3 Onderrigleer Nie-moedertaalstudente leer deur fliek Roepman Nie-moedertaalstudente leer deur fliek Roepman n Studentegroep wat vir die eerste keer in haar klasgee-loopbaan anders daarna uitsien, het n lektor in AFKF123 (Nie-moedertaalkommunikasie vir onderwysstudente) nuut laat dink oor hoe sy haar assessering sou aanpak. Die effek daarvan om die fliek Roepman te gebruik as onderwerp vir n formatiewe assesseringsprojek, het dr Christine du Toit, lektor in Afrikaansonderrig, verstom. Volgens dr Du Toit word die module aangebied vir studente met beperkte of geen voorkennis van Afrikaans nie. Die studente het almal Afrikaans as Eerste Addisionele Taal in matriek geslaag. Haar vraag was wát sy hierdie studente sou bied om hulle te motiveer om iets in Afrikaans te leer. Nadat sy gaan dink het en idees uit literatuur gekry het, het sy besluit om n kwartaalprojek vir die studente te gee waar hulle n koerant sou saamstel wat eksklusief gebaseer is op temas wat in die literêre werk Roepman van Jan van Tonder geïdentifiseer is. Projekwerk stimuleer kreatiewe leer Die idee agter projekwerk as metodologie in die onderrig van Afrikaans, is geskoei op die feit dat taalonderwysers kommunikatief moet onderrig en ook dat koöperatiewe leer met kleiner groepe sterk aanbeveel word (Moeller & Kunczinam, 1993:148). Projekwerk bied geleentheid om kreatief, met verskeie strategieë aktief en interaktief met studente te werk. Die studente wat AFKF123 neem, is voornemende onderwysers wie se woordeskat en interaksie met spesifiek Afrikaans verbeter moet word om hulle in staat te stel om beter met Afrikaanssprekende leerders te kan kommunikeer binne die onderwyskonteks. Dit is nie voornemende Afrikaansonderwysers nie, verduidelik dr Du Toit. Om in n addisionele taal te skryf, is een van die moeilikste vaardighede om te bemeester. Deur gebruik te maak van n langer literêre teks, kan die skryfvaardigheid verbeter word: [through] the use of a lengthier literary text that has a definite plot, well-delineated characters, is linguistically appropriate for the students, and appeals to the interest of the students, the writing process is greatly enhanced (Moeller & Kunczinam, 1993:149). Dr Du Toit se liefde vir letterkunde en die feit dat sy n voorstaander is om studente bloot te stel aan multimodale tekste ( n wye verskeidenheid van verskillende tekste, byvoorbeeld film, prosa, poësie) en transaksionele tekste (soos advertensies en koerantberigte), asook goeie Afrikaanse films, het projekwerk n goeie opsie gemaak. Metodologie van projek Die studente moes koerante bestudeer om vas te stel watter tipe inligting daarin voorkom. In Roepman word n groep Afrikaners tydens die sestigerjare onder Hendrik Verwoerd se apartheidsbewind as eerste minister van Suid-Afrika uitgebeeld. Dr Du Toit meen dat n voordeel van hierdie film is dat daar diverse en aktuele temas is wat hanteer word, byvoorbeeld selfmoord, moord, tienerswangerskap, liefde, patriargale opvoedingswyse, godsdiens en die kerk se invloed op die gemeenskap, patriotisme en selfs wonderwerke. Hierdie temas is uiters geskik om in n koerant te gebruik en ook gesprek te stimuleer, meen sy. Nadat die studente in klasverband na die fliek gekyk het, moes hulle inligting oor apartheid en die rol van Hendrik Verwoerd inwin. Volgens dr Du Toit het gesprekke gelei na hoe sy as Afrikaanssprekende dogter, haar opvoeding teenoor die hoofkarakters in die film beleef het. Die studente het ook hulle menings gelug oor die verskil tussen hedendaagse jongmense teenoor die jongmense in die film. Ouerskap en ouerbetrokkenheid by die opvoeding van hulle kinders was nog n besprekingspunt. Kliek op koerant om te besigtig

