3 Partners in Education Prof Balfour and Dr Mochwanesi signing a memorandum of understanding between NWU and Vuselela College which supports the integration of FET colleges into the higher education sector. The MoU enables a five-year partnership between the College and the University through which the ongoing development of academic personnel at the College will be facilitated in partnership with the Faculty. The Faculty has hereby undertaken to develop a specialist series of modules and qualifications for FET college lecturers, and to conduct an impact study on the efficacy of the training received by College staff. Message from the Dean With the month of May fast ushering the Faculty towards the mid-point of the year, we re already approaching oncoming undergraduate and continuing education examinations with all the readiness that requires! Of course, the past few weeks have been filled with events in which the Faculty continues to demonstrate its commitment to the profession in terms of quality programmes and professional development opportunities for in-service teachers, as well as its growth in terms of research and development. Towards the end of April, I contributed towards the activities of the Transformation and Diversity Office (under the auspices of Dr Ingrid Tufvesson in the Institutional Office), by presenting a workshop to staff and students (gathered at the Willows Hotel on 7 May) together with Mr Jacques Rothmann (from Sociology in the Faculty of Arts) on sexuality and identity in the academy this was part of a series of workshops on diversity in the workplace to be offered to all three campuses of the NWU in the course of In early May, we welcomed the senior management (Dr Mochwanesi, Mr Ntwe and Mr Waddington) of Vuselela College on a return visit to formally sign the Memorandum of Understanding with the Faculty (represented by its three school directors Prof Spamer, Prof Mentz and Prof Richter and myself). The MoU serves as the basis for the network of FET colleges that Prof Spamer is busy forming (and which we described in our previous newsletter) and our hope is that NWU (Potchefstroom Campus) will develop a core of FET colleges with which it works and with whom it engages the sector through a number of innovative initiatives. Our intentions in forming such a network (as with the development of school support networks in collaboration with the Department of Education s Kenneth Kaunda District) is to contribute to the Minister s vision for FET college development as contained in the Green Paper (released for comment in early 2012), and also to support the integration of FET colleges into the higher education sector. The colleges are very much our partners in education in South Africa.

4 On 1 May, we also welcomed the appointment of Prof Lesley Wood (from Port Elizabeth most recently) to the Faculty. Lesley is a specialist in HIV/ AIDS education and brings to the Faculty a wealth of international networking and project work, which I am certain will be of interest and relevance to the Faculty and those colleagues keen on developing this aspect of our research profile. Contributing to the Partnerships for Hope, the School of Continuing Teacher Education (SCTE) welcomed Mr Attie Mokhahlane and Ms Patience Selesha (corporate social investment coordinators for South African Breweries) to a special ceremony at Resolofetse Secondary School. In the year that the project, under the coordination of Prof Van Vollenhoven (also chair of the Faculty s Service Learning Committee), has been involved in three schools in the KKD, there has been a noted improvement in the children s academic performance and the use of interactive whiteboards can be seen to have the potential to enable the attainment of a high standard of teaching across the schools, as well as the development of teachers awareness of best practice (from each other in participating schools). An initiative of Prof Spamer, the School Professional Development Project attracted the sponsorship of SAB and the support of an enthusiastic and capable team of SCTE colleagues, who demonstrated a Mathematics lesson on the day. Together with our partners from the Kenneth Kaunda District (Mr Mogaki, Circuit Manager, North West Department of Education), we were all thrilled with the results and possibilities of the project, which can make for a fascinating research impact study soon. A highlight in our academic year must surely be the visit of acclaimed experts in cooperative learning. Between 8 and 10 May, Profs David and Roger Johnson from the University of Minnesota (USA), internationally renowned academics with thirty years of publication in the field, and international recognition as experts in cooperative learning. This visit, organised by Prof Elsa Mentz (School for Curriculum-Based Studies), Prof Roux (Director of the Research Focus Area) Prof Kobus Mentz (School of Education) and an excellent team of administrative assistants, entailed a three-day workshop series on cooperative learning in practice and a prestige lecture (workshop) on the evening of 9 May. These workshops were attended by colleagues from UNISA, UKZN and our sister faculties of Engineering, Health Sciences, and Economic and Management Sciences. We are grateful for the support of Prof Amanda Lourens (Vice-Rector, Research), who supported the initiative and enabled the Faculty to secure the visit of both brothers to South Africa. On 12 May, our Faculty, and specifically a team of colleagues and our student council, participated in Open Day and I was pleased to note that the lecture venues were packed to the brim