3 General Information about the City of Sherbrooke s Architectural Awards Jean-Pierre Kesteman, Chair The event is organized by the City of Sherbrooke s urban planning and development unit and (SPDU) and communications unit in cooperation with their partners: the Conférence régionale des élus de l Estrie, La Nouvelle, La Tribune and Radio-Canada. Goals General objective Highlight, every two years, the quality of new and restored architecture in Sherbrooke in terms of the work, the building and its layout. Specific objectives Highlight the efforts and achievements of owners, designers and builders. Create a sense of pride among Sherbrooke residents. Stimulate the interest of designers, builders and owners so that they erect new and outstanding buildings that promote quality architecture that is specific to Sherbrooke. Promote Sherbrooke as a city that takes care of and preciously maintains its heritage. Award Categories New and and outstanding architecture 1. Residential 2. Institutions, businesses and industry 3. 4 Frequency Awards in each category will be given out every two years. An awards ceremony will take place at the Salon Expo habitat de l Estrie each year ending in an odd number (Friday, February 6, 20, at noon, in 2011, in 2013, etc.). Eligible Projects All construction or renovation projects undertaken in Sherbrooke by owners or managers of residential, commercial, industrial or institutional buildings are eligible. Projects from the City and its para-municipal organizations are excluded. For the first awards ceremony, eligible projects must have been started after the municipal merger of January 1, 2002, and completed before December 31, Exterior work must have been carried out with a permit or certificate of authorization, if required, and must respect municipal by-laws. NOTE THE URBAN PLANNING AND DEVELOPMENT UNIT (SPDU) WILL CHECK THE ELIGIBILITY OF EACH NOMINATION AND FORWARD IT TO THE JURY MEMBERS. Nominations Any nomination that does not meet eligibility requirements will not be accepted. The straightforward and easy-to-complete nomination form must include the following supporting documents and be presented as follows: Nomination form must be completed and signed by the owner or representative of the property. Photographs in digital format (JPEG or TIFF) on CD and in printed format (8" x 10"). A maximum of six colour photos will be allowed, each showing a different angle of the project before and after to give an overview of the work. Description (maximum one typed page) describing the project. 5 Finalists The jury will select a maximum of three finalists for each of the first six categories and a winner for each category. For the Louis-N.-Audet Jury Award, any outstanding achievement may be chosen by the jury, whether or not it qualifies in one of the above categories. Type of Awards 7 commemorative plaques produced by the artist Tétro and 7 certificates of recognition A commemorative plaque (to be affixed to the building), designed and created by artist Jean-Marc Tétro, will be awarded to the owner or representative of the winning project in each category. It must be affixed to the exterior façade of the building, according to the artist's instructions. This commemorative plaque will highlight the contribution of each project to enhancing Sherbroooke s architecture and shall remain on the building in perpetuity. The owner or representative of the award-winning project in each category will receive a certificate of authenticity signed by the artist. Certificates of merit will be given to the designers and builders of the award-winning buildings. There is a large-scale visibility plan for print and electronic media in terms of coverage of the winners and finalists. Jury: Selection Committee The jury is made up of seven people (men and women): A representative from each official partner (3), who is not in a conflict of interest Two architects from outside of Sherbrooke who are recognized by their peers and who are not in a conflict of interest A professional artist who is part of the City of Sherbrooke s cultural directory An individual who is skilled in the area of heritage, history or art history The main responsibility of jury members is to select the finalists and the winner in each category from among the eligible projects using a selection grid prepared by the SPDU. 6 Awarding of Prizes and Coverage An awards ceremony will take place on Friday, February 6, 20, at noon, at the Salon Expo habitat de l Estrie. Photos of the winning and finalist buildings will be featured on the City of Sherbrooke s portal and in print media (La Nouvelle and La Tribune). A tour of the winners will eventually be available in both paper and CD format so that the public may view the award-winning buildings (exterior only). The goal of the winners tour is to develop a sense of pride in the City s architectural beauty and to promote the event s continuity.
