PAGE 3 TRANS-LUX VOLUME 27 NO. 2 ADSW Ends Sponsorship of Northern Virginia Antiques & Modernism Show On July 22rd, ADSW President Jim Linz and Treasurer Ira Raskin met with Pappabello Shows owner Arthur Farbenbloom, new show manager Bob James (Armacost Shows), an account manager from the marketing company Ad Strategies, and Arlington Kiwanis President Khalid Siraj and other Kiwanis representatives for a review and discussion of the 3rd Annual Northern Virginia Antiques & Modernism Show. Linz and Raskin discussed the preliminary results of an ADSW survey of Modernism dealers showing strong dissatisfaction with the show, particularly with advertising and marketing. The next day, Farbenbloom called Linz to inform him that ADSW would not be invited to continue as a cosponsor of the 2010 show. Mr. Farbenbloom apparently took exception to the open critique of his efforts at the July 22nd meeting. The ADSW Board began a review of its continued participation in the Northern Virginia Antiques & Modernism Show at its regularly scheduled meeting June 22nd, but delayed action until after the discussion about the show with Pappabello and the Kiwanis. The Board met August 13th and formally terminated the contractual relationship with Pappabello Shows. Contact has already been made with several promoters to explore new options for Antiques & Modernism Show Attendance/Dealer Participation Drop For the second straight year attendance at and dealer participation in the Northern Virginia Antiques & Modernism Show fell sharply. Attendance fell to roughly a third of the attendance during The number of Modernism dealers participating in the show dropped to 20, half the number participating in Overall the show on June 21-22, 2009, had only 105 dealers, down from the 165 advertised in The Antiques & Modernism Show is ADSW s most important fundraising event of the year. Our inability to recruit more dealers reduced our pay- (Continued on page 4)

The decreased payment from Pappabello was partially offset by increased revenues from advertising in the show program and advance ticket sales. Dealer Survey Shows Dissatisfaction Following the show, ADSW sent a questionnaire to Modernism dealers participating in the 2009 show as well as those who participated in the 2008 show but chose not to return this year. We asked both about their satisfaction with the show under the current promoter and options for the future. Although the show generally received high marks for the ease of load in and load out, roughly 80 percent of respondents had strong criticism of efforts to advertise and promote the show. Two out-of-town dealers declined to comment on advertising and promotion because they were not familiar with efforts to promote the show in the Washington area. Among the concerns noted were the limited advertising in the Washington Post (there were no classified ads and no display ads in the Home Section in Virginia and the District). Poor attendance was cited by all respondents as a drag on sales. While many dealers recognized current economic conditions as contributing factors, they blamed the poor attendance and sales primarily on the limited advertising. Clearly, not all dealers had negative views. Nor did the complaining dealers necessarily rule out future participation in the Northern Virginia Antiques & Modernism Show, with or without ADSW sponsorship. Still, 40 percent of the responding dealers said that they were uncertain or unlikely to return in As was the case in the survey following the 2008 show, many dealers also expressed concern about the lack of a distinct Modernism section., a structure ADSW has pursued from the onset of the joint show. Post Show Meeting Heightens Concerns Although Raskin and Linz approached the meeting of July 22nd with strong reservations about whether ADSW should continue to co-sponsor the show, they held out hope that they would receive assurances that the dealers concerns would be addressed.

