1 The Practice e - Bulletin (Issue No. 34) Dear Member Welcome to Issue No 34 of the Practice e-bulletin. This is in a new format which we trust you will find easier to use. The reason for the change in format is to reduce the size of the document on your computer screen. Each topic is headlined and if you are interested in a particular topic, simple click the link to go to the full text. The RIAI website will open in your Internet browser. You will need to login with your Membership No. and Password to view the full text of the article. Once logged in you can either return to this for links or simply use the news section of the Members Only area where all articles are available. ARCHITECTURE Vote for the RIAI Gold Medal Special Award The RIAI Gold Medal is awarded three to five years after completion so buildings can be judged in a mature state. A short-list of ten has been selected by the Jury. The winner and highly commended and commended awards will be announced and presented by the President of Ireland, Mary McAleese, on November 10th A special award will be made to the building receiving the most votes in the web poll. PRACTICE RIAI Independent Survey of Fees and Charges RIAI President Tony Reddy has recently written to all RIAI Practices urging their cooperation with the second independent Fee Survey Questionnaire and highlighting the

2 importance of filling and returning the questionnaire to the independent surveyors. The questionnaire should be with RIAI Practices by the middle of this week. The date for the return of the questionnaire is Friday 11th November Draft CIF Liaison Practice Notes for the RIAI Form of Building Contract The CIF Liaison Practice committee is comprised of representatives of the RIAI, The SCS, ACEI/ IEI and the CIF. MEMBERS Dublin Region Members' meeting The date for the Dublin Region Members' meeting is Wednesday 16th November 2005 at 6.30 pm at 8 Merrion Square, Dublin 2. The meeting will be chaired by RIAI President, Tony Reddy and a small reception will be held afterwards. Invitations will soon be issued to all Members in Dublin, Wicklow, Meath and Kildare, and once you have received this, we ask you to confirm that you attend. Derry Members' Meeting Niall Meagher, RIAI Honorary Treasurer, made a presentation to Joanne, Thomas and Adam Callaghan at the Guildhall in Derry on 5th September 2005 for the House at Roslea, County Fermanagh This won the best Private Project at the Irish Architecture Awards 2005 and was designed by RIAI Practice Aughey O'Flaherty Architects. more... 4 Irish Architecture Awards - Belfast The Irish Architecture Awards Exhibition will soon open in Belfast at the Frances McMorris Room, Royal Society of Ulster Architects, 2 Mount Charles, Belfast BT71NZ by Mr Anthony Reddy, RIAI President together with Mr Mervyn Black, RSUA president, on Thursday, 27 October 2005 at 6pm. The Members' meeting will commence at 5pm. D. NEWS New RIAI Exhibition: "Building Better Communities" As part of the Loving Architecture festival, this exhibition has been aimed at the public, opinion formers and policy maker to show what can be done when good urban design techniques are employed. Using schemes from RIAI practices, it highlights the need for this level of forward planning and design at all levels on a national scale. The exhibition will run from Tuesday 1st November until Friday 11th November at The Architecture Centre, RIAI, 8 Merrion Square, Dublin 2. Opening hours are 9am-5pm. 7 Result of UIA Competition: Performing Arts Centre Seoul The Committee for a Performing Arts Centre launched, in May 2005, an international ideas competition in a single stage for the architectural design of a vast cultural complex. The competition was open to architects and students of architecture worldwide.
