1 DRUM PORTRAIT OF A VILLAGE Friday 17 & Saturday 18 November, 2017
2 Burns family McGlone family Over the past year, the people of Drum have engaged with artists, curators and heritage specialists to record, create and share authentic representations of Drum past and present. This project is developed as part of Monaghan County Creative Ireland programme. Photo Album of Ireland: Drum The Gallery of Photography s Photo Album team is working with the people of Drum to record the social history of the village held in family photo albums and collections. This emerging digital archive includes photographs of people working the land, family occasions, social and religious events and travels overseas. Photographs dating from the 1870s to the 1960s reveal strong community ties, changing farming methods and effects of modernisation giving a unique insight into life in rural County Monaghan. Krass Clement s Photobook DRUM In 1991, while staying at the Tyrone Guthrie Centre in nearby Annamakerrig, Danish photographer Krass Clement made a series of black and white photographs over the course of one evening in Anderson s pub. Published in 1996, Krass Clement s DRUM is considered to be one of the world s finest photographic books. Now, more than 25 years later, Krass will revisit Drum for a special screening of his photographs in Anderson s pub on Friday 17 November at 7pm. Portrait of Drum Kevin Fox Irish photographer Kevin Fox is working collaboratively with the people of Drum to make a series of portraits taken in homes and other locations in and around the village. Streetscapes and landscape photographs capture the beauty of the built heritage and countryside across the seasons. A series of filmed interviews with a cross section of people record experiences of life in the village. Collectively, the photography and film elements create a unique contemporary portrait of the village of Drum. Johnston family

5 Krass Clement s DRUM Danish photographer Krass Clement s seminal photo book Drum was photographed on a single evening in Anderson s pub in Drum in It opens at the darkening end of a working day, with local men meeting for a drink. Through subtle shifts in focus and masterful filmic sequencing, the book comes to concentrate on one principal character in the shadowy pub: a hunched, weather-beaten old man, sitting alone with his drink. The work is a moving exploration of the artist s perspective on community and the outsider, and stands as a Beckettian meditation on alienation and the terrors of being alone. With only a few rolls of film (and a rumored five bottles of Guinness ), Clement created one of the most important contributions to the international canon of contemporary photo books. Krass Clement Krass Clement Dublin based events: An exhibition of Krass Clement s DRUM and his previously unseen DUBLIN is on display at the Gallery of Photography until January 22. For the gala launch event, there will be a public projection of Clement s work, together with work from Drum: Portrait of a Village on the outdoor cinema screen at Meeting House Square. Venue: Gallery of Photography, Meeting House Square, Temple Bar, Dublin. Admission is free. Krass Clement