with prospective students and their parents. My thanks to our amazingly capable Johan Liebenberg and his team for helping with this; in some quarters, we hear that as many as people crowded the campus on the day. In addition to the range of conference papers delivered this month, we were pleased to hear the voice of one of our own colleagues, the inimitable Dr Mandie Uys (Subject Chair for English Education) over the radio waves as she was interviewed on RSG on 3 May on her experience of teaching and best practice for the development of professional teachers. The activities of the language subject groups in the Faculty (English, Afrikaans and Setswana Education), the lively Dr David Johnson, Prof Cornelia Roux, Dr Roger Johnson and Prof Robert Balfour at the prestige lecture. culture of student engagement, and professional development opportunities are something we are proud to reflect on in this issue of the newsletter. My sense of this work is that it is ready to become a benchmark for the scholarship of teaching and learning, which is the focus of the NWU (PC) strategy, under the guidance of our Vice-Rec-

5 tor (Prof Mariette Lowes), for the development of teaching and learning. To align itself with campus development in terms of teaching, learning and research, the Faculty engaged on 15 May in a strategic planning workshop in order to reconsider how best to support the development of research and the optimalisation of teaching and learning development with a view to contributing to the NWU policy on teaching and learning. In closing, I extend my deep appreciation to our schools and Office of the Dean administrators, who ensure that the Faculty offers an optimum service to staff and students, and I commend their work to you as contributing to the University s vision for excellence in service, through their patience and dedication to us all. Robert Spesiale lesings en seminare Carnal aesthetics: Challenging the visual in feminist analysis Utrecht University, the Netherlands, April 2012 Shan Simmonds The interdisciplinary PhD course/seminar brought together 18 PhD students from Sweden, the Netherlands, South Africa, Ukraine and the UK. Two aspects of the course that were common to all students were the inclusion (of whatever magnitude) of visual research and feminist theory in the thesis. Every student was involved in critical discussions on the keynote addresses and the prescribed reading material (articles and chapters), as well as during their own and other students presentations pertaining to the thesis. A valuable insight from the course was engaging in and with the notions of transgressive imagery through the senses. This theme was approached within the visual research domain of film studies and photography predominantly, and emphasis was placed on the conceptualisation of notions such as affect, embodiment, carnality, grotesqueness and the hierarchy of the senses from feminist theory perspectives. Two of the presenters, Bettina Papenburg and Marta Zarzycka, are the editors of the book Carnal Aesthetics: Transgressive Imagery and Feminist Politics (London: IB Tauris, 2012). 8 Research Africa Workshop On 25 April, Janette Kruger and Verona Cassim attended the Research Africa workshop at the Tarentaal Centre, Ferdinand Postma Library. Research Africa is a database for researchers in Africa. This platform focuses on assisting researchers in obtaining funding for research within their specific field. It also contains articles on recent research done in Africa. All researchers are able to access Research Africa via the University s website. Once they have been registered, a personal profile can be created stating their field of research. All registered researchers on the system can enable customised alerts to keep them up to date with the latest developments. During the workshop, the facilitator spent the first hour explaining the process and afterwards helped the attendees individually to create their profile and search for research opportunities within their field. It was a very successful workshop and Research Africa makes powerful search tools available to help all researchers find the funding opportunities and news articles that interest them. Workshop, Amos course: 3-4 April, NWU Potchefstroom Campus Hennie Esterhuizen and Seugnet Blignaut attended the IBM SPSS Amos course on structural equation modelling for building statistical models with more accuracy than before using standard multivariate statistical techniques. The software enables one to specify, estimate, assess and present a statistical model in an intuitive interface to show hypothesised relationships among variables. Alternatively, SPSS Amos offers a non-graphical method to specify models. In educational contexts, SPSS Amos can be used to evaluate training programme outcomes, to determine impact on classroom effectiveness, or evaluate programme outcomes or behavioural models. It builds models that more realistically reflect complex relationships because numeric variables, whether observed (such as non-experimental data from a survey) or latent (such as satisfaction and loyalty), can be used to predict other numeric variables. It enables researchers to easily compare, confirm and refine models through drag-and-drop drawing functions. Models that used to take days to create can now be completed in minutes. Although both Hennie and Seugnet found the training worthwhile, they are not yet ready to use the software independently. They do however have a better understanding of the complex foundational statistical principles used in Hennie s PhD analyses. Mr Hennie Esterhuizen.