4 Formatiewe assessering Nadat die tekste vir assessering ingehandig is, kon studente die nodige veranderinge aanbring. Die foute in die tekste is ook in klasverband bespreek. Hierna is dit in n koerantformaat saamgestel. Die studente is formatief geassesseer. Die eksamen het bestaan uit n mondeling oor n keuse tussen die onderwerpe (a) die verskil tussen die sestigerjare en vandag; en (b) jou eie interpretasie en analisering van die film Roepman. Die moeite wat veral sommige studente gedoen het, met die aanbieding van hierdie mondeling, het haar verstom. Die kritiese bespreking wat hulle gelewer het, het my baie opgewonde gemaak, sê dr Du Toit. In reaksie op dié projek, het dr Ona Janse van Rensburg, Voorsitter van die Onderrigkwaliteitkomitee, gesê: Dit is so wonderlik om te sien hoe n dosent n uitdaging in haar klas gebruik om nuwe idees te ondersoek. Dit kan vir sommige dosente voel of hulle baie waag, maar ek glo dat dit n leerervaring was wat studente help vorm as opvoeders. Dr Du Toit het in n veilige konteks gesprek bewerkstellig met haar studente oor onderwerpe soos diverse agtergronde van mense, die apartheidsjare en ander aktuele temas wat in Roepman voorkom. Studente moes gaan reflekteer oor die fliek en krities nadink oor die temas. Ek glo hierdie tipe projekwerk is n goeie voorbeeld van hoe ons fakulteit diversiteit in ons samelewing op n organiese wyse in ons kurrikulum kan insluit. Dié projek was uit nood gebore, en hoewel Christine redelik benoud was oor hoe dit sou verloop, het sy aan die einde van die semester n gevoel van tevredenheid gehad. n Innoverende idee kan n groot verskil maak. Studente se terugvoer Die volgende is verkorte terugvoer van n paar studente: Through this subject I was able to revise what I had learnt in school, as well as how to analyse a film. The movie revealed aspects of racism, sexism and abuse. In viewing this it has prepared us as future teachers to deal with these sort of situations that we might come across in the profession. We discussed the effects of the issues raised not only in our assignments, but also in class. This was a tremendous help in the sense of understanding the movie. This new take on the subject was creative and challenging at the same time. It has inspired me to want to apply such techniques in my classroom one day. I learnt a bit about life during those years (1960s) and I also learnt that my Afrikaans spelling needs work. The assessment was average however it was still fair. I learnt that there wasn t much focus on diversity in the years of apartheid and everything was done to please only a limited number of people. Hierdie soort projek hou leerders op hul voete. Die projek het diversiteit op die regte wyse bespreek, geen student het gevoel daar was teen hom/haar gepraat/bespreek. 5 Grondslagfase-student innoveer met lesplanprogram Sonia Meyer was vanjaar n vierdejaar Grondslagfase-onderwysstudent. Sy het n gerekenariseerde lesplan-program ontwikkel wat studente en onderwysers moontlik kan ondersteun en lesvoorbereiding vergemaklik. Die lesplan behels n elektroniese lesbeplanning om n gepaste lesplan saam te stel. Die lesplan is belyn met die KABV (CAPS) en bevat die doelwitte, beginsels, vooruitsigte en tersaaklike inhoudsterreine naamlik kennis, vaardighede en waardes. Die elektroniese lesplan-program is spesifiek ontwikkel om verbruikersvriendelik te wees en bevat instruksies en riglyne om die gebruiker te lei in die beplanning van n les. Die lesplan fokus hoofsaaklik op Afrikaans (Afrikaans Huistaal, Lewensvaardigheid, Wiskunde en Engels Eerste Addisionele Taal vir grade R tot 3) en is gemik op die Grondslagfase, alhoewel aanpassings gemaak kan word vir uitbreidings. Sy poog om teen die einde van die jaar alle fases tot en met VOO (FET) in verskillende tale in te sluit. Daar word ook beoog om binnekort n skakel vir hulpmiddele, werkkaarte en ander addisionele bronne beskikbaar te stel. Hulpverlening en leerderondersteuning word ook aangespreek in die program. Die uiteindelike mikpunt is om n ryk elektroniese databasis te bied waar gebruikers kan aflaai, deel en aanbevelings maak. Die program werk op so n manier dat die gebruiker gedurende die les toepaslike opsies kan gebruik. Die onderwyser- en leerderaktiwiteite word in elke fase belyn met toepaslike assessering en is dus met vooraf-geselekteerde kennis, vaardighede en waardes belyn. Daar is ook n gedeelte wat voorsiening maak vir uitgebreide geleenthede soos leerderondersteuning en verrykingsgeleenthede, om die behoeftes van die leerders wat struikelblokke tot leer ervaar of dalk meer begaafd is, aan te spreek. Sonia het sedert die ontwikkeling hiervan, verskeie deelnemers (onderwysers in die praktyk en eerstetot vierdejaarstudente) genader om te toets en te help evalueer. Die meerderheid beklemtoon tydbesparing, duidelikheid en effektiwiteit ten opsigte van lesbeplanning. Sy sê Ek glo dat hierdie lesplan ook baie waardevol sal kan wees vir ander. Ek het onlangs keuring vir honneurs in Kurrikulumstudies gekry, en beoog om dus volgende jaar my studies voort te sit. Ek sal graag die kennis en vaardighede wat ek verder gaan opdoen in my studies wil gebruik om die program te verbeter en verder te ontwikkel tot die beste van my vermoë. 