DRAWN MONAGHAN 2014 Architecture talks & events
DRAWN Buildings are thought, drawn and made. Some evolve gradually over time and others arrive with great flourish and prominence. Monaghan boasts a variety of quality buildings, ranging from quiet understated farmhouses, byres and barns to large country houses with fine architectural detailing. Churches too form an important part of this heritage, and are strongly associated with a community sense of identity and are often the only built feature glimpsed between the Monaghan hills. Think too of the railway bridges and stations, once bustling with activity and steam, which are dotted around the landscape complementing the remnants of the linen industry s mills. This series of architectural talks and events for 2014 celebrates Monaghan s architectural and built heritage. Events are free unless otherwise stated. Monaghan County Council has a strong commitment to the conservation and promotion of Monaghan s heritage. This series of architectural talks and events forms part of our commitment to informing the public about the place in which we live and how historic buildings contribute to our sense of place and the quality of our environment. These events are part of the implementation of the County Monaghan Heritage Plan, and are jointly funded by Monaghan County Council and the Heritage Council. In 2013, the National Inventory of Architectural Heritage published the Introduction to the Architectural Heritage of County Monaghan and an inventory of over 1,350 structures. This can be accessed on The County Monaghan Heritage Plan and other heritage information is available on www. monaghan.ie To contact the event organiser: Shirley Clerkin Heritage Officer Monaghan County Council heritage@monaghancoco.ie /
EVENT VENUES THE MARKET HOUSE pediments, rosettes and family heraldry, drawn from the ancients, is worthy of note. The variety of treatments of the limestone, and the profusion of ornament, are apparent and help create a work of art as well as of architecture at the heart of the historic town. The Market House is now a gallery and arts venue, and is a hive of activity befitting its original purpose. It is a protected structure of national importance. The Market House Monaghan Market House, owned by Monaghan County Council, is one of the finest of its type in Ireland, standing proudly in a central location in the town. Recently conserved, it continues to serve the town more than two centuries after its construction in It was a key building in the town s commercial infrastructure until the mid-twentieth century and would have been the focus of much activity on market days, with important social as well as commercial significance. The design and execution of this building are of very high quality. Inspired by the widely popular use of classical architecture in prestigious buildings, the design and its use of architectural components such as niches, MONAGHAN COUNTY MUSEUM, 1-2 HILL STREET, MONAGHAN Monaghan County Museum, owned by Monaghan County Council, was formerly a pair of substantial townhouses at a prominent location in the town built in the 1830s. The square heads of the windows and round heads of the doorways provide visual interest to the facade, and the quality of limestone stonework, though not ashlar, is the work of skilled craftsmen. The cast iron railings to the front provide good decorative interest at street level and the retention of timber joinery enhances this fine building. It is a protected structure of regional importance. 1
SIGNIFICANT BUILDINGS OF COUNTY MONAGHAN 8pm, Thursday 13 March The Market House, Monaghan The structures which contribute most to our sense of place are frequently everyday buildings, those that enhance the quality of their environments with quiet ease. In this illustrated talk, Kevin will share with us his in-depth knowledge of some of Monaghan s best buildings and architecture. Kevin V.Mulligan was born in Kells, Co.Meath and is a graduate of the National University of Ireland and Trinity College Dublin. He is an independent architectural historian and author. His recent book on the Buildings of South Ulster, Armagh, Cavan and Monaghan is an indispensable reference work and an invaluable guide. He also is the author of An Introduction to the Architectural Heritage of County Monaghan. He is a board member of the Irish Landmark Trust. Kevin lives in County Monaghan. 5 MONAGHAN S TUDOR-REVIVAL HOUSES 8pm, Thursday, 20 March 2014 The Market House, Monaghan This talk focuses on the contribution of the British-based architect William Walker to the architectural heritage of Co. Monaghan, specifically its Tudor-Revival country houses. It sheds new light on Walker s background prior to his arrival in Monaghan in 1839 and considers his work here in the wider context of the architectural trends of the early nineteenth century. William s Walkers work in County Monaghan includes Ballybay Market House. Myles Campbell is an architectural historian and a native of County Monaghan. He teaches at the Department of the History of Art and Architecture, Trinity College Dublin, where he delivers lectures and seminars to undergraduate and postgraduate students. Myles recently completed a Ph.D. at Trinity College on the practice of British architects in Ulster in the nineteenth century. His research has earned him awards from bodies such as the Paul Mellon Centre for Studies in British Art, and his publications include a forthcoming essay on the architecture of Monaghan s great country houses. 3 Angels Head, part of Joseph Wilton s sculpture from the Lady Anne Dawson Temple, Dartry designed by James Wyatt
