6 School leadership symposium national school leadership symposium was organised A and hosted by the Faculty of Education Sciences and the Unit for Open Distance Learning from 10 to 11 October The purpose of the symposium was to deliberate collectively with colleagues from higher education institutions (HEIs) about the offering of school leadership programmes. The focus of the symposium was on the development of the Advanced Diploma, Postgraduate Diploma and BEdHons programmes for school leadership. Twenty-eight academics from eight universities, as well as representatives from the Department of Basic Education (DBE) and the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET), attended the symposium. The professional development of school leaders is a national priority and HEIs need to respond to this particular need and this was the purpose of the symposium: to provide a platform for colleagues in school leadership to engage with and share some of the uncertainties and challenges. Prof Kobus Mentz gave the welcoming address on behalf of the Faculty and Dr Herman van Vuuren provided the background to the professional development of school leaders in South Africa. The first keynote speaker was Mr Neil Makhaga from the DHET, who explained the revised Higher Education Qualifications Sub-Framework. One of the primary points of interest was that the Advanced Certificate is also available as a qualification for the professional development of school leaders. It is now possible for universities to offer professional school leadership programmes from certificate to postgraduate level. This issue was discussed intensively among colleagues because of related matters, such as capacity and cost-effectiveness. The second keynote speaker was Mr James Ndlebe from the DBE. He assured the attendees that it is still the intention of the DBE to develop and endorse a national qualification as an entry qualification for principalship in South Africa and that the National Management and Leadership Committee will be re-convened to take this initiative forward. An important presentation was given by Mr Jerry van Niekerk from Old Mutual, who is involved in an education leadership development project in the country. He discussed the progress of the project and the role of the private sector in this regard. An outstanding feature of the symposium was the presentation by Ms Messina Mokgope, the National Teaching Award winner for primary school leadership in the country and a former student of our school leadership programme. She had the audience at her feet with her presentation on stories from her practical experience at school. The prestige lecture by Prof Jan Heystek was also part of the symposium programme and was well received by all the attendees. The second day of the symposium was used for plenary sessions to discuss a variety of matters related to HEIs in depth and breadth. The symposium was a huge success and all praised the initiative and hospitality of the Faculty of Education Sciences and the Unit for Open Distance Learning. We are grateful to Dr Van Vuuren and Dr Molly van Niekerk for their role in organising this symposium. Dr Herman Van Vuuren presenting at the symposium.

Thirty-fifth ASRSA conference The Association for the Study of Religion in Southern Africa (ASRSA) comprises a multidisciplinary group of scholars from South Africa and other African countries. The University of the Free State (UFS) hosted the 35th conference in August this year. The conference, themed Emerging trends and trajectories in the study of religion, entailed a presidential address, four keynote speakers, a roundtable discussion, a conference workshop, a business meeting, a society dinner and 20 conference paper presentations. Two Faculty members were present, Prof Cornelia Roux and Dr Shan Simmonds. Prof Roux was one of the keynote speakers and presented a stimulating paper that posed the question Can religion in education develop to the next level to become religion and education?. The paper initiated an interactive dialogue among the conference members engaged in the state of the religion education curriculum in South Africa. Dr Simmonds presented a paper titled Doing research in religion education: Emerging trends for gender research perspectives. In this paper, she shared part of her PhD empirical research and advocated for an intersectionality approach towards religion education and gender research. Prof Cornelia Roux (NWU), Dr Shan Simmonds (NWU) and Prof Jannie Smit (President of ASRSA). The Women s Memorial Garden was unveiled at the UFS Bloemfontein Campus on National Women s Day, 9 August The Memorial Garden celebrates the historic struggle and sacrifices of all South African women, especially those who fought against racism and sexism. The design of the memorial, with a living wild fig tree at its centre, symbolises real understanding, knowledge and faith. These were identified as the characteristics that the UFS believes all Kovsies women should pursue to ensure a sustainable and prosperous future for the UFS.

