3 2012 ConferenCe sessions Brief descriptions session 1: keynote verne harris Verne Harris, Director of the Memory Program at the Nelson Mandela Institute, will deliver the keynote address, Archive of Memory, Memory in Archive. session 2A: Memory and suppressed Archives Speakers will examine the challenges to and persistence of memory through archival records and architecture in repressive regimes including Rwanda, the former Yugoslavia, and Guatemala. session 2B: Memory obscured Presenters will consider how pivotal events in Alberta s history, specifically the eugenics movement and labour disputes, have been forgotten or left inaccessible by traditional archival activities, with illustrations of the methods that have been used to recover and preserve memory of these events. session 3A: Archives and social Justice roundtable This roundtable will discuss the recovery, recollection, and/or reappraisal of records within existing archival holdings that, although previously neglected, are now viewed in a new context pertaining to social justice issues. session 3B: Archives in Alberta This session will highlight the work of Alberta s archival community, including the appraisal of a large, complex photographic studio; the challenge of developing an online exhibit in a large municipal bureaucracy; and navigating Alberta s Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act to fill gaps in the historical record. session 4A: Memory of Archive Speakers will address the memory created by archival institutions themselves, including memory transfer from retiring archivists to their successors; the use of archives in a deliberate search for institutional memory; and the need to nurture community memory of a damaged archives throughout its reconstruction. session 4B: intentional recollections Using women s memoirs and holocaust survivor testimony as examples, speakers will examine how memory is fixed in time and place, the selective nature of what is remembered and forgotten, and how these sources are used and valued by succeeding generations. session 5: Calgary 1912 A panel will examine topics pertinent to Calgary in 1912, including community arts and culture, wellknown chatelaine Belle Lougheed, and the Calgary Stampede, in order to determine how the memory of these people and events has resonated (or not) in the community one hundred years later. session 6A: Personal Memory Presenters will examine personal memories created by culinary traditions, parental relationships, and family traditions within cultural communities. session 6B: Community Memory This session will discuss how archival institutions preserve and pass along community memory in three different settings: Canada s gay and lesbian community, resettled coastal communities in Newfoundland, and Indigenous and marginal communities. session 7: i remember, therefore i Am terry Cook Noted archival theorist Terry Cook will conclude the conference with his closing plenary, I Remember, Therefore I Am.