6 Boodskap van die Dekaan What an unbelievably busy year it has been, and as Christmas and the public and university holidays shimmer on the horizon, it is fitting that we close the year with an account of recent guests welcomed to the faculty, accolades, and achievements worthy of mention. In October and November, our students settled to study and write the year-end examinations, academics prepared for the New Year, finalising the curriculum planning for 2013, while administrators have helped ready the faculty for the up-coming restructuring process approved by the NWU Senate in mid-october. While one might have imagined that the year s frantic pace would have calmed down by now we seem to be winding up rather than winding down. The faculty ended October on a high note with the second Partnerships for Hope workshop for local Foundation Phase teachers, this time focusing on numeracy for the Foundation Phase. The workshop was hosted on October by Prof Marthie van der Walt and Prof Maarten Dolk (Utrecht University) over a period of two days and involved hands-on use of innovative techniques to teach Mathematics at this level. The workshop, which was opened by Ms Sandra Yssel on behalf of Dr Shadrack Mvula, provided interesting, innovative and new methods to challenge and enhance the quality of teaching and of learning in the classroom. Some 75 especially selected teachers from the Maquassi Hills, Matlosana and Potchefstroom areas (Kenneth Kaunda District) were housed on the campus over the weekend. I am grateful to Prof van der Walt for leading the initiative and to the team of postdoctoral students and administrators for working together to enrich the experience of participating teachers. We are hopeful that volunteer teachers present at the workshop will continue to explore some of the methodologies developed for the workshop with colleagues in the faculty as part of our ongoing commitment to teachers in the classroom. On 1 November we celebrated with a special book launch the book edited by Prof Cornelia Roux titled Safe spaces: Human rights education in diverse contexts, with contributions from colleagues nationally and internationally (VU University Amsterdam, Universiteit Ghent, University of the Free State, Wits and Fort Hare, among others). This glamorous function hosted by the Research Focus Area in the faculty was attended also by our Vice Rector of Research and Planning, Prof Amanda Lourens. My special thanks to the team of administrators who made this evening memorable for us and our guests: Ms Saartjie Venter, Ms Monica Moruri and Mr Jandré van der Walt. Also in early November (2 6) we welcomed a group of eight, mostly Finnish academics who participated, under the auspices of Prof Seugnet Blignaut, in a garage computing project network meeting. Among this group was Prof Erkki Sutinen (University of East Finland), extraordinary professor in the School of Continuing Teacher Education, who spent time with academics and students in the school and faculty. Also visiting the faculty as part of the project meeting were colleagues from Tanzania (Profs Moya Musa and Joseph Bada) and Vietnam (Prof Pham Cong Thien). More information is provided in the newsletter. On 5 November, we received news of the promotion of colleagues to the ranks of lecturer, senior lecturer, associate professor (Prof Marthie van der Walt) and full professor (Prof JP Rossouw). It is very gratifying to note that all those colleagues put forward by the faculty were successful in their applications and I am grateful to our directors for the careful nurturing and research support provided to enable these colleagues to attain these special levels of recognition. On 6 November, I attended the function hosted by our rector, Prof Herman van Schalkwyk, to honour the retirement of university colleagues from among our support services and academic unit. Worthy of special mention here is Ms Ester Venter, who retires as subject librarian in education with a long history of excellent service in the Faculty of Education Sciences, as well as in the Potchefstroom College of Education since 1985 (also read Ester s goodbye later in this newsletter). On 7 November, we took especial delight in honouring three of our students who represented South Africa at the 2012 London Olympic Games at a special ceremony organised by Prof Barry