FIRST BIENNIAL INTERNATIONAL TEACHING-LEARNING COLLOQUIUM (Driestar Educatief, Gouda, Netherlands) A proud history of collegial cooperation in the field of teaching and learning that dates back to the 1970 s exists between the Faculty and Driestar Educatief in the Netherlands. The first biennial teaching-learning colloquium between the two institutions which took place in Gouda from 25 to 27 September 2013, took this collaboration to another level and was a huge success. The aim of the colloquium was to bring together the insights and expertise of teaching and learning of both institutes. The theme of this year s colloquium was: Preparing Education Students For Life Via The Curriculum. Fifteen colleagues from the three campuses of North-West University travelled to Gouda, where they joined up with 27 colleagues from Driestar Educatief for the duration of the colloquium. Over the three days, a total of 29 papers were read and the colloquium was kicked off by Prof Ferdinand Potgieter s keynote lecture The spirituality of teaching and learning. An analysis of the papers that were read revealed three distinct themes, as well as three strategically relevant research trends: Fifteen colleagues from the three campuses of North-West University travelled to Gouda, where they joined up with 27 colleagues from Driestar Educatief for the first biennial teaching-learning colloquium. Themes: Spirituality Methods of and for teacher training/education Research into learners/classrooms Research trends: Contextualisation Internationalisation Methodology The colloquium was inspiring and the generosity, collegiality, and professionalism of the Driestar Educatief staff were highly appreciated.

Third-year History students present paper at South African Society for History Teaching conference Dr Pieter Warnich and two of his third-year History students, Mss Jeanine Cloete and Claire Gordon, presented a fascinating paper at the South African Society for History Teaching conference in Pietermaritzburg on the use of cellphones in the history classroom. This was a first-time experience for them and exposed them to lecturers from various universities, teachers from across the country, and master s students. They also learnt a great deal about the importance of history in the classroom, and it is hoped the experience will encourage their participation in future congresses. 10 Visit to University of Minnesota and signing of memorandum of understanding The relationship with the University of Minnesota started in 2009 with Profs Aaron Doering and Charles Muller presenting a learning technologies workshop at NWU s Potchefstroom Campus titled Technology in education: Transforming the perspective. Dr Christo van der Westhuizen visited the Learning Technologies Media Lab (LTML) of the Department of Curriculum and Instruction at the College of Education and Human Development during his sabbatical in In the same year, the internationally well-known Johnson brothers, Roger and David, were invited to our campus by Prof Elsa Mentz to present a workshop on co-operative learning. From the above-mentioned interactions, a need developed for closer collaboration between the two institutions. Therefore, in September this year, Prof Barry Richter and Dr Van der Westhuizen visited the University of Minnesota for further discussions and the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU). The MoU was signed in the office of the Dean of the College of Education and Human Development, Prof Jean K. Quam. Also present were Prof Aaron Doering, Codirector of the LTML; Dr Christopher Johnstone, Director of International Initiatives and Relations; Prof Barry Richter, Director of the School of Natural Sciences and Technology for Education, NWU; and Dr Christo van der Westhuizen, NWU. Delegates from the University of Minnesota and NWU (Potchefstroom Campus) in discussions regarding the MoU between the two institutions. Clockwise from left: Prof Jean Quam (Dean), Prof Aaron Doering, Dr Christo van der Westhuizen, Prof Barry Richter and Dr Chris Johnstone.

In broad, the MoU is committed to the following (the institutions shall endeavour to develop plans that will include the following areas of cooperation): exchange of faculty members for agreed upon periods of time; organisation of possible joint activities, including the exchange of research and technical staff members; organisation of joint conferences or symposia; exchange of publications; exchange of students. During the first three years of this MoU, faculty and staff members from the University of Minnesota s LTML and NWU s Faculty of Education will explore opportunities in collaborative research around technology-enhanced learning. Specifically, the collaboration will facilitate new activities designed to support the learning of the NWU s contact and 10,000+ distance education students. The LTML and NWU will utilise visiting faculty arrangements to support collaborative work. All activities that require resource allocation will be agreed upon in advance and in writing by principal faculty members.

Spesiale lesings of seminare Prof Lesley Wood delivers inaugural lecture titled Action research for the 21st century: Navigating new educational pathways Prof Wood delivered her inaugural lecture on 29 August. Stemming from the ancient Roman tradition of augury, in which a public official is deemed worthy of office, the ceremony indicates the official recognition of the person as a full professor within the academy. In her address, Prof Wood professed her ideas on research, as follows: for the event by the Dean s dream team. The event was attended by Prof Wood s family, friends, colleagues and former colleagues from as far afield as Port Elizabeth. Prof Wood would like to thank the Dean s Office and her colleagues for making this such a memorable event. Twenty years into democracy in South Africa, poverty and disease continue to limit the life prospects of the majority of its people. As researchers in higher education, we have an opportunity, not to mention moral obligation, to direct our research towards finding ways to ensure that the expected fruits of democracy can be more evenly dispersed throughout society. Yet, in general, the knowledge produced by the academy has had little positive impact on the quality of life of those on whom we conduct our research. I argue for the need to adopt paradigms and methodologies that are more inclusive and participatory and challenge entrenched views that research is the prerogative of the academy. In particular, I propose that an action research paradigm may offer suitable ways to navigate new educational pathways suited to improving and sustaining social life in the 21st century. Such an approach will help to ensure that academic research remains relevant in today s complex and fast-changing world. After the official ceremony, an elegant dinner was held on the roof of the Joon van Rooy building, which had been magically transformed into a purple and silver wonderland Profs Amanda Lourens, Lesley Wood and Robert Balfour.

