be submitted which were certified practically complete during the calendar year 2004 COMPETITIONS RIAI COMPETITIONS CORK EUROPEAN CITY OF CULTURE 2005 The RIAI is currently administering 2 competitions, details of which can be found on the Competitions Area of the RIAI Website or by clicking on these links: KYRL S QUAY Architectural Design Competition Ideas Competition to Design an Ideal 21st Library for Cork Torsanlorenzo Nurseries International Prize 2005 Landscape, planning and protection OBJECTIVE: Created by the Italian company «Vivai Torsanlorenzo» (Torsanlorenzo Nurseries), the aim of this international prize is to promote completed landscape projects and the quality of urban and forest vegetation. This Prize is approved by the International Union of Architects UIA. THREE TYPES OF PROJECT Projects submitted for this Prize must correspond to one of the following three categories: Landscape design in territorial transformation: Interventions in the field of rehabilitation, restoration, highlighting the natural environment. Vegetation in an urban environment: Design of green spaces in cities: square, neighbourhood, and urban park. Private gardens and parks in cities and their environs.

7 PARTICIPATION This Prize is open to architects and professionals of landscape planning registered with the professional body in their country. Projects that have already obtained a prize or recognition are not eligible for the «Torsanlorenzo Nurseries Prize» Participation is free of charge. Registration will be made at the time of submission of entries, which must be sent to the organisers by 15 March 2005 at the latest, to be received no later than 25 March DOCUMENTATION TO BE SUBMITTED Competitors must submit their projects on two panels, A1 format (59,4 cm X 84,1 cm) presenting the graphic documents necessary for the comprehension of the project, and accompanied by a descriptive and technical report, in Italian, of 5 pages maximum, format A4 (21 cm X 29,7 cm). A French or English translation of the report will be included. The documentation will also be submitted in electronic form on a CD (format JPEG or TIFF for the high definition images of 300 dpi minimum; format WORD for the texts). JURY The international jury will be composed of professionals representing the following professional bodies: The International Union of Architects The European Foundation of Landscape Architects The National Council of Italian Architects, Planners, Conservators, Landscape architects The Council of the National Order of Italian Agronomists The International Federation of Landscape Architects The European Federation of Landscape Architects The Italian Association of Landscape Architecture a representative of the editorial team of the Italian journal Torsanlorenzo Informa Mario Margueriti, representing the Torsanlorenzo Nurseries. The jury will meet on 1st April 2005 and the official announcement of the results will take place on 7th April PRIZES Two prizes will be awarded in each of the three categories: a first prize of 2500 euro; a second of 1000 euro.

8 Information and submission of projects: EVENTS Irish Architectural Awards CAVAN The exhibition of the winners of the Irish Architecture Awards 2004 will be opened in the Court House, Farnham Street, Cavan on Tuesday 15 February at 6pm by the President of the RIAI Anthony Reddy. The exhibition will run in Cavan until 2nd March before moving to the Spring House & Garden Show at the RDS on 17th-20th March. Members Meeting - Cavan A members meeting will take place in the Farnham Arms Hotel, Main St, Cavan on Tuesday 15 February at 4.30pm. RSVP: Jill Jacob at the RIAI, Tel: or E- mail: jjacob@riai.ie Members Meeting - Wexford This took place on the 8th February and was attended by local members, including Mary Duggan, Regional Representative on RIAI Council, and the former representative, Ann Harpur. The meeting was held in the Westgate Tavern followed by the Exhibition of the Irish Architectural Awards, which was opened by Councillor, Pat Codd. Michael Cullinan, RIAI First President, representing the RIAI, made a speech on behalf of the President, Mr Tony Reddy. Also in attendance was Wexford County Manager, Mr Eddie Breen, the newly appointed County Architect, Mr Sean McLoughlin, and the Director of Planning, Mr Tony Larkin. 9 MISCELLANEOUS New Development Opportunities in Belfast Belfast s Laganside Corporation have the Queen s Quay development brief focusing on the East bank of the River Lagan. Interested parties are invited to submit proposals for the acquisition and development of the site before noon on Monday 9th May, The development mix should include residential, tourist attractions, recreation, hotel, business uses, local shops, car parking and restaurants. This flagship development in the city should create a vibrant waterfront by day and night. The 3.5 acre site is located on the East bank of the River Lagan and extends from the Queen s Bridge End to the M3 road and rail bridge. Currently perceived as unattractive, the area lies within a major traffic corridor serving East Belfast from the emerging waterfront at the Odyssey and the City centre.