7 Richter, Director of the School for Curriculum-based Studies. On this occasion, I was delighted to present, on behalf of the faculty, a token of recognition to Ms Sulette Damons (SA Women s Hockey Team and first-year B.Ed. student), Mr André Olivier (SA Men s Athletics Team and B.Ed.Hons. student), and Ms Sunette Viljoen (SA Women s Javelin athlete with a B.Ed.Hons. degree). It is inspiring to our colleagues in the faculty and to the students who are peers of these sportsmen and women to know that champions choose education and that education makes for the development of champions. I hope that the recognition will inspire these teachers (or teachers in the making) to inspire new generations of leaders, whether in sport or the academy. A Faculty of Education Sciences delegation (Profs Hannes van der Walt, Ferdinand Potgieter and Charl Wolhuter) visited De Driestar (the Netherlands) between 5 and 10 November to help set up the first NWU-Driestar Teaching and Teaching Best Practice Colloquium, which will be hosted by De Driestar towards June On 12 November, the faculty participated in the first Goodwill Cup Golf Competition arranged between the Faculty of Natural Sciences and us. Education fielded a team of experienced and enthusiastic colleagues under the leadership of Mr Joop Oosthuizen. Readers may remember that in early 2012 the faculty lifted the trophy from the Faculty of Natural Sciences at the annual Willem Scott memorial golf day; the Goodwill Cup was in some ways a re-match to confirm the obvious expertise possessed by the Faculty of Education Sciences! On 13 November, we were delighted to be well represented at the annual ceremony for the Rapport Top Lecturer Award in which three colleagues, Dr Maryna Reyneke (subject group chair for English Education), Mr Rudi van de Venter (lecturer in Maths Education), and Ms Anitia Lubbe (lecturer in Life Sciences), all from the School for Curriculumbased Studies, were nominated by students in our initial teacher programmes. I conclude this message by commending our students, colleagues and administrators efforts in 2012 to you, knowing that all have put shoulders to the wheels of change and development in transforming education, and certain that our best efforts more than meet most expectations. 9 Konferensies/colloquia Educational design research workshop Prof Marthie van der Walt, project leader of the SANPAD Mathematics project, initiated a workshop by Prof Maarten Dolk (Freudenthal Institute, Utrecht University, Netherlands partner in the project) on educational design research or EDR. Eighteen colleagues and students attended the well-organised informative one-day workshop. Maarten focused on EDR as a method by which to change or improve education, as well as to understand innovation and ways to implement innovation, and referred to authors such as Gravemeier (2004), and Gravemeier and Cobb (2006). The cyclical process of knowledge, design, experiment and retrospective analysis was explained by using examples. An important question that came up for discussion was: why design research? SANPAD-HREiD workshop The HREiD group held its second annual SANPAD workshop from 1 to 2 November. We were honoured with the presence of Dr Shernice Soobramoney, the former SANPAD project manager. Many important issues were discussed, including how far we have come, where we are at present, and where this research group is heading. Data and publications were also examined. 