photo: Rene de Wit photo: Rene de Wit National Museum of Ethnology Steenstraat BS Leiden Based on the 1993 preliminary study into the possibilities for adequate accommodation for this museum and a spatial and technical improvement of quality of the existing group of buildings, it was decided to radically renovate the buildings and site The permanent and temporary exhibitions have been moved to the former university teaching hospital (architect: HFGN Camp), while the outdoor exhibition has been moved to the museum's gardens So far, the threshold-lowering sculpture garden has not been realised The supporting staff facilities have been realised in the former building for Pathological Anatomy (architect: J Lokhorst), whose eastern wing (which was lost in WWII) has been restored The choice for a distributed organisation has the added advantage that the different buildings contrast with one another in terms of functionality This also positively contributes to the flexibility Responsible project architects within OD 205 were Martien Jansen and Roy Lim Project is public! m² Landscape designer Services engineer Building physics consultant Exhibition designer Structural engineer OD 205 Ank Bleeker & Anneke Nauta Grontmij Technical Management Nelissen Ingenieursbureau Opera Van de Laar Government Buildings Agency South West Studio-M10 photo: Rene de Wit Tuesday to Sunday and holidays h The museum is closed on Monday Except on Monday 22 February, 5 April, 3, 10 en 24 May, 18 en 25 October, 20 en 27 December The museum is also closed on: The 1st of January, Queens day (31 March), During Leidens Ontzet on 3/4 October and on 25 December The museum (Steenstraat 1) is a five-minute walk from the Leiden Centraal railway station 7

photo: Rene de Wit photo: Rene de Wit Facade Museum Boerhaave Lange Sint Agnietenstraat WC Leiden The design for the façade renovation of the museum pertains to entirely replacing the existing façade with a modular façade The ground floor is fully glazed As such, the auditorium will have the desired open relation with the public area: showpiece and shop window of the museum The floor is fitted with enclosed profiled panels that serve as filling for the frameworks of the modular façade The restoration workshop receives its required day light via skylights, while the closed frontage can be used to house all sorts of systems A fold-up section in the closed façade meets the Health & Safety Act, which stipulates views on the outside world from the workplace photo: Rene de Wit Project is public! 2006 Structural engineer Studio M10 Van de Laar Government Buildings Agency, South-West Management Studio-M10 Tuesday-Saturday: h Sundays and holidays: h Museum Boerhaave is in all school holidays - with exception of the summer holiday! - also opened on Monday: h Train: The museum is a 10-minutes' walk from the Leiden NS station and is indicated by signs Bus: various lines; Breestraat stop (5 minutes? walk) Line 15, 56; Lange Gracht/Korte Mare stop (7 minutes walk) Cars: can be parked at Molen de Valk (paid parking) or Oude Singel (paid parking), or you may use the Haagweg car park Free shuttle buses run to the museum from Haagweg and back to the car park Bicycles may be parked in front of the museum (unguarded) 8

photo: Luuk Kramer photo: Luuk Kramer Twisted Corner Alexander Gogelstraat DV Leiden For this high density area bordering the city centre, MVRDV in Rotterdam conceived a master plan based on a double ground level: closed building blocks on half sunken parking-lots This allowed for a densely built neighbourhood, but green and with little traffic The house was built for a young family From the beginning, the value of the corner position of the plot was fully exploited The clients were extensively involved in the conception and building process, watching over and nourishing the tectonic quality of the design The lateral façade of the house ending the block presents an intriguing and dynamic play of lines and volume This is brought about by shifts in the orientation of the façade at each of the three floors A transformation of the geometry of the front and back façades over the length of this side is thereby created Four supporting columns in the house are freeing the lateral façade from its load bearing function, enabling this free play photo: Luuk Kramer Project is not public! m² Main designer, Sophie Valla s Marc Koehler s Floor en Barry Pepers Sophie_Valla_architects From the central station Leiden, just 5 minutes walk 11