PAGE 5 TRANS-LUX VOLUME 27 NO. 2 Such assurances were not, however, provided. In May, both Pappabello and Armacost hired Ad Strategies to handle advertising and promotion of their antique shows. The Ad Strategies representative said that the print media is dying and that their focus is on the Internet and radio/television. Although the Northern Virginia Antiques & Modernism Show was the first antiques show Ad Strategies promoted, the representative said that the company did not attempt to gather information on the effectiveness of their advertising efforts in order to guide future efforts. He indicated that he expects to further reduce advertising in the Washington Post next year. Other concerns about the promotion of the show were noted. For example, two antique trade papers ran press releases prepared for the 2008 show rather than for the current year. Farbenbloom said that both papers ran the wrong press release. For the second year in a row, no classified ad appeared in the Washington Post. This was again attributed by the promoter to a Washington Post error. Finally, the address of the Thomas Jefferson Community Center was incorrect in the ads prepared by Ad Strategies, including the few ads that ran in the Washington Post. They gave the address as nd Street S, roughly ten blocks from the show at nd Street S. Neither Ad Strategies nor Farbenbloom were aware of the error until it was brought it to their attention at the meeting. Farbenbloom said that the incorrect address was just the other side of the building and would not have caused problems for drivers with GPS. The error, however, was significant because customers using MapQuest or a GPS to guide them to the show from Washington DC or the East would most likely have been routed along Washington Boulevard rather than Glebe Road and thus missed the show signage placed along Glebe Road. The address used was not the other side of the building. Linz and Raskin conferred briefly after the meeting and agreed that they would recommend to the Board that ADSW withdraw its sponsorship of the show and explore other alternatives. Pappabello Plans to Continue Show In his call of July 23rd, Pappabello owner Arthur Farbenbloom indicated that he plans to continue the Northern Virginia Antiques & Modernism

PAGE 6 TRANS-LUX VOLUME 27 NO. 2 (Continued from page 5) Show without ADSW sponsorship. Because the Thomas Jefferson Community Center will not be available on the dates originally selected by the promoter for the show and Arlington County plans to raise the rent for the facility, Farbenbloom plans to work with the Kiwanis to select a new date and possibly a new location for the show. ADSW wishes both the Kiwanis and Pappabello Shows success. Despite our disagreements with Farbenbloom and Ad Strategies over the adequacy of show promotion, on a personal level both Linz and Raskin indicated that it was a pleasure to work with Farbenbloom during the past 3+ years. Dealers/Customers Favor Return to Modernism Show Although some dealers were open to a continuation of a joint general antiques & Modernism show, most favored a return to a stand-alone Modernism show. Several favored moving the show back to the city. None favored dropping ADSW sponsorship of a stand-alone Modernism Show. During the 3-year run of the Northern Virginia Antiques & Modernism show many ADSW members have complained that the excitement of the stand alone show was lost under the combined show. Many found it difficult to locate the modernism dealers because there was no signage and the Modernism dealers were surrounded by general antiques dealers. Board Exploring Options At its August 13th meeting, the Board voted to continue ADSW sponsorship of a Modernism show but to return to a standalone show rather than pursuing another combined general antiques & Modernism show. Ira Raskin and Jim Linz will lead efforts to find a new location. What Do You Think? The design of the new Expo is wide open. Where should the new show be held? When should it be held? Should the show be packaged with other events to form a Modernism weekend? What should the new show be called? Are you willing to help manage the show? Send you comments and suggestions to iraskin@adsw.org

PAGE 7 TRANS-LUX VOLUME 27 NO. 2 News and Notes from the Deco Philes Volunteers Needed for Benefit Bash The Lord & Taylor Benefit Bash returns to the Chevy Chase and White Flint stores November 10, 2009, and ADSW will again participate. Volunteers are needed to sell tickets for the event. The $5 tickets entitle the purchaser to 20 percent off any one item and an unlimited savings pass good for 15% off everything in the store, including fragrances and cosmetics. ADSW retains all revenues from ticket sales and also receives a portion of sales at the door. Contact Karyn Jarboe kjarboe@adsw.org to volunteer. Senator Theatre Sold at Auction Baltimore s National Register-listed Senator Theatre was sold for $810,000 to Baltimore City at a July 22nd auction held by Alex Cooper Auctions. The Art Deco gem which has been operated by the Kiefaber family since its opening in 1939, has faced repeated challenges over the past several years as it struggled to remain a first run movie house. Although the exterior of the theatre is on the National Register, the interior is not protected and the foreclosure sale could lead to its gutting. For more information about the theatre go to The city is expected to issue a Request for Proposals to find someone willing to lease the Senator and operate it as either a theatre or entertainment venue. Kennedy-Warren Decision Postponed Again The Historic Preservation Review Board hearing on ADSW s landmark application covering the interiors of the Kennedy-Warren was finally held June 25th after ADSW broke off negotiations with B.F. Saul over Saul s insistence that the dining room be excluded from the application. The Historic Preservation Office staff report issued shortly before the hearing recommended that the public spaces, including the lobby,

