1 WA Australian Institute of Architects Awards Installation Competition Brief Showcase your creativity and amaze your colleagues by designing and building an installation for the foyer of the Perth Concert Hall at the annual 2013 WA Architecture Awards. Transform the foyer of this elegant public building and create a sense of wonderment and delight.

2 Who can enter? Anyone can enter, and you may enter as an individual or a team. All submissions will be considered. The Client The Australian Institute of Architects The Project Design and build an installation for the foyer of the Perth Concert Hall. The installation is to fill the volume surrounding the central staircase - up to three levels high It is recommended that the installation be constructed to be free-standing, so it does not rely on external support from the Perth Concert Hall Guests will not have access to the main foyer space until after the ceremony, when they will enter the foyer directly from inside the auditorium. Therefore your installation has great potential to surprise and delight. This also offers opportunity to create intrigue and suspense by what can be glimpsed from outside the building before the event.

3 The Site The Foyer of the Perth Concert Hall, 5 St Georges Terrace, Perth WA. The Perth Concert Hall is one of the state s grandest examples of modernist architecture, designed by Howlett and Bailey Architects and opened in The tall atrium space surrounding the central stairs offers great potential for an installation, with off form concrete, level changes, an assortment of viewpoints and a soaring void to work with.

4 What Materials can you use? The choice of materials is open. Your budget is tight so innovation with inexpensive materials will be required. Remember that many people will be milling around in admiration, perhaps touching the installation, most likely with drinks or food in hand, so it should have a degree of robustness and durability. Dimensions The installation can be any size or shape but we encourage taking advantage of the tall volume available, and to consider the various vantage points available to people walking up and down the stairs and from the various floors. Construction and Disassembly You will have one day to construct the installation. You will have access to the venue from midday on the day of the Awards, Friday 5th July, and then again the following morning to dismantle it. A Perth Concert Hall technician can be made available to assist if there are power or lighting elements to your installation, however the hourly cost of this technician ($50/hr both to assemble and disassemble) must then be incorporated into your budget. It may be possible to hang elements of the installation from the ceiling of the Perth Concert Hall, but again this will require the paid assistance from a technician to assemble and disassemble, and therefore is to be cautiously considered. Safety and Compliance The installation must be sturdy and safe, presenting no risk of collapse or injury. Materials selected must be safe and non-toxic. The Budget You have a total budget of $500. This must cover the cost of materials and if required the cost of using a Perth Concert Hall technician. A proposed budget should be included with your submitted design.

6 Judging The Jury will consist of members from the Australian Institute of Architects WA Chapter Awards Taskforce, Patrick Beale, Architecture Discipline Chair, UWA, Trent Woods, Director of Officer Woods, Fred Chaney, Director of Cox Howlett Bailey Woodland, and Kirsten Bruce, Office of the Government Architect.
