1 re:frame Design : Build : Collaborate : Network 10 teams of architects, builders and architecture students will gather together for a single day to design and build a set of micro-pavilions - small spatial objects made of recycled and reclaimed materials that together will function as a pop-up community garden. These micro-pavilions will then be moved to the streets of Chippendale as part of the BEAMS Arts Festival to temporarily occupy and re:frame public space. 1:1 is a collaboration between DARCH, SONA and the Australian Institute of Architects with support from Lochbuild. 2 1:1 is an intense collaborative design and build event organised and run by DARCH (The Sydney based network of emerging architects and graduates) in collaboration with SONA (Student Organised Network for Architecture) and in association with the Australian Institute of Architects. 1:1 is supported by the BEAMS Arts Festival and Lochbuild. 10 teams composed of Architects, Builders and Architecture students are given the challenge of designing and building a full scale response to a design brief in a single day. This Design + Build event will involve 60 participants as well as a dedicated construction team from Lochbuild. Contact: Alberto Quizon 1:1 Team Leader (DARCH) albert@chrofi.com Angus Hardwick 1:1 Team Leader (SONA) angus.hardwick@gmail.com Using recycled and reclaimed materials such as timber pallets and PVC piping each team must design and build a micro-pavilion, an inhabitable object build on a moveable timber pallet that incorporates seating and a planter box. This year marks the 3rd annual 1:1 event in NSW. Now spread nationally, the event has become an important networking platform for architects, students and builders. Previous years worked within a raw warehouse space to transform it into a pop-up bar using gathered materials. This year we re aiming to take 1:1 to the streets by challenging teams to design and build a set of moveable micro-pavilions. The 10 built responses will form a collective of objects that will re:frame the urban landscape of the street, effectively turning a barren access lane into a temporary pop-up community park as part of this year s BEAMS Arts festival in Chippendale. Following on from the festival, suitable micro-pavilions will be donated to Sustainable Chippendale who is a not-for-profit community initiative dedicated to building a local neighbourhood culture through communal gardens, composting and sustainability workshops. Sustainable Chippendale will repurpose the built objects that come out of 1:1 into street gardens for the local community.