9 Akademiese besoekers vanaf ander universiteite Drs David en Roger Johnson, Universiteit van Minnesota Drs David en Roger Johnson van die Universiteit van Minnesota het die NWU vanaf 7 tot 11 Mei as gaste van die Fakulteit Opvoedingswetenskappe besoek. Die Johnsons word as die internasionale leiers in koöperatiewe leer beskou. Hulle het al meer as 500 artikels en 50 boeke oor die onderwerp gepubliseer. Hulle is ook al met toekennings deur organisasies soos die American Educational Research Association, American Psychological Association, American Society for Engineering Education en die Regsfakulteit by Harvard Universiteit vereer. Die Johnsons het n werkswinkel op die kampus aangebied, wat deur kollegas van Opvoedingswetenskappe, Gesondheidswetenskappe, Ekonomiese en Bestuurswetenskappe, Akademiese Steundienste, Ingenieurswese en ander universiteite bygewoon is. Navorsers in die Fakulteit Opvoedingswetenskappe hoop om na afloop van die besoek n studiegroep uit alle fakulteite byeen te kry om transdissiplinêre navorsing oor koöperatiewe leer aan die NWU te bevorder. Uitruilstudente vanaf Driestar Educatief in Gouda, Nederland Die Potchefstroomkampus van die Noordwes-Universiteit het n uitruilooreenkoms met die Driestar Educatief Hogeschool van Gouda in Nederland om jaarliks twee onderwysstudente van hulle by ons te ontvang. Vanaf die NWU stuur ons ook twee studente na hul kampus. Hierdie jaar het ons Anneleen van Duinen en Ester Langerak hier ontvang. Hulle was vanaf 21 April tot 5 Mei 2012 hier. Dankie aan Laerskool Mooirivier wat die studente geakkommodeer het om praktiese ervaring in skoolverband te kon opdoen. Verder het die twee ook saam met die NWUstudente klasse bygewoon om te ervaar hoe die akademiese kultuur op ons kampus is. 10 Anneleen en Ester het tydens hul besoek aan die Skool vir Kurrikulumgebaseerde Studies ook deelgeneem aan die ry- n-fiets-projek. Hulle het elk n fiets ontvang om te gebruik tydens hul verblyf en het op n omgewingsvriendelike wyse hulle weg op die kampus gevind. Dr Carl Kirstein, wat aan beheer van die uitruilprojek staan, bedank dr Schalk Raath graag vir die beskikbaarstelling van die fietse. Die studente het Potchefstroom platgery en kon op plekke kom wat in die verlede nie moontlik was nie. Mee Anneleen van Duinen en Ester Langerak saam met drs Scalk Raath en Carl Kirstein. RSG se gesprek met dr Mandie Uys Na aanleiding van die volgende artikel in die New York Times, asook ons herhaaldelike gesprekke oor swak onderwys en swak onderwysers, het ek gedink dat dit tyd geword het dat ons aktief die beeld van die onderwyser as professionele persoon begin opbou. Die punt is dat baie ouers hul kinders selfs oor naweke by onderwysers aflaai en voortgaan met hul beroepe of stokperdjies, terwyl onderwysers Saterdag na Saterdag hul eie gesinne verwaarloos om langs die sportveld, of by redenaarskompetisies of tonele hul leerlinge by te staan. Lynette Francis van RSG het my toe op 3 Mei om agt uur die oggend geleentheid gegee om op die seepkis te klim en mense te nooi om saam te gesels oor goeie en swak onderwysers. Die reaksie was, teenstrydig met haar voorspelling, oorwegend positief teenoor onderwysers wat deur die jare n impak op mense se lewens gehad het. Hy het genoegdoenend rondgekyk na die ander gaste wat nou aandagtig staan en luister het en onder gedempte lag die gevleuelde woorde van Bernard Shaw aangehaal: Jy weet mos wat hulle van onderwysers sê: Those who can, do; those who can t, teach. So, eerlik nou, jy as onderwyser, sê bietjie vir ons wat maak (verdien) jy. Die onderwyser het n oomblik stilgebly, en toe geantwoord. Dr Mandie Uys.

English Academic camps: drama, poetry and wine Two academic camps were held for the third- and fourth-year English students in February and March 2012, respectively. The third years camp focused on the literary eras and literary theories. The events of the weekend culminated in a wine-tasting and poetry appreciation evening, during which students explored the similarities between good wine and good poetry, for as Robert Louis Stevenson said: Wine is bottled poetry. Both camps entailed activities and workshops that celebrated the wonderfully expressive nature of English and were aimed at encouraging English teachers in the making. Students dressed for the part in Swinging Twenties gear. The theme of the fourth years camp was Drama in the English classroom and students enjoyed taking part in drama activities that featured (among other things!), Oprah, an angry housewife and The Pied Piper of Hamlin. The highlight of the camp was the Murder Mystery Evening, themed around the Roaring Twenties in America. PI Pinkerton (aka Bonnita Szafranic) investigating the murder of Mugsy Malone (aka Deodat Botes).