PAGE 8 TRANS-LUX VOLUME 27 NO. 2 lounges, ballroom, promenades, and dining room be listed. While the HPO was sympathetic toward the corridors and plan, they concluded that they did not merit listing. Things seemed to be on track for approval by the HPRB until BF Saul objected to listing any portion of the interiors and presented a series of legal arguments questioning the Board s legal authority to list a private residence without the consent of the owner. Because the HPO staff had no advance notice of the BF Saul claims, they recommended, and the Board agreed to, a delay in the hearing until the Saul claims could be evaluated. The HPO staff is working with Saul and ADSW in hopes that a compromise agreeable to all parties can we crafted. In the meantime, the ADSW application remains on file and no new work permits can be issued until the issue is resolved. Nostalgia Fair The 4th Annual Mid-Atlantic Nostalgia Convention will be held August 27-29, 2009, at the Clarion Hotel, 980 Hospitality Way, Aberdeen, Maryland. The 3-day film festival salutes the good old days of radio, television and movies. It also features a drive-in movie on the hotel parking lot Friday night. Among those making personal appearances will be Academy Award Winning Actress Celeste Holm (All About Eve), former Miss America Lee Meriweather (Barnaby Jones, Catwoman on Batman), Johnny Whitaker (Family Affair), James Best (Dukes of Hazzard), and Bob Hastings (McHale s Navy, Captain Video). The Fair will feature a series of panels and presentations including a cartoon festival and a recreation of an Old Time Radio program. Movies will be shown 24-hours a day. Among the movies to be shown is the 1933 version of Alice in Wonderland starring Gary Grant and Gary Cooper. Two ballrooms will be set aside for vendors. Jeanette Radford Joins Board Jeanette Radford attended the June 2009 Board meeting and was elected to the Board on an interim basis. She will stand for election to a full 2-year term in this Fall s election.

PAGE 9 TRANS-LUX VOLUME 27 NO. 2 Jeanette wasted no time getting to work, quickly setting up a Zazzle.com site to sell ADSW merchandise like the mug and tote bag shown below. To check out all the latest merchandise go to adswdc A great new way to support ADSW. Thanks Jeanette! Save the Date Jewelry Show and Tell On Sunday, October 4, 2009, ADSW member Ana Escobar will host an Art Deco jewelry show and tell at one of Washington s Best Addresses. Watch the website or ADSW announce for details. If you do not currently receive announcements of upcoming events, sign up now at Thanks Expo Volunteers! Although the 3rd Annual Northern Virginia Antiques & Modernism Show was a disappointment, it was not because of lack of effort on the part of ADSW volunteers. Led by Ira Raskin and Jim Linz, ADSW recruited dealers, designed a new ad card for the show, drafted press releases, mailed ad cards to 5000 Decophiles, and prepared the guide to dealers. David Cotter, Will Cubbedge, and Karyn Jarboe sold ads in the program guide making it self sustaining for the first time. Brian Whaley and Joel Shprentz used the website and ADSW-announce list to promote the show. Karyn Jarboe, Jerold Epstein, Brenda Forman, Deborah Chalfie, Cerinda Loschinkohl, Sue Grabowski, Lori Crandall, Amy McMenamin, Paola Bernacchi, Cathy Willis, Brian Whaley, Linda Lyons, Thomas Ede, David Cotter, Jeanette Radford, Lou Simchowitz, Jonathan Mazur, and Jennifer O Boyle served at the admissions table or ADSW table. The professionalism of ADSW s volunteers drew special praise from Kiwanis President Khalid Siraj.