photo: Jorissen Simonetti en photo: Jorissen Simonetti en Veldhuizerschool Kraatsweg DA Ede The design of the Veldhuizerschool adapts to its context and interacts with two monumental trees on the plot Through the use of masonry and the specific rooftop, the building fits well into his 30s environment The building is robust, playful and dynamic (thanks to the 'random' frames placed in the wall) and fits in well with the world of children The interior is centred around the multi-purpose hall and games room Workspaces are of fundamental importance for the education The passive house concept is energy efficient and and leads to a comfortable building In the it is not entirely suited to schools For the design of the Veldhuizerschool also German and Belgian knowledge and principles have been used photo: Jorissen Simonetti en Project is public! m², Interior architect, Urban planner Jorissen Simonetti architecten jsagroep Vereniging tot Oprichting en Instandhouding van Hervormde scholen Ede 12

photo: Jorissen Simonetti architecten photo: Jorissen Simonetti architecten Extension Erdee Media Group Laan van Westenenk AZ Apeldoorn The two buildings of Erdee Media Group at Laan van Apeldoorn Westenenk used to be designed by architects Jorissen Simonetti The relationship with the client is more than thirty years ago The client came to the conclusion that the building did not meet the demands that followed from the Newsroom concept After orientation to new opportunities offered in other locations they decided to adapt the oldest building to the new requirements In the spirit of stewardship, it was the wish of Erdee Media Group to continue the sustainable choice lasting shape In order to realize the newsroom concept, there was a need for an office floor with a depth of thirty meters This was achieved by expanding one of the existing wings A roof supported by wooden trusses has been created This roof has an overhang of 25 m to heat by solar radiation as much as possible photo: Jorissen Simonetti architecten Project is not public! m² Jorissen Simonetti architecten Erdee media groep jsagroep 13

photo: Heikobetram photo: Heikobetram St Joseph School Oppenheimstraat JE Leiden The school has quickly transformed from a small school to a larger school, because the number of students continues to rise The atmosphere and the appearance of the small elementary school has been carefully preserved The philosophy of the school: openness, (lots of light and space), venue (hall, wide corridors) and colour, plays an important role Unlike the existing building blocks that are very strict and straight, this is a sculptural form by the interlocking of the volumes and glass cut-outs photo: Heikobetram Project is not public! m² Jorissen Simonetti architecten Stichting Katholiek Onderwijs Leiden jsagroep 14

photo: Elmo Ferrier photo: Elmo Ferrier Ferrier Residence Marnixstraat EL Leiden This private residence is situated in de area 'Nieuw Leyden', at walking distance from Leiden's historical center The urban plan for the area is by MVRDV The plan tries to invite private commissioning Private and public interests are secured in special tenant contracts, for instance for the shells of the buildings and the collective parking garage Because each house is designed by a different architect, there is a risk of exuberance A more reserved abstract appearance was therefore chosen for the front façade of this house A limited number of precise cuts guide the composition; an entrance front, a narrow band window and a heavily recessed window pane running from top to bottom Neighbouring buildings are mostly clad in dark brick To give the house its own character and to set it off from its neighbours, a bright orange brick was chosen as the main material Project is not public! 18 photo: Jorissen Simonetti architecten photo: Jorissen Simonetti architecten Rinnebeek St Laurensweg BA De Bilt The location for the Rinnebeek is located in a residential area with mainly flats and terraced houses The adjacent primary school and the former Red Cross building (formerly a kindergarten) are the only exception Both buildings are central to their lot in a diagonal direction Moreover, the school and the former Red Cross building contrast to the surrounding neighbourhood in size and proportion The new building Rinnebeek houses various functions On the ground floor a HAT (GPs Under One Roof), the section of the Red Cross with an ambulance garage On the two floors housing four groups of seven psycho-geriatric nursing home residents The functions on the ground floor have a public character, while the upper floors are more private The new building has a central and universal place in the field The essence of the design is formed by an outer shell, which summarizes the various building functions together in one gesture photo: Jorissen Simonetti architecten Project is not public! m² Jorissen Simonetti architecten woonstichting SSW jsagroep 18