10 Akademiese besoekers vanaf ander universiteite Computing project By Prof Seugnet Blignaut The University of Eastern Finland, the University of Helsinki (Finland), Makerere University (Uganda), Nong Lam University (Vietnam), Purbanchal University (Nepal), Tumaini University (Tanzania), Maseno University (Kenya), and the North-West University applied and obtained funding of over two years ( ) from the Centre for International Mobility in Finland. This funding will enable eight student exchanges, six teacher exchanges, six exchanges between partners, a network meeting, and the compilation of an intensive course during 2013 in Uganda. The metaphor of garage computing refers to IT companies moving back from expensive ivory tower office blocks to home garages to regroup and become more innovative in the current market. This metaphor also applies directly to the dire education situation in South Africa. Prof Seugnet Blignaut has been involved in this project for the past ten years. Prof Erkki Sutinen, the extraordinary professor at the School of Continuing Teacher Education, also joined the CIMO meeting. He has now completed a three-year contract as extraordinary professor and his inputs have been extremely innovative, interesting and valuable. To date, four members of the Faculty of Education Sciences have gained from the exchange possibilities offered by this programme. Ester Venter groet In 1985 het ek as bibliotekaresse in die ENANgebou (Eenmaal- n-norrie-altyd- n-norrie-gebou), nou die C1, begin werk en mens kan skaars glo dat al drie die verdiepings op daardie stadium die POK-biblioteek was. Voordat die boonste verdieping in 2001 aangebou is, het die plat dak van die biblioteek altyd met reëntye gelek en dan het ons plante onder die lekke geplaas en dit ons reënwoud genoem. Een van die interessante mense op my pad was ou Mevrou Venter van die biblioteek in die tagtigerjare. Haar man was prof. Lang Jan Venter van Engels en sy het nogal baie Engelse storieboeke vir die biblioteek aangekoop, veral SF waarvoor sy n passie gehad het wat ek deel. Ek onthou ook nog die dae toe die damestudente van die koshuise lyste moes invul met inteken- en uittekentye as hulle in die aande die biblioteek besoek het. Wys mens net hoe tye verander en studente met die jare al meer vryhede verkry het. Die biblioteek het deur die jare talle benamings gehad: POK-biblioteek, Onderwysmediasentrum en nou Opvoedingswetenskappe-biblioteek. Die Fakulteit Opvoedingswetenskappe het n groot rol gespeel in my ontwikkeling as hoofbibliotekaris van die takbiblioteek en ek is baie trots daarop. Iemand het eendag vir my gesê: jy moet wees waar jy is. Ek sien uit na die nuwe fase in my lewe waar ek ook ten volle sal wees waar ek op daardie oomblik is en waar ek na die beste van my vermoë sal doen wat my hand vind om te doen. André Olivier, n honneursstudent het gekwalifiseer vir die halfeindronde van die 800m en het tydens die Europese atletiekseisoen n skitterende persoonlike beste tyd van 1:44:29 behaal n tyd wat nog net deur n handjievol 800m-atlete in die wêreld behaal kon word. Olimpiese Spele deelgeneem het onderwysstudente is, wat in die toekoms as inspirerende rolmodelle vir jong Suid-Afrikaners sal optree. Die geleentheid is ook bygewoon deur die afrigters van die presterende sportlui en mnr James Stoffberg, die Direkteur van NWU- Puksport wat spesifiek melding gemaak het van sy waardering vir die besondere ondersteuning wat die Fakulteit Opvoedingswetenskappe verleen aan studente wat op n hoë vlak in verskillende sportsoorte deelneem. Mnr Jean van der Merwe Me Stephanie Smit Kultuur SJGD Sulette Damons, n tweedejaar-onderwysstudent het baie goed gevaar deur Suid- Afrika tydens die Olimpiese Spele op die hokkieveld te verteenwoordig. Die kommentators het deurgaans baie positiewe kommentaar oor haar spel gelewer en die wyse waarop sy seker doele van die opponente afgeweer het. Sy het in die spiesgooi n vierde plek behaal en het, net soos André Olivier, daarin geslaag om vanjaar haar persoonlike beste afstand op te skuif na n indrukwekkende 69.35m. Die Dekaan van die Fakulteit Opvoedingswetenskappe het die oorhandigings behartig en hy was baie beïndruk met die feit dat drie van die vier NWU-Pukke wat aan die André Olivier, Olimpiese 800m-atleet, saam met prof Robert Balfour. 