1 2015 STAGES 4, 5 & 6 HISTORY EXCURSIONS Discover a whole other life

2 WELCOME At Sydney Living Museums we are committed to ensuring that students who visit our museums are active participants in historical inquiry. We offer a wide range of stimulating programs that immerse students in authentic historical contexts and engage them in investigating the past. Our programs cover a range of topics, outcomes and cross-curriculum priorities from the History K 10 syllabus for the Australian Curriculum, including colonisation and the history of contact with Aboriginal people, and the experiences of convicts and free settlers. All of our programs involve students in the analysis of primary and secondary sources and the use of evidence to develop informed responses to inquiry questions. This year we offer two new Stage 5 programs to support the teaching of Topic 1b: Movement of peoples ( ) in Depth Study 1. Perish or Prosper at Elizabeth Farm explores the experiences of its first owners, pastoralists John and Elizabeth Macarthur. Elizabeth s journals and letters chronicle their experience of leaving England, journeying to the new colony, adjusting to a new home and establishing a life in the colony. The second program, Perish or Prosper at the Hyde Park Barracks, tells different migration stories, of the male convicts who were punished with transportation, and of the Irish orphan girls drawn to the colony by the promise of a better life. Once again we collaborate with Sydney Learning Adventures and The Big Dig to present Archaeology in The Rocks for students of Stage 6 Ancient History, and with the State Library of New South Wales to offer The Project, our annual seminar day for Stage 6 History Extension students. We look forward to welcoming you and your students to a Sydney Living Museums program in Mark Goggin Director The Historic Houses Trust of NSW, incorporating Sydney Living Museums, cares for significant historic places, buildings, landscapes and collections. It is a statutory authority of, and principally funded by, the New South Wales Government. The information in this brochure is correct at time of printing but may be subject to change.

Students apply the processes and methods of the historian and the archaeologist as they investigate the layered history of the Hyde Park Barracks. They research pictorial and written sources and examine archaeological artefacts to complete a historical inquiry into the lives of different groups of people who lived at the barracks. During a simulated archaeological dig, students work in small groups to excavate an artefact, then categorise, weigh, measure, sketch and interpret it, to help them better understand the different approaches to historical investigation taken by archaeologists and historians. Photo Reuben Ennor; Justice & Police Museum. Photo James Horan THE PYJAMA GIRL MURDER A Case Study This thought-provoking program is designed for students who are completing the thematic study Crime and Punishment in the Stage 5 History Elective course. Students are asked, as historians, how they would investigate the infamous murder of Linda Agostini, known as the Pyjama Girl, and what to consider when examining evidence from primary and secondary sources. They watch a 1939 film and evaluate its reliability as a source, and discuss media perspectives of the time. During a guided tour, students explore, examine and evaluate relevant artefacts and documents (including forensic evidence), learning the value of drawing evidence from a range of sources when pursuing a historical inquiry. To conclude, students take part in a re-creation of the 1944 murder trial of Antonio Agostini, and draw their own conclusions about the surprising legal outcome. 11 . These programs for Stage 5 History (NSW Syllabus for the Australian Curriculum: History K 10) incorporate outcomes from Depth Study 1: Making a Better World? Topic 1b: Movement of peoples ( ). Perish or Prosper at the Hyde Park Barracks In this program we look at the movement of people to Australia between 1820 and 1850 in a global historical context. Students analyse sources relating to the experiences of male convicts and assisted female immigrants during the first half of the 19th century to identify different perspectives and empathise with these people s actions and values. In small groups, students focus on an individual convict and consult primary sources to investigate his experiences of leaving Britain, voyaging to NSW and adjusting to a new homeland. Examining archaeological artefacts and archival records, they answer inquiry questions about the young Irish orphan girls, survivors of the Great Irish Famine, who arrived in NSW as assisted immigrants and were housed at the barracks after TOP TO BOTTOM Emigrants leaving the ship, Sydney Cove, N.S.W.