YOUNG & MACKENZIE - ARCHITECTS OF ULSTER, C pm Thursday 3 April 2014 The Market House, Monaghan As Ulster and Belfast in particular - developed rapidly in the 19th century new local architectural and civil engineering firms were established to cater for clients expanding needs, creating in due course an imposing and varied cityscape for Belfast and notable changes to the built environment across the North of Ireland. An examination of one of the largest and longest-lasting of these Belfast firms, Young & Mackenzie, established in the 1850s, reveals the extent to which social, societal and business networks and connections were involved in the receipt of design commissions, from street developments to individual residences; from large-scale commercial premises to significant institutional and civic buildings; as well as new churches and the lavish headquarters of the Presbyterian Church in Ireland. This illustrated lecture will present a wide range of material including the most notable instances of the firm s work during the Victorian, Edwardian and early 20th century periods. Dr Paul Harron is a communications professional with a special interest in architectural history. He holds a PhD (QUB) on Young & Mackenzie Architects, is a former architecture specialist at the Arts Council of NI and was a senior architecture & design editor at Laurence King Publishing, editor at Phaidon Press and Publishing Manager and Commissioning Editor at Appletree Press. He is an Honorary Member of the RSUA, is a past lay judge for the RIBA Awards, sits on the board of Hearth Housing Association and the committee of the UAHS and served on the Historic Buildings Council for NI from 2007 to He has published a number of articles and books including the Public Art Handbook for Northern Ireland and writes regularly for a range of publications including Perspective, Living Design, the Irish Arts Review and the Ulster Tatler. His monograph on Young & Mackenzie will be published by the UAHS later this year. 4
IRON BUILDINGS IN MONAGHAN AND ELSEWHERE 8pm Thursday 10th April The Market House, Monaghan The manufacture of new materials such as corrugated iron during the Victorian Era, allowed buildings to be erected quickly and relatively cheaply. Functional and cost effective, iron can also become a material of beauty in the right hands and setting. The buildings range widely from houses to churches, hospital buildings to military camps, railway stations to Orange halls, and of course, the beloved iron haybarn. While often intended to be a temporary stop-gap solution some of these buildings have now survived for about 150 years and are rightly regarded as part of the our architectural heritage. Iconic amongst iron buildings in Ireland is St. Peter s Church in Laragh. Barry O Reilly was born in Dublin and now lives in Tipperary. As Architectural Heritage Officer with the National Inventory of Architecture, he managed the recent survey and inventory of buildings in County Monaghan. He has been studying the quirky topic of corrugated-iron buildings for many years. This has taken him to every nook and cranny of the island of Ireland in search of examples. 5 St Peter s, Laragh

SOME IRISH HOUSES AND DEMESNES 8pm Tuesday 26 August, The Market House, Monaghan Illustrated talk by Robert O Byrne In 1870, 85% of Ireland s land was in privately owned estates. The landscape featured more than 3000 designed landscapes, country houses and demesnes. In Monaghan, there were at least forty country houses in the mid nineteenth century, including Annamakerrig, Antekell Grove, Castleshane, Gola, Hilton and Lough Fea. In this illustrated talk, Robert O Byrne will discuss how country houses have fared in the last fifty years, drawing on examples from Monaghan and elsewhere. Robert O Byrne is a writer specialising in the fine and decorative arts. He is the author of more than a dozen books, including Luggala Days: The Story of a Guinness House (Cico Books) and The Last Knight, A Tribute to Desmond Fitzgerald 29th Knight of Glin. 11 GATELODGES OF COUNTY MONAGHAN 8pm Tuesday 28 August, The Market House, Monaghan Illustrated talk by Dixie Dean Dixie Dean s important publication The Gate Lodges of Ulster published in 1994 by the Ulster Architectural Heritage Society is the go to publication for anyone interested in these buildings, reflecting as they do on the big house further up the avenue. Their variety from vernacular tradition to ornamental sophistication is well represented in County Monaghan, where sadly many examples have been lost over the years, but equally where many still remain and indeed are well looked after and managed. This talk with Dixie Dean will present example from County Monaghan, which represent an important aspect of Ulster s building past, and architectural history. J.A.K (Dixie) Dean is from Belfast, and studied architecture at Queens University. His interest in the gate lodges of Ulster stems from work carried out when an undergraduate in the early 1960s. He is the author of The Gate Lodges of Ulster published in 1994, and is currently working on a publication of gatelodges elsewhere in Ireland. 12 CASTLE LESLIE - BETWEEN TWO WORLDS Monaghan County Museum n Until end August 2014 Presented by Monaghan County Museum in association with Castle Leslie, Glaslough, Co. Monaghan, this exhibition addresses life in the big house. It examines the Home Rule crisis, the birth of two nations in Ireland and how the estate found itself at the centre of one of the most politically charged times in recent Irish history; World War II and Sir Jack Leslie s service in the British Arm; his capture at Dunkirk and years in a German POW camp. The Leslie family of Glaslough have bridged the divides of Irish life for nearly four centuries. Their estate straddles the Irish border. As both fighters, and writers, family members have argued the cause of Catholicism and Protestantism, Nationalism and Unionism. Well connected in Britain, Ireland and America, the Leslies have always felt a mission to explain - England to the Irish, and Ireland to the World. Audiovisual displays show some rare film footage from as early as the 1930s showing what life was like around the estate and the village of Glaslough. There are installations dotted through the exhibitions recreating some evocative scenes from Sir Jack s life, including his time in captivity during World War II. A brochure to accompany the exhibition www. monaghan.ie/museum/virtual/castleleslie Monaghan County Museum is celebrating 40 years serving the community in 2014 and as part of the celebrations a brochure listing all of the main events for the year can be downloaded at services/museum/events/2014events/ 10