13 The Literature Festival of the Department of English Education Algemeen As die boelie gaan werk The finalists for the The English Department s Got Talent. The Department of English brought the characters from their favourite literary works to life at the Literature Festival at the Faculty of Education Sciences, on 22 March For one day, every student and lecturer within the Department of English Education dressed up as a character from a literary work. The activities were organised and presented by the fourth years and were themed as simple game and reality shows, but were packed with literary and dramatic content, unique to each of the year groups. The first years competed in The English Department s Got Talent, a competition in which they presented their characters during lunch-time, in front of the C6 building, standing on bricks. They were assessed by the fourth-year students and the best of the group competed at the evening event, where they were judged by members of the student council. After spending the whole day in costume on campus, the department ended off the festival with an evening programme for everyone to enjoy. The second and third years took part in Who Wants to be a Millionaire?, a trivia competition featuring questions from the literary works they had completed in the various English modules. The evening ended with a picnic in front of the C6 building and provided a perfect and tranquil, almost poetic end, to a literaturefilled day. Die werklikheid is egter dat n mens die boelies van jou kinderjare dikwels glad nie ontgroei nie. En dat boelies ook ouer word en hul aggressiewe (soms nie-verbale) truuks in die werkplek uithaal. Selfs volwassenes begin al hoe meer erken boelies kan hul daaglikse werk n lewende hel maak. Dr Tiaan Kirsten (vakgroep Opvoedkundige Sielkunde en Leerderondersteuning) sê Suid-Afrikaanse werkgewers kan nie hul oë sluit vir boeliegedrag nie omdat dit n groot uitwerking op slagoffers se produktiwiteit het. Boeliegedrag vind oor n lang tydperk plaas en kan verwoestende gevolge vir die slagoffer meebring. Die fisieke simptome sluit in naarheid, bewerigheid, ongekoördineerde bewegings, koue rillings, oormatige sweet, diarree, vinnige hartklop en asemhaling, hoë bloeddruk, hoofpyn, onbeheersde gehuil en liggaamspyne. Van die sielkundige gevolge wat in navorsing na vore gekom het, is dat die slagoffer obsessief raak oor die boelie en sy gedrag, en selfs fantaseer om die boelie of sy eiendom op n gewelddadige manier iets aan te doen.

14 Ander sielkundige simptome is angs, paniekversteurings, kliniese depressie, post-traumatiese stresversteuring, skaamheid, skuldgevoelens, n sterk gevoel dat ongeregtigheid plaasvind, slaapprobleme en n slegte selfbeeld. Die slagoffer neem boonop sy probleme saam met hom of haar huis toe, waar dit huweliks- en gesinsprobleme kan veroorsaak. Dr Tiaan Kirsten Dit is belangrik om te besef die fout lê nie by slagoffers nie, sê Kirsten, en dat hulle nie swakkelinge is nie. Diep gesetelde sielkundige probleme word verbind met boelies, wat dikwels met n minderwaardigheidsgevoel verband hou. Dit is selfs moontlik dat n boelie persoonlikheidsversteurings het. Die tipiese boelie is gewoonlik in n bestuursposisie en smag na mag, beheer, dominering en onderwerping. Hy of sy wil ondergeskiktes verneder, marginaliseer en ondermyn. Kirsten verwys graag na die definisie wat dr Susan Steinman, Suid-Afrikaanse kenner van werkplekboeliegedrag, geformuleer het. Daarvolgens is n boelie iemand wat n individu of groep mense onder meer teister, intimideer, dreig, manipuleer, afdreig en onredelik teenoor hulle optree. Die verskil tussen blote normale konflik en boeliegedrag is dat laasgemelde met opset, herhaaldelik en oor n tydperk gedoen word. By boeliegedrag is daar ook elemente van kwaadwilligheid en wreedheid betrokke. Kirsten sê navorsers het selfs al na reeks-boelies verwys: boelies wat die een ná die ander persoon boelie. Sy raad aan Suid-Afrikaanse werkgewers is om toepaslike waardes, n beleid en n gedragskode daar te stel, gegrond op die beginsel dat elke persoon se menswaardigheid gerespekteer moet word. Almal in die organisasie moet hierin opgelei word en presies weet watter stappe gevolg kan word wanneer iemand oor boeliegedrag kla.enige klagte moet vinnig en doelgerig opgevolg word en skuldiges moet sigbaar gestraf word. Bestuurders wat nie hul werknemers teen boeliegedrag beskerm nie, moet ook aanspreeklik gehou word. Kirsten sê boelies se gedrag