PAGE 10 TRANS-LUX VOLUME 27 NO. 2 A Message From the President By Jim Linz As I reluctantly assume the presidency of the Art Deco Society of Washington, I am thankful that my predecessors, Jonathan Mazur and Dana Ott, left the Society in good financial health and on the verge of having a state-ofthe-art website. Still, there are major challenges facing the Society declining membership, spotty attendance at programs, and, as discussed on pages 3 through 6, developing a replacement for the failed Northern Virginia Antiques & Modernism show. To address these challenges we need the help of our members, former members (Who better to tell us what we are doing wrong?), and prospective members (To tell us what we need to do to convince them to join.) There are many ways that members can help maintain and build the vitality of ADSW. First, we need additional Board members to help direct the operations of the Society. The October Board elections are almost upon us. If you are willing to serve just let me know at president@adsw.org. But, you do not have to be on the Board to help. Consider some of the following members who made significant contributions without being on the Board Lynda Schmitz Fuhrig researches exhibitions, entertainment, and events to prepare the Deco calendar published in Trans-Lux and listed on the website. Lori Crandal organized and taught programs on making ribbon flowers and creating 1940s hairstyles. In the coming months, she plans to organize a vintage fashion show. Lynne Masterson hosted a vintage tea at her home. Frank Morra opened his home for several show and tell events. Gene de Anzorena shared his memories (and photographs) of the last two World Congresses with Trans-Lux readers. Clive Foss gave a slide presentation on Art Deco around the world based on his world travels. Brenda Forman gave a Powerpoint lecture on Art Deco jewelry. Ana Escobar will host a jewelry show and tell at her apartment. (Continued on page 11)

PAGE 11 TRANS-LUX VOLUME 27 NO. 2 (Continued from page 10) Obviously, there are many ways you can help even if your work or personal schedule precludes joining the Board. It can be as simple as selling tickets to the Lord and Taylor Benefit Bash to friends, coworkers, and relatives or convincing friends to join ADSW. Or, as Sue Grabowski did, you can tell your friends about the latest ADSW preservation effort. Similarly, you can research and write an article for Trans-Lux, host an event at your home, or tell us about a play or performance that other members might be interested in attending. We ll make every effort to bring it to the attention of our followers through an announcement. One of the quickest ways you can help is by simply providing feedback to me or any board member. In order to make changes to better serve you, we need to know things such as the types of programs you like and dislike. your preference for evening vs. weekend programs where programs should be held past programs that are worth repeating? To make it easy, just click on the link and tell me what you think jlinz@adsw.org One of my pet peeves since joining the Board has been the limited ADSW website content on Art Deco in Washington. It s hard to find a picture of an Art Deco building in Washington on the website. I would like to give the website a distinct Washington, DC flavor and, at the same time, strengthen our education and preservation missions by Completing the updated inventory of art deco buildings in the Washington area started by Lincoln Fairchild, including photographs, and placing the results on the website Digitizing our existing slide set of Art Deco buildings so that they can be placed on the website (Linda Lyons has initiated this process) Creating, and putting on the website, a series of self-guided walking tours of Metro-accessible Art Deco. Encouraging members to contribute copies of photos, brochures, postcards, and other memorabilia showing Washington, D. C. in the 1920s- 1950s. Reorganizing website links to place greater emphasis on complimentary organizations in the Washington metropolitan area such as the Arlington Heritage Alliance, Silver Spring Historical Society, Friends of the Greenbelt Museum, and D.C. Preservation League. Can you help? Just let me know.

PAGE 12 TRANS-LUX VOLUME 27 NO. 2 Franklin Simon & Co. Designs for Women Part 2 Franklin Simon Specialty Shops was founded in 1902 by Franklin Simon and Herman A. Flurscheim. It s flagship store was located at 414 Fifth Avenue, becoming the first major retailer to locate above 34th street. The 280,000 square foot store closed in the 1960s. Although Franklin Simon & Co. was known for its European fashions, between 1921 and 1955, the company was assigned rights to over 200 fashion designs by American designers., including Taube Davis, Maude Siegel, Mildred Schmolze, Katherine Burns, and. Its first design patent, D58,406 was awarded to Franklin Simon, his only design patent. The following pages show the evolution of Franklin Simon designs between 1930 and1936 when it suddenly stopped patenting designs. It is not clear whether they stopped designing their own clothes after 1936 or simply stopped applying for patents. It was not until 1950 that rights to another fashion design was assigned to Franklin Simon. Only two designs were patented in 1950, both for bathing suits. The next, and final, design patent was awarded to Franklin Simon in Left: D80,280; Middle: D80,796; Right: D80,798:

PAGE 20 TRANS-LUX VOLUME 27 NO. 2 Tenth Art Deco World Congress By Eugenio de Anzorena Last May I attended the Tenth World Congress on Art Deco in Montreal. Toronto The Pre-Congress events were held in Toronto beginning with breakfast at the CARLU, which had been the 1939 Round Room Restaurant and the auditorium of Eaton s department store, beautifully restored as a venue for special events, including a fountain designed by Lalique. Following this event, a morning walking tour of Deco buildings took place, culminating at the Royal Ontario Museum with its new addition designed by Daniel Libeskind. (Continued on page 21)

PAGE 21 TRANS-LUX VOLUME 27 NO. 2 Some of the participants took advantage of the lunch break to tour the Art Galley of Ontario with its magnificent addition designed by Frank Gehry. The evening culminated in a dinner dance held in the Library and Imperial Room of the Fairmont Royal York Hotel, with a sumptuous meal.

PAGE 22 TRANS-LUX VOLUME 27 NO. 2 The following day we took a bus tour of more of Toronto s art deco buildings, culminating in a period fashion show and tea in the garden of Parkwood, an estate one hour east in Oshawa. Montreal On Sunday we traveled to Montreal for the opening reception at the Montreal City Hall, where Sandra Cohen-Rose, the organizer of the Congress, introduced us to her excellent team, as well as to the Mayor of Montreal, while we enjoyed one of the wonderful meals provided during the entire Congress. At this reception we had the pleasure to renew friendships and meet those who had not attended the Toronto Pre Congress.

PAGE 23 TRANS-LUX VOLUME 27 NO. 2 For each tour we received a thoroughly researched descriptive brochure in color prepared by Mrs. Cohen-Rose and her husband, Colin. The entire Congress, including both the pre and post sessions were superbly organized and the food was truly exceptional. My only disappointment is that we did not visit any private residences, as had been the case at previous Conrgresses. The next day we enjoyed a bus and walking tour of Rosemont and Little Italy, including some exceptional churches such as St. Espirit, which is the only pure art deco Church in Canada, designed by Joseph Egilde Cessaire Daoust in 1932 and Saint Jean Berchmans.

PAGE 24 TRANS-LUX VOLUME 27 NO. 2 We also visited the botanical gardens designed in 1932 by Lucien M. Keroak with its wonderful bas-reliefs. The evening culminated with a grand buffet in the Main Pavilion of the University of Montreal ( ) located in the tower building, designed by the most famous Canadian Deco architect of the period, Ernest Cormier. On Tuesday we began the routine, which continued for the following two days with lectures in the morning at McGill University and tours in the afternoon. The morning lectures covered such subjects as night clubs, movie palaces and the now closed restaurant of Eaton s in Montreal. Our excellent lunches took place at the Arts and Crafts Faculty Club on campus. The afternoon tour took us to view the exteriors of apartment houses in the Cote Des Neiges area, the Snowdon Theater designed in 1937 by Daniel John Crighton and St. Joseph s Oratory, a grand building on Mt. Royal designed from by a collaboration of many architects, including Cormier. An evening reception at the McGill University Library took place to show us Art Deco books from their collections. Wednesday s lectures included one on the Ecole du Meuble, where furniture was manufactured from 1935 to In the afternoon we had a curator s tour of that furniture in the Montreal Museum of Fine arts, as well as walking tour of downtown Deco, including the great Central Railroad Station (1920s to 1943) designed by John Campbell Merrett, with beautiful interior bas-relief sculptures by Charles Fraser Comfort.

PAGE 25 TRANS-LUX VOLUME 27 NO. 2 The evening event was a dinner dance at the Mount Stephen Club, a wonderfully preserved Victorian mansion. At the silent auction I bought a cup and saucer designed by England s Susie Cooper. Thursday s lectures included Art Deco in Belgium and the Polish Pavilion at the 1939 Worlds Fair, as well as an invitation to the 11 th World Congress in Rio de Janeiro. The afternoon tours were bus and walking tours of Old Montreal and the Saint-Henri neighborhood. The highlight was the Aldred building, Montreal s most notable high style high-rise art deco building (1929, Barott and Blackader). It is Montreal s only example of a New York style ziggurat skyscraper. Nature and technology are reflected in the cast bronze panels depicting flocks of birds perched on telegraph wires.

