1. About MAAS Acknowledged internationally for the calibre of its collection, scholarship, programs and exhibitions, the three sites of the Museum of Applied Arts and Sciences are visited by over 730,000 people each year. Out of Hand: Materialising the Digital exhibition view, MAAS Common Good exhibition view, MAAS incorporates three venues: Powerhouse Museum, Ultimo Sydney Observatory, Millers Point Museums Discovery Centre, Castle Hill MAAS is placed at the intersection of arts and sciences, examining the interplay and impact this has on Australia and the world. Through this we look to engage, inspire wonder and learning in audiences. The Museum of Applied Arts and Sciences acknowledges Australia s First Nations Peoples as the Traditional Owners and Custodians of the land and gives respect to the Elders past and present and through them to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. 3 2. MAAS Annual Architecture Commission MAAS produces a cutting-edge annual Architecture Commission inviting architects and designers to transform a space into an immersive, multi-functional and unforgettable environment for our audiences. In 2019 this space is the Powerhouse Museum s forecourt on Harris Street, Ultimo. MAAS Four Periscopes, the 2018 MAAS Architecture Commission BENJAMIN HOSKING PHOTOGRAPHY BENJAMIN HOSKING PHOTOGRAPHY Four Periscopes concept sketches The project will offer emerging and established architectural and design talent the opportunity to design and present an innovative project, considering the site, location and diversity of MAAS visitors and the public space. The commission will act as a central focus of the Museum during the Sydney Design Festival, functioning as a destination for audiences, and a space that invites regular visitation. It will be installed for the period of the Festival: 1 10 March Courtesy of TRIAS PAGE 3 of 9
3. About Sydney Design Festival 1 10 March 2019 The Sydney Design Festival creates a platform for a convergence of people, ideas and activities across creative industry sectors. This annual festival provides visitors with an opportunity to unpack design in all its forms to understand and explore the processes, functions and narratives within design enterprise and to be inspired by the exhibitions and people involved in creating our futures. Curator Tour of Common Good during Sydney Design Festival The Sydney Design Festival is one of the few design festivals in the world produced and managed by a Museum and has grown to become a key event on the design industry s calendar. From its modest beginnings in 1997, Sydney Design Festival has always promoted a critical understanding of design in the way it impacts everyday life and culture. The 2019 MAAS Architecture Commission will become a drawcard of the Sydney Design Festival through activation by MAAS and related public programs. These could include: Courtesy of Re Agency MAAS Talks by the architect/designer Community led programs in the space and events within the structure Education programs PAGE 4 of 9
4. Submission Requirements In July 2018 Expressions of Interest will open for the 2019 MAAS Architecture Commission. Stage 1 applications must be ed to architecturecommission2019@maas.museum by 11.59pm on Monday 13 August REQUIREMENTS EOI Submissions for the 2019 MAAS Architecture Commission should: Not exceed 20MB in file size Be a maximum 15 pages Be in a suitable file format for viewing (i.e. PDF, JPG, Word, PowerPoint) Include design rationale, concept imagery, drawings and/or renderings of the proposed commission in the forecourt Respond to the purpose of the 2019 MAAS Architecture Commission PURPOSE Since its inception in 1997, the Sydney Design Festival has brought visibility to Sydney s design precincts, encouraging collaboration between local design communities and supporting the development of Sydney as a creative city. The ability of architecture to address complex issues, including those of environmental sustainability, access and inclusion through collective design, are at the heart of the 2019 MAAS Architecture Commission. With most Australian residents now living in urban areas, the discussion around the design of liveable cities with quality public space has never been more important. Keinton Butler, Senior Curator, MAAS The selection of the Museum s forecourt, a site which is publicly accessible, for the 2019 commission is in response to the growing significance of public space and the rise of ephemeral, socially engaged civic projects. Applicants of the 2019 MAAS Architecture Commission should consider the exploration of public space in the context of community engagement, either in the commission s design development or in its delivery. The installation should enable the general public to physically interact, engage and participate with the commission, further highlighting the importance the collective. The installation will also be activated by a public program during Sydney Design Festival. PAGE 5 of 9