16 Third-year art exhibition: Back to the future: Looking at the past through the lenses of the future The third-year art students are currently participating in an art exhibition being held at the Kunsvlyt Building (C7). The work on display not only reflects their commitment to the demanding three-year arts course, but also showcases their creative input in both practical and theoretical work. The practical work alternates between different genres in two and three dimensions, ranging from portrait painting, out-of-the-box shoes, pottery masks, and imaginative interpretations of surrealism in watercolour, pen and ink. It is, however, the art historical timeline of all the different periods and styles that catches the viewers attention. Four different time zones portray the art of the Classical, Middle Ages, Renaissance and Modern period and trace the development of humankind through its art historical endeavours: architecture, sculpture, painting and artefacts. The students have taken timeline interpretations to a new level; many famous artists, for example the works of Da Vinci, Van Gogh, Picasso and Stern are on display together with their spatial contexts. This assemblage of images seems to be easier to read and reflects the tendency towards a more visually orientated community. One student remarked: With these pictures, history becomes more alive and we start to understand how everything fits together when we look at the changing imagery the plan is to share and distribute all these pictures amongst us so that our learners can one day also build up their own visual timeline in Visual and Cultural Studies. At the opening of the exhibition, the third-year art students were presented with a colour signalling their special creative abilities. What is important at university level is the ability to be free to experiment and explore, to know how far you can take your creativity, remarked Merna Meyer, art lecturer. Sometimes the journey can be into the future and back again. We will be following their creative timeline with interest. Turning Technologies het n elektroniese apparaatjie ontwikkel, bekend as die clicker, en formeel bekend as n response card. Na aanleiding van n multikeusevraag op n Powerpoint-projeksie, stuur elke deelnemer in n lokaal met n radiosein sy keuse na die sentrale rekenaar, wat die sein via n klein USB-modem registreer. Dit word onmiddellik omgeskakel in n kleurvolle grafiek op die skerm, en elkeen kan sien wat almal gekies het. Terselfdertyd word die data vraag vir vraag as n Excel-blad gestoor vir latere verwerking. Alles word deur die aanbieder beheer met n afstandskontrole wat ook seine na die modem stuur. Die moontlike gebruike van so n stel clickers is so wyd as wat jou verbeelding kan loop. Navorsing, meningspeilings, toets skryf soos met efundi. In die klas kan jy onmiddellik bepaal wat die studente uit pas afgehandelde werk geleer het. As jy vooraf op n naamlys n clicker se unieke nommer aan n spesifieke individu koppel, kan jy later bepaal watter individu spesiale hulp nodig het. Die meer gevorderde clicker maak ook voorsiening vir teksboodskappe soortgelyk aan n SMS, iets waarvan kwalitatiewe navorsers baie sal hou. Woorde en sinne word net soos die numeriese waardes geregistreer as data; en as jy saam met die stel ook n aantal lisensies koop, kan studente ook met hul selfone, in plaas van clickers, hulle opinies lug of antwoorde stuur. BTD-werwing Die vakgroep Opleiding en Ontwikkeling is verantwoordelik vir hulle eie bemarking van die BTD-graad en het van 9 tot 11 Oktober aan The Star HRD Expo 2012 deelgeneem n jaarlikse opleidings- en ontwikkelingsekspo wat deur die koerant The Star aangebied word. Die ekspo was by die Sandton-konferensiesentrum gehou en het op die opleiding en ontwikkeling van opleiers gefokus. Daar was 75 uitstallers en die ekspo is deur sowat mense oor die drie dae besoek. Tydens die ekspo, het drs. Meyer en Van der Merwe inligtingspakkette oor die BTD-graadkursus (Mensehulpbronontwikkeling) aan meer as 350 mense uitgedeel. Daar was ook geleentheid om vrae van afgevaardigdes te beantwoord. Die terugvoer van hierdie persone oor ons uitstalling was baie positief gewees en tot dusver was die navrae vir aansoeke na afloop van die ekspo ook oorweldigend. Die vakgroep Opleiding en Ontwikkeling wil Prof Richter bedank vir sy besoek aan hulle stalletjie tydens die ekspo. Verder wil hulle ook die dekaan bedank vir sy visie en ondersteuning van die vakgroep. 