Prestige lesing: Prof Jan Heystek Prof Jan Heystek. Op 10 Oktober het prof Jan Heystek n prestige lesing in die Fakulteit gelewer, getitel Trust and motivation as determinants for improved and sustainable performance in education.

Edu-HRight hosts the first Speak Out!/Praat Uit! seminar By Jacques Rothman The Faculty of Education Sciences Edu-HRight research unit hosted the first in a series of Speak Out!/Praat Uit! seminars on 2 October on the Potchefstroom Campus. Through these seminars, initiated by the Dean of the Faculty of Education Sciences, Prof Robert Balfour, the Edu-HRight team seeks to establish a context in which a much-needed debate on the seemingly contested and controversial nature of diversity in contemporary South African society can take place. As a newly established interdisciplinary research unit, spearheaded by Prof Cornelia Roux, Edu-HRight strives to provide this platform for discourse on the importance of recognising and protecting the human rights of diverse social beings, including racial, ethnic and sexual minorities, among others. The subtheme of the evening was Representation of sexualities in academic literature, religion and spirituality. We were fortunate to host two language specialists as speakers. They were Prof Cheryl Stobie, an associate professor of English from the University of KwaZulu-Natal, and Prof Andries Visagie, from the Department of Afrikaans at the University of Pretoria. Prof Stobie has published widely on post-colonialism, gender, sexuality, religion and spirituality, among other topics. In addition to this, she has authored work on the representation of bisexuality in post-apartheid novels. She was the principal investigator in a research project funded by the National Research Foundation (NRF) on the topic of the representation of spirituality and sexuality in texts. Her paper for Speak Out!, titled The devil slapped on the genitals: Religion and spirituality in queer South Africans lives, centred on the creation of a link, or as she termed it conversation, between two intimate domains of life that act as powerful determinants of identity: spirituality and sexuality. Her presentation provided an in-depth account of various South African books in which the authors chronicle the noted link and/or disjuncture between spirituality/religion and homosexuality. Prof Visagie s doctoral thesis analysed male subjectivity in Afrikaans fiction and several of his publications are devoted to gender and sexuality in Afrikaans and Dutch literature. Autobiography as genre and human animal relations in literature are additional interests. He has a C1 rating from the NRF and has widely attended international conferences, published articles in national and international accredited journals, and contributed chapters to national and international book publications. He is also co-editor of a book titled Antjie Krog: An ethics of body and otherness, due for publication by the University of KwaZulu-Natal Press by the end of His paper at the seminar, titled Diere en gender in PHILIDA deur André P. Brink: Skandalige interseksionaliteit?, complemented that of Prof Stobie in that he emphasised the importance of intersectionality in relation to gender and sexual orientation in academic research. He did this through his judicious use of writer André P. Brink s novel Philida (2012), in which Brink controversially likened two of his critics, Joan Hambidge and Zelda Jongbloed, to a sow and a trassie hen,

Grondslagfase-diensleerfunksie respectively. In doing this, Prof Visagie argued that Brink s work underscores a discursive violence perpetuated against both women and animals, and in so doing forces the reader to consider the inherent dualism he/she faces in obtaining and retaining a sense of freedom as a gendered or sexual being. Thirty guests attended the event. They included undergraduate and postgraduate NWU students from various faculties, as well as lecturers, researchers and members of Edu-HRight. An insightful Q & A session followed each paper, which encouraged critical debate and interrogation of the noted and more subtle themes expressed in the work of the two presenters. Seen as providing the initial platform for a series of seminars to follow, Dr Shan Simmonds gave the attendees an overview of the second in this series of seminars on the representation of sexualities, which will take place in early This seminar will again convene specialists in the field of gender, sexuality and queer studies, with a particular emphasis on the lived experiences of NWU staff. Information on this seminar will be communicated during January Die vierdejaar Grondslagfase-studente doen jaarliks diensleer in die modules Pre-primêre Skool Opvoedkunde (PPSE 411 en 422).

