Watercolor Session with Stu Chait, AIA (September 2012) AIA Rochester Featured Building Architect: Passero Associates Location: SUNY Canton This student housing project has been designed to provide apartments with amenities similar to off-campus living, allowing the college to keep upperclassmen on campus. Dubbed the Harry Potter Castle by students, it has filled quickly. Evoking a residential street within the campus environment, the old world architectural style and colorful exterior convey a warm, hometown atmosphere. The stone, stucco, and siding combination on the facade is drawn from a palette native to the area and complements existing campus buildings and the surrounding community. A large lobby and a two-story lounge are located in the center of the building, creating a social activities core area that is separated from the quiet residential wings. An open grand staircase connects the lounge area with the mezzanine, where a large classroom is situated. A coffee shop is located in the lobby and is connected to the outside patio. The project was designed and constructed in a healthy and ecologically responsible manner, incorporating principles and practices developed by the USGBC, and to meet LEED Silver certification standards. 3

AIA National has put together an incentive program for early renewal. Deadline for all changes and updates is December 15, 2012 AIA Newsletter: Starting in January 2013, we will no longer be producing the paper copy of the newsletter. It will be ed to all members and advertisers and will be posted on our website. AIA Rochester Events: Starting immediately, most programs sponsored by the AIA Rochester chapter will require registration through our website. Please read information on programs carefully and register online through PayPal. Questions/concerns, please contact the chapter office at Proposed NYS CEU changes - By Laura M. Cooney, AIA At the September AIANYS Board meeting, Rob Lopez from the State Board of Architecture (NYS Board) spoke and stated that the NYS Board was considering making changes to their Continuing Education requirements for licensure. The following is a summary of the proposed requirements with changes: hrs./year (calendar year: Jan. - Dec.) 2. All CE s may be taken via structured education activities, including online 3. All 12 hrs./year must be HSW 4. 75% of CE content must be HSW to earn HSW credit (same as now) 5. HSW subject areas Bldg. Systems, Construction Contract Admin., Construction Docs, Legal - codes, etc 6. No carryover credit (Same as now) 7. No credit for self-reported activities (same as now) 8. NYS Board awaiting conclusion of NCARB discussion; however, would like to continue opportunity to grant conditional registrations for 1 year (1 year grace period and 1 credit per additional month) 9. NYS Board awaiting NCARB delayed registration discussion (coming back into NYS) 10. Actual Exemptions permitted for active military service, serious medical condition, or other like hardship (can currently only give adjustments ) 11. Remove exemption from CE requirements for first-time licensees for first three years 12. Other topics that are not HSW are not permitted to count towards the 12 hours required each calendar year The AIANYS Board had initial concerns for Rob to bring back to his board and questions for him. The biggest concern was the removal of the exemption from CE requirements for newly licensed individual. I stated that the cost of the ARE and the amount of studying/learning for the ARE should count towards CE credits and suggested that they do not remove the existing exemption. A majority of the AIANYS Board agreed with this statement. We were glad to see the possibility of exemptions for military service and serious medical conditions. The NYS Board is looking for comments back from AIANYS by the time NCARB comes back with their decisions (June 2013). If members have any questions or comments to be given back to the NYS Board, they can either contact Rob Lopez directly or contact Laura M. Cooney. Comments will be conveyed back to the AIANYS Board for their comments to the NYS Board.

Daniel Pieters, AIA has over 18 years of diverse project expertise and Jeff Roloson has over 25 years experience in construction and architectural fields. SWBR Architects recently participated in a ground breaking event for a new Heritage Christian Services (HCS) home in Brighton. The 3,200 sq. ft. home on Winton Road will become the permanent residence for six HCS People. The opening date is scheduled for the end of the year. SWBR Architects announces that Kelly Holland recently received his architectural license from the State of New York. Holland continues in his project design responsibilities and moves into the position of project architect. He earned his Master of Architecture, Bachelor of Architecture, and Certificate of Preservation Studies from Tulane University and resides in Phoenix, NY. SWBR Architects recently completed a commemorative clock tower which was unveiled on the campus of Roberts Wesleyan College (RWC) in Chili. The tower was created to honor the service of past RWC president Dr. Bill Crothers and his wife Rilla. Through a thorough and intricate concept process, SWBR established a design that included a traditional, obelisk monument with a layering of details that included light channels, brick core to match older campus building designs, and as exterior facing bench with cascading steps for more informal gatherings. AIANYS The average college student graduates with close to $30,000 of debt. Those who attend private institutions accumulate even more. This is despite the fact that a high percentage of students work at least part time while studying. Suffice to say, college students are in desperate need of financial assistance. Every year we make contributions to our favorite charities, we would like to suggest that you consider one more. We request that you give back to your own profession. AIA Rochester, along with the Architectural Foundation of Greater Rochester provides architectural scholarships to area students and our funding stream has not increased in many years. Every year the number of qualified candidates outstrips our ability to provide funds. We need to increase our endowment and our annual fundraising. Won t you please make a substantial contribution this year and make it an annual event. We, and the students we continue to support, thank you.