18 Ingenieurstoepassings in die opleiding van onderwysers in tegniese vakke Gedurende die skoolvakansie Junie 2012 was die vakgroep VOO Tegnologie by die opleiding van Tegnologie-onderwysers van die Noordwes Onderwysdepartement betrokke. Die fokus van die opleiding het gesentreer rondom die implementering van die 2012 CAPS-vereistes in die VOO-fase by sekondêre skole wat hierdie tegniese studierigting aanbied. Ongeveer 100 onderwysers vanaf 20 skole het die opleiding bygewoon. Na afloop van die opleiding was beide die onderwysers en dosente beïndruk met die gehalte en sukses van die opleiding. Die opleiding het gefokus op die verskillende VOO Tegnologie-spesialiseringsrigtings, naamlik Elektriese, Meganiese en Siviele Tegnologie, asook Ingenieursgrafika en -ontwerp (IGO Tegniese Tekene). Onderwysers het n keuse gehad om in slegs een vakspesialiteit te spesialiseer. In Meganiese Tegnologie is daar hoofsaaklik op die Pas- en Draaiwerk, en Motorwerktuigkunderigtings gefokus. Opleiding het veral klem gelê op die toepassing van die teorie binne die praktikum. In Pas- en Draaiwerk is vaardighede op die draaibank en freesmasjien ingeoefen deur met groot akkuraatheid n hamertjie te masjineer. Voordat die objek vervaardig kon word, is die teoretiese berekeninge aan die kandidate verduidelik waar van hulle verwag was om hoeke uit te werk, boor- en toevoerspoed te bereken, asook wiskundige toepassings van trigonometrie te doen. Pas- en Draai-opleidingsgroep. Draaiwerk op die draaibank. Sny van n heliese rat op die freesmasjien. In die motorafdeling het die onderwysers weer die geleentheid gekry om ondermeer enjins te demonteer, foutopsporing te doen, en presisiemeetinstrumente te gebruik. Elektriese Tegnologie is verdeel in Elektronika en Elektrisiënswerk. Hier is veral op huisbedrading, elektriese motors en digitale programmering van elektriese sisteme gefokus. Die teoretiese beginsels en berekeninge is aan die kandidate verduidelik voordat enige praktikum aangepak is. Die kennisareas wat hanteer is, was: (a) die gebruik van rekenaarbeginsels om elektriese stelsels te programmeer; (b) geoutomatiseerde produksie in fabrieke; en (c) kontrolestelsels tydens die funksionering van meganiese apparaat.

19 Siviele Tegnologie het naas die teoretiese opleiding in sterkte- en struktuurleer, ook op die veilige gebruik van hand- en masjiengereedskap klem gelê. Onderwysers se kennis en vaardighede is ook ten opsigte van die korrekte gebruik van die eenvlakwaterpas (dumpy level) opgeskerp. Elektriese Tegnologie: Bedrading. Tydens die Ingenieursgrafika en -Ontwerp (IGO)-kursus is onderwysers touwys gemaak in die gebruik van die CAD-program (computeraided design). As vertrekpunt is daar eers volgens die tradisionele metode met die potlood, passer en liniaal geteken. Belangrike beginsels wat tussen die ou en nuwe metode van teken geld, is eers vasgelê. Mobility and the environment Mobility and the Environment, launched by the School for Curriculum-based Studies and sponsored by the Vlaamse Stichting Verkeerskunde, is a programme that simultaneously addresses issues of safety, the environment, health and economics, by considering the expectations of transportation and the effect of transportation decisions on the environment. This programme aims to empower learners to make safe choices in a world where motor vehicle accidents cause the death of many people. Educating learners about mobility instills healthy habits that make it possible for learners to protect the well-being of their bodies by teaching them the risks of physical inactivity and the effect of transport mode choices on the environment. The programme also aims to identify safe routes to school, thereby ensuring that options like walking or using a bicycle remain in use. Putting mobility education into practice poses a challenge for schools in regards to employing local initiatives in which schools could search for unique ways in their school s context to promote new travel and more sustainable behaviour among teachers and learners. Local partners in this effort may include traffic officers from the municipality, bus companies, and the provincial education department. Teachers of schools taking part in the programme have already identified some benefits for education. The learners with bicycles arrive at school on time and ready to learn. Better mobility by means of bicycles provided by this project gives learners a sense of independence that improves their selfesteem.