Akademiese besoekers vanaf ander universiteite Visit from Profs Ortrun Zuber-Skerritt and Richard Teare Prof Lesley Wood This visit was hosted by the COMBER research project, Prof Wood s NRF-funded community engagement project. Prof Zuber-Skerritt is one of the international collaborators on this project. From September, there were a variety of activities and events, all of which were aimed at increasing knowledge and dialogue around community-based educational research. Profs Wood and Zuber-Skerritt have published three articles together this year, based on their collaboration on this project. On 17 September, Prof Zuber-Skerritt hosted a workshop on participatory action learning and action research, which was attended by fourteen staff members and two doctoral candidates. It was a very interactive and stimulating workshop judging from the evaluation comments: Thank you I appreciate the presenter s experience it was encouraging and motivating. I need to continue with this method. Thank you for the interactive process. It really helps to concretise ideas and does not confuse me the way that reading through a methodology textbook does. On 18 September, Profs Teare and Zuber-Skerritt gave a lecture to launch their new book Lifelong action learning for community development. Prof Ortrun Zuber-Skerritt, co-author, Prof Lesley Wood; research professor, NWU; Mr Bruce Damons, school principal and PhD candidate; and Prof Richard Teare, co-author. Prof Teare explained the concept of the Global University for Lifelong Learning (GULL), of which he is president. The aim is to take the university to the people who would never normally be able to access further education. GULL collaborates with existing NGOs, faith-based organisations and other institutions and organisations to mobilise

community members to improve their own circumstances. The curriculum is tailor-made for each organisation, with the emphasis as much on personal development as on skills development. This approach has been instigated in more than 45 countries worldwide, and has recently been introduced at the University of Pretoria as a form of service learning for Human Movement Science students. For more information on this innovative concept, visit On 19 September, the NRF project hosted a seminar, attended by 34 academics from various institutions. The theme was Descending from the ivory tower: Community engagement for mutual learning. Prof Gerda Bender joined Profs Zuber-Skerritt and Teare as a keynote speaker, each of them presenting a stimulating and unique approach to community engagement. A panel of students and staff then discussed their challenges and successes in conducting community-based research. Various presentations followed in the afternoon, with roundtable discussions enabling interaction. On Friday morning, there was a team meeting for the project and we were privileged to host a GULL awards ceremony on Saturday. Human Movement Science students from the University of Pretoria who have been implementing the GULL programme at Eersterus as part of their service learning module received Professional Bachelor of Community Development awards from GULL, with the community members receiving certificates and diplomas, depending on the level they had attained. Their presentations indicated the vast amount of personal development and professional skills each group had achieved. Awardees from other communities included a group of women who had started a crèche, as well as a person who had instigated a sustainable school-based support team. This event was attended by our Director for Community Engagement, Ms Beatrix Bouwman, and Prof Rantoa Letšosa, representing the Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Teaching-Learning, and both were keen to introduce this idea to our community projects and service learning activities. I know this whole week was a motivating learning experience, as I received many s and personal feedback from those who had attended, attesting to that. Several research ideas for the future were hatched, and new collaborations forged. As project leader, I would like to thank all colleagues who supported these events and helped to make them a success. In particular, I would like to extend my appreciation to Profs Balfour and Kobus Mentz for their encouragement and support. Lastly, thanks go to Mss Saartjie Venter and Danika Alberts and their team for helping to organise the whole thing!

Onderwysdinee Eendag lank, lank gelede was daar n onderwyser in Sprokiesland.

Utrecht Summer School on Mathematics and Science Education By Ms Anja Human I was one of sixty-four students from eleven countries who attended the Utrecht Summer School on Mathematics and Science Education organised by the Freudenthal Institute for Science and Mathematics Education. Various lectures and workshops were conducted with the aim of informing us about the latest developments in curriculum development and research in the field of mathematics and science education. Topics that were of special interest to me were International comparisons of science and mathematics education: TIMMS and PISA, workshop on algebra for primary education, openended modelling tasks in Dutch mathematics education, Noticing children s learning, Promoting inquiry in mathematics and science education, and active thinking. For me, one of the highlights of this summer school was the school visits, where we could observe what education in Dutch mathematics classrooms is like. The director of the Summer School handing out certificates to students who attended the Summer School. I wish to especially thank my supervisor Prof Marthie van der Walt and the research director, Prof Cornelia Roux, for making it possible for me to attend this summer school. I will always remember this special event.
