The Charleston Heritage Symposium is presented under the auspices of the Preservation Society of Charleston, founded in 1920 as the first community-based preservation organization in the United States. Limited to 80 patrons, the Symposium offers a delightful fall weekend in this historic South Carolina seaport renowned for its landmark buildings, magnificent homes and gracious hospitality. Join us as we examine some of the diverse cultures that made Charleston such a cosmopolitan city in the 18th and early 19th centuries: British, French Huguenot, Jewish, African, German and Italian. This year, we are delighted to present two Keynote Speakers. On Friday evening, we will welcome Dr. Tessa Murdoch, FSA, Deputy Keeper, Department of Sculpture, Metalwork, Ceramics, and Glass at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. We are honored to have Mr. William G. Allman, Curator of the White House, open our Saturday program. In addition to an outstanding roster of presenters and lectures, we will examine the architecture, furnishings, and garden of a superlative private late 18th-century home, and enjoy an exclusive visit to a private collection of three centuries of Charleston furniture and silver. As the Charleston Heritage Symposium tends to sell out quickly, you are encouraged to sign up early. The 2015 Symposium is paired with the Preservation Society of Charleston s popular Fall Tours of Homes, providing further opportunities to experience our city s rich layers of history.

With its stunning Adamesque style plaster friezes, cornices, and mantles, and its curved eliptical staircase, this residence is one of the largest single houses ever built in Charleston. It boasts one of the city s most complete range of outbuildings, showcases a beautiful garden, and is currently a private single family residence. SUNDAY, OCTOBER 11, :30-10:15 a.m. Tour led by Daniel K. Ackerman: K.K. Beth Elohim Synagogue, 90 Hasell Street. Founded in 1740, Kahal Kadosh Beth Elohim is the oldest synagogue in continuous use in the United States. The present building, designed in 1840 by Cyrus L. Warner, is often described as one of the country s finest examples of Greek Revival architecture. 10:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Behind-the-Scenes Tour of The Rivers Collection Charleston native and businessman John M. Rivers, Jr. alarmed that much of Charleston s furniture and decorative arts had left the city set out to reclaim the city s decorative heritage and has made a concerted effort to acquire and return three centuries of locally made furniture, silver, and other objects that tell the multi-cultural story of Charleston and its inhabitants. This private collection is being opened exclusively for Symposium patrons by Mr. Rivers who will host the morning visit. This special visit includes Bloody Marys and a light brunch.