PAGE 26 TRANS-LUX VOLUME 27 NO. 2 Friday it was off to Ottawa for the day where we visited the Supreme Court (E. Cormier, 1939), a magnificent building with two candelabrum-style fluted metal lamp standards and bas-relief bronze doors at the entrance. We started off with lunch and a visit to the National Gallery of Canada (Moshe Safdie). We also visited two banks (the Bank of Canada and the Bank of Montreal), but the highlight (perhaps of the entire Congress) was the French Embassy (Eugene Beaudoin, ) on a prized piece of land overlooking Rideau Falls. The interior is quite impressive with its wonderful frescos, Aubusson tapestries, superb use of materials and furnishings, particularly the Smoking Room with new deco furniture, perfect for the room. (Continued on page 27)

PAGE 27 TRANS-LUX VOLUME 27 NO. 2 Dinner was served on the run in the Fairmont le Chateau Montbello, the world s largest log lodge, built in the 1930 s. Then, back to Montreal by bus. Saturday we were on our own, but encouraged to view art deco books and Cormier drawings at the library of the Canadian Center for Architecture. In the evening the closing gala dinner dance was held at the 1930 Lion d Or. Sunday was a tour to the eastern townships, primarily to visit churches where concentric arches are made of very decorative brickwork, based on the designs of Dom Paul Bellot in England and the Netherlands. He also collaborated in the design of the Benedictine Abbey St. Benoit du Las ( ) near Montreal. We also visited some churches that will serve other uses, such as Paroisse Ste. Marguerite that is up for sale and

PAGE 28 TRANS-LUX VOLUME 27 NO. 2 Paroisse St. Benoit, which will be used as a community center. Quebec Early Monday morning we boarded the train for Quebec City. Upon arrival at the train station, we began a walking tour of the old city made up mainly of buildings prior to the Deco age, including a short ferry ride across the St. Lawrence River to see the city from a slight distance. We walked to the Clarendon Hotel (Art Nouveau and Art Deco) where we spent the night. The next morning, we boarded a bus for a tour of Beauport for more examples of Bellotism, including a wonderful lunch at a restaurant overlooking the Montmorency Falls. The afternoon tour consisted of post war buildings, culminating with a visit to the Price Building ( , Ross and Macdonald), an 18 floor office structure. In 2001, the 16 th and 17 th floors became the Premier of Quebec s official residence. The design consists of a stepping shape to reduce the building s profile when viewed from the street, reminiscent of Finnish architect Eliel Saarinen s work.

PAGE 29 TRANS-LUX VOLUME 27 NO. 2 Gone but Not Forgotten: Gale Storm Actress and singer Gale Storm died June 27, Born Josephine Owaissa Cottle on April 5, 1922, Storm was 87. Growing up in Houston, Storm took dance and ice skating lessons and became active in school plays. With the encouragement of friends and teachers, she entered and won a local radio talent contest Jesse L. Lasky s Gateway to Hollywood in She won the national contest in Hollywood and began her career with RKO Pictures, appearing as Gale Storm. Although she was dropped by RKO after 6 months, she appeared in many B musicals, mysteries, and westerns for Monogram and Universal in the early 1940s. Among her films were Tom Brown s School Days (1940), Swing Parade of 1946 (1946), Freckles Comes Home (1942), and Sunbonnet Sue (1945). Storm s big break, however, came in 1952 when she starred in My Little Margie. Margie was originally intended as the summer replacement for I Love Lucy but became one of the most watched sitcoms of the 1950s. It ran in syndication for several decades. Equally successful was her next television series, The Gale Storm Show, more often referred to as Oh Susanna! Gale starred as the social director on a cruise ship along with Charles Farrell as the Captain and Zasu Pitts as the ship s manicurist. Storm also launched a successful night club and singing career in the 1950s. Check out YouTube for two of her most successful songs I Hear You Knocking and Dark Moon. The Dark Moon video is from Oh Susanna. Appearing with her is Craig Stevens, best known as the star of the television series Peter Gunn. In the 1960s Storm largely disappeared from view as she battled alcoholism. Having conquered the disease, she later became a crusader against the stigma associated with alcoholism, particularly as it applied to women.
