1 Heritage & Architecture MSc1 Centraal Beheer Apeldoorn Wouter Willers Code Credits Location Excursion Costs AR1AR ECTS Apeldoorn Yes - The iconic building formerly home to the insurance company Centraal Beheer was designed by Herman Hertzberger in Hertzberger and his office are responsible for buildings such as the Ministry of SoZaWe and the Vredenburg Music Centre, he is seen as one of the most important structuralist architects of the Netherlands. The building is located near the centre of Apeldoorn. In 2013 Centraal Beheer left the building and it is set for redevelopment. Due to building s special structure and organisation it is not efficient anymore as an office for one company. It is not simply the internal organisation that is inefficient, but also its energy consumption through heating, and the lack of natural light at ground floor doesn t fulfil current expectations. Through redevelopment with the addition of public functions the building can be made suitable for future use. Part of the challenge is the research for possibilities to increase natural light and ventilation inside the building and to redevelop the facade. The two Heritage & Architecture MSc1 design projects are concerning different urban contexts, different buildings and different functions. Therefor different questions will be asked and different research will be involved. The study goal is, how by research and design you can use the building characteristics and qualities in a new situation for the future. 2 MSc1 From Prison To University - City of Haarlem Nol Hermkens Code AR1AR011 Location Haarlem The large closed complex of the Dome Prison stands on the East side of the Centre of Haarlem. As a logical consequence of its function, the complex has a rigid structure and almost no relation with its surroundings. Now the building sits empty, it has to be opened up and new connections need to be made, internally and with the surroundings, so that it will become a new vibrant neighbourhood. The proposed complex should house a wide range of programs, ranging from an educational institution, to hotel and restaurants. To accommodate this the building requires a wide variety of spaces and the complex must be adapted meet these new uses. The question of how this closed complex can be opened up and adapted to new features and current standards without losing its architectural and cultural values is the subject of this design assessment. The two Heritage & Architecture MSc1 design projects are concerning different urban contexts, different buildings and different functions therefore different questions will be asked and different research will be involved. 3 MSc 2 HAKA Rotterdam s Lidy Meijers Code AR0681 Location Rotterdam Course description: words. The context of the HAKA-building will change in the future. Merwe- Vierhaven will be a district of innovative businesses combined with residential functions. The building is vacant since many years. Recently the property has a new owner, the real estate developer Dudok. The building was connected to the former harbour. From the outside the building looks like a pearl but the inside is in need of improvement and alteration. What can be added to improve the building? Design questions will concentrate on an appropriate program in the changing surroundings, durability and materiality. The research will focus on heritage design in relation to the cultural value of this monument of the modern movement.

4 MSc 2 Religious Heritage Den Haag Amsterdam Alexander de Ridder Code AR0681 Location Den Haag- Amsterdam In the MSc2 Religious Heritage course two churches are being offered for a redesign assignment. The Pastoor van Arskerk by Aldo van Eyck in The Hague ( Loosduinen) and the Wilibrorduskerk by Joop van Stigt in Amsterdam. Dutch Architecture in the second half of the 20 century is signifi cantly infl uenced by the ideas of Aldo van Eyck. The design for a church in Loosduinen is a brilliant example of his architecture. Because of vacancy in the nearby future this church complex is in need of a redevelopment. This is the same situation for the Wilibrordus church in Amsterdam designed by Joop van Stigt. The Wilibrordus church is clearly based on the ideas of structuralism, using a geometrical composition as a core element to be used in a reiterative way. It is the design assignment of this MSc2 course to transform one of the two churches into a new design. AR ects Building History and technology AR ects Building conservation assessment

5 MSc3 The Future of Structuralism s Lidy Meijers Code Credits Location Excursion Costs AR3AR ECTS Various No N/A Structuralism represents a human, social architecture that can interact, grow and adapt. Starting in 1959, Structuralism became a very influential movement in The Netherlands. But what happened ever since? Some of the Structuralist buildings became icons, but many are facing drastic transformation or demolition. Despite the design of open structures, flexible for the future by extrapolation or adaptation, the buildings show shortcomings in indoor climate, aesthetic appearance and programmatic possibilities. What is the future value of Structuralism? Do the icons prove what is promised? Or do we need alternative strategies? Architecture office AHH (Hertzberger), developers and the Jaap Bakema Study Centre (HNI) are involved in the organisation of the studio.