20 Safe spaces: Human rights education in diverse contexts Dr Shernice Soobramoney, SANPAD project manager This book examines the crucial issues affecting human rights education in contexts of culture, religious and societal diversity. It exhibits an impressive scholarly achievement, capturing and combining the insights of both established academics and emerging researchers. Each author succeeds in distilling the knowledge of his or her particular fields of interest, as well as conveying the essence of his or her intuitive understanding and the richness of the context. The publication is strengthened by allowing international reviewers the opportunity of engaging with the contributors in the introduction and conclusion an innovative departure from co ventional formats and one that provides a global perspective to the readers. This book considers a variety of connected content and methodological issues in three major sections: Philosophical and policy perspectives, Gender discourses: Diverse perspectives, and Discourses on narratives as safe spaces. The focus of the various chapters succeeds in establishing both a foundation and platform for dialogue surrounding human rights and human rights education in modern policy and governance. Aptly titled Safe spaces, the book offers in-depth and credible ( safe ) nuances ( spaces ) in terms of the somewhat reified concept of human rights, at a time when human rights remains a highly topical and contested international issue. As such, the book imparts an immense scope of theoretical and empirical perspectives, reflected by the distinguished intellectuals who navigate the terrain of their respective disciplines with profound erudition. 21 Erkenningsgeleentheid vir navorsers, en boekbekendstelling Op 1 November is n heerlike kaas-en-wyn-geselligheid aangebied, waartydens die fakulteit se navorsers bedank is vir hul harde werk en publikasies van die afgelope jaar. 22 Gholfspelers beïndruk met Goodwill Cup Die Goodwill Cup is die gesamentlike idee van prof. Kobus Pienaar van die Fakulteit Natuurwetenskappe en prof. Barry Richter van Opvoedingswetenskappe om welwillendheid en samewerking tussen die twee betrokke fakulteite se personeel te bevorder. Die gholfkompetisie is geskoei op die bekende Ryder Cup, wat elke twee jaar tussen Europa en Amerika gespeel word. Die groot dag het plaasgevind op 12 November by n baie nat en bewolkte Potchefstroom-buiteklub. Die opgewonde spanning was duidelik sigbaar aan die begin van die kompetisie, aangesien die twee fakulteite vroeër die jaar ook in n stryd gewikkel was vir die Willem Scott-trofee vir die beste fakulteit, waar Opvoedingswetenskappe met die eer weggestap het. Hierdie keer was die stryd net so gelykop, met die laaste 4-bal wat die uitslag 7-5 in die guns van Opvoedingswetenskappe laat swaai het. Die spel was in n wonderlike gees gespeel, en n uitstekende tradisie tussen die twee fakulteite is begin. Mag die Goodwill Cup net van krag tot krag gaan. Opregte dank aan prof Balfour vir sy voorspoedige wense en ondersteuning van die span. 23 Teachers Month International Teachers Day was celebrated on 5 October, but the faculty extended its celebrations into a Teachers Month. On 15 October, a very inspiring teacher, entrepreneur and winner of the Shoprite Checkers Women of the Year Award in the educators category, Ms Marisa van der Merwe, visited the faculty by invitation of the dean. She gave staff an overview of her MiniChess outreach programme and Moves for Life national programme, which uses chess as a means of helping Grades R to 3 pupils cope with mathematics and problem-solving, while teaching them life skills. Later that evening she was the guest speaker at the Education Prestige Awards dinner, where students achievements were recognised. Staff from the SE arrived with pizzas and other refreshments to show their appreciation. Seiphemelo High School has a long-standing relationship with the faculty and many of its staff and alumni are also alumni of the NWU. Over the years, Seiphemelo has achieved excellent academic, arts and culture, as well as sports results owing to the dedication and leadership of its teachers. It was an enriching experience to see how teachers succeed in inspiring and motivating learners despite difficult circumstances.