5. Project scope From 18 July 2018 the Museum of Applied Arts and Sciences will invite designers and architects to participate in their 2019 MAAS Architecture Commission. Powerhouse Museum forecourt MAAS Competitors are invited to activate the Powerhouse Museum s forecourt with a temporary installation or structure that will bring the space to life. The forecourt offers a unique opportunity for high visibility through museum visitation and heavy traffic along Harris Street. The Competition will be held in two stages. Stage One is an Expression of Interest in which applicants will submit design proposals for presentation to a jury panel. A number of shortlisted submissions will be selected and a fee paid for further development. These shortlisted submissions will be further developed and refined in Stage Two. The jury will select a winner, who will be commissioned to complete the design development and delivery of the 2019 MAAS Architecture Commission MAAS ARCHITECTURE COMMISSION JURY PANEL Michael Hromek, Professional Tutor, Jumbunna Inst for Indigenous Education & Research, UTS William Smart, Director and Founder, Smart Design Studio Jennifer McMaster, Director, TRIAS * Diana Snape, Senior Design Advisor, Office of the Government Architect, NSW Kelvin Ho, Founder, Akin Creative Dr Sam Spurr, Senior Lecturer, UNSW Keinton Butler, Senior Curator, MAAS Sophie Harrington, Public Programs Manager, MAAS Peter Denham, Director, Curatorial, Collections & Exhibitions, MAAS *Winner of the 2018 MAAS Architecture Commission PAGE 6 of 9
6. Project Parameters SUMMARY The 2019 MAAS Architecture Commission will be located on the Forecourt of the Powerhouse Museum. This is a high traffic area of the Museum for both the general public and education and learning groups. Applicants will need to take into consideration that the public will touch the work and choose robust materials. MAAS will provide required support in relation to any required approvals or liaison with City of Sydney and engage Security staff who will monitor the space on regular patrols. There are a number of important limitations that applicants will need to consider: Forecourt weight load limit is 4kpA (approx. 407kg per sqm). The structure will be required to maintain 1m clear egress width from all entrances and the same clearance from the edge of the Museum s café deck. The structure is unable to pierce the membrane of the forecourt, so it must be both self supporting and self weighted. The structure will need to be weather proof. In addition: The applicant will work with the Museum s Lighting Technician to resolve lighting of the structure. In line with MAAS sustainability goals, there is a need for a long term plan and legacy for the work after the 10 March 2019 The successful applicant will be asked to document their design process, creating video and audio content which can be used across Museum channels. The winners will be invited to sit on the 2020 MAAS Architecture Commission jury panel. BUDGET A total budget for the 2019 MAAS Architecture Commission is $100,000 AUD. All costs for the project, including the design fee for the successful applicant, is to be factored into the budget. TIMELINE Stage 1 18 July 2018: EOI submissions open 13 August 2018: EOI submissions close August 2018: Submissions shortlisted for Stage 2 COPYRIGHT Where copyright is held by the Architect/Designer, they will provide free of cost necessary permissions for the use by MAAS in the exhibition, audio visual presentations, associated education and public programs and in the promotion and marketing of the work and associated activities and events, including use online. INSURANCE The Architect selected will be required to maintain all insurances required for their protection or by law in the provision of the artwork and will be required to produce satisfactory evidence to MAAS staff. The insurances may include: Public Liability Insurance (to a value of $10m per occurrence Workers Compensation/Personal Accident Coverage Professional Indemnity Insurance (to a value of $1m per case) WHS & RISK MITIGATION The selected Architect/Designer will work with MAAS staff to undertake a risk assessment and Safe Work Method Statement (SWMS) for production and installation of the architectural work.
