2 photo: Harmen Kraai photo: Harmen Kraai Noorderbegraafplaats Laan LS Hilversum Willem Marinus Dudok was born in Amsterdam in 1884 After graduating as an engineer from the Royal Military Academy in Breda, he was involved in the design and construction of fortresses and barracks for the Dutch army In 1913, he started a career as a civil architect, when he was appointed temporary director of the Public Works department of the city of Leiden While in his early work Dudok's style is closely related to that of the Amsterdam School, later the influence of Frank Lloyd Wright becomes more important, resulting in a style that is sometimes referred to as Cubistic Expressionism Dudok's work is of some international influence He died in Hilversum in 1974 and is buried at the Noorderbegraafplaats (Northern Cemetary), one of his own designs m² Willem Marinus Dudok Hilversum Municipality Harmen photo: Harmen Kraai Sunrise to sunset Railway station Hilversum-Noord (3 minutes walk to the East) 2

4 photo: Maarten Fleskens photo: Maarten Fleskens Turbine 3e Binnenvestgracht NR Leiden /t/turbine 'Het Nieuwe Werken' as 'the New World of Working' is called in Dutch, demands for a fresh vision on working spaces The structure and composition of organisations is changing and the segregation between private life and business life is fading To meet this world, 350 square meters of industrial floor space have been transformed into an inspiring hotspot for 18 creative entrepreneurs or freelancers Studio ÜberDutch and Renée Schuffelers created 18 one-man-offices shaped into mobile platforms that promote collaboration in projects A central object called 'TURBINE' marks the conversation space, facilitating meetings and presentations This bright space features ornamental supersize lamellae, which generate a magnificent visual effect and serve as a diffuse screen between the conversation space and the working stations Additional needs of the entrepreneurs are fulfilled with a quiet room and a fancy relax spot The vivid graphics on the floor and workstations are designed by Duel photo: Maarten Fleskens m² Main designer, Interior architect Interior architect Graphic designer Studio ÜberDutch UberDutch Monday - Friday: Renée Schuffelers Duel Portaal 4

5 photo: René de Wit photo: René de Wit Exhibition Rooms Museum Boerhaave Lange Sint Agnietenstraat WC Leiden When Museum Boerhaave moved to the Caecilia-Gasthuis, this former hospital had to be renovated and redesigned The exhibition rooms and library were designed within the framework and preconditions of the restoration plan During the restoration, the different buildings of the complex were positioned around a courtyard, making it possible to make a horizontal tour of the complex The result is a sequence of exhibition rooms, each with their own unique character In terms of facilities, exhibition materials were developed that do justice to the famous collection of this museum A range of display cabinets, platforms and plinths were produced which can be seen throughout the building in different positions; horizontally or vertically, free-standing, lying or suspended Without transgressing the historic structure, they form an intermediary layer between building and collection, giving the heterogeneous rooms of the building a greater sense of unity photo: René de Wit m² Graphic designer Lighting designer Lighting designer Martien Jansen Architekt 2D3D Henk van der Geest Lichtontwerpen Van der Sterre Peetoom Government Buildings Agency Central Management Studio-M10 Tuesday-Saturday: h Sundays and holidays: h Museum Boerhaave is in all school holidays - with exception of the summer holiday! - also opened on Monday: h Train: The museum is a 10-minutes' walk from the Leiden NS station and is indicated by signs Bus: various lines; Breestraat stop (5 minutes walk) Line 15, 56; Lange Gracht/Korte Mare stop (7 minutes walk) Cars: can be parked at Molen de Valk (paid parking) or Oude Singel (paid parking), or you may use the Haagweg car park Free shuttle buses run to the museum from Haagweg and back to the car park Bicycles may be parked in front of the museum (unguarded) 5

6 National Museum of Ethnology Steenstraat BS Leiden Based on the 1993 preliminary study into the possibilities for adequate accommodation for this museum and a spatial and technical improvement of quality of the existing group of buildings, it was decided to radically renovate the buildings and site The permanent and temporary exhibitions have been moved to the former university teaching hospital (architect: HFGN Camp), while the outdoor exhibition has been moved to the museum's gardens So far, the threshold-lowering sculpture garden has not been realised The supporting staff facilities have been realised in the former building for Pathological Anatomy (architect: J Lokhorst), whose eastern wing (which was lost in WWII) has been restored The choice for a distributed organisation has the added advantage that the different buildings contrast with one another in terms of functionality This also positively contributes to the flexibility Responsible project architects within OD 205 were Martien Jansen and Roy Lim m² Landscape designer Services engineer Building physics consultant Exhibition designer Structural engineer OD 205 Ank Bleeker & Anneke Nauta Grontmij Technical Management Nelissen Ingenieursbureau Opera Van de Laar Government Buildings Agency South West Studio-M10 Tuesday to Sunday and holidays h The museum is closed on Monday Except on Monday 22 February, 5 April, 3, 10 en 24 May, 18 en 25 October, 20 en 27 December The museum is also closed on: The 1st of January, Queens day (31 March), During Leidens Ontzet on 3/4 October and on 25 December The museum (Steenstraat 1) is a five-minute walk from the Leiden Centraal railway station 6

8 photo: Anneke Janson Bandstand The Water Lily Houtlaan EN Leiden The federation of Dutch s organized for her members a contest to design a new bandstand in a park in Leiden The contribution 'The Water Lily' of Anneke Janson was by the jury and the public voted as winner The design was built in 1998 and is being used as a platform for both dance and music performances The design is described as third sphere between the green and the water Striking is the vaulted roof, an outwardly opened construction of five hypar scales Further invites the open roof to listen, especially at some distance on the banks of the water photo: Anneke Janson m² Structural engineer Anneke Janson ABT gemeente leiden vilda 8

10 photo: Luuk Kramer photo: Luuk Kramer Twisted Corner Alexander Gogelstraat DV Leiden For this high density area bordering the city centre, MVRDV in Rotterdam conceived a master plan based on a double ground level: closed building blocks on half sunken parking-lots This allowed for a densely built neighbourhood, but green and with little traffic The house was built for a young family From the beginning, the value of the corner position of the plot was fully exploited The clients were extensively involved in the conception and building process, watching over and nourishing the tectonic quality of the design The lateral façade of the house ending the block presents an intriguing and dynamic play of lines and volume This is brought about by shifts in the orientation of the façade at each of the three floors A transformation of the geometry of the front and back façades over the length of this side is thereby created Four supporting columns in the house are freeing the lateral façade from its load bearing function, enabling this free play photo: Luuk Kramer Project is not public! m² Main designer, Sophie Valla s Marc Koehler s Floor en Barry Pepers Sophie_Valla_architects From the central station Leiden, just 5 minutes walk 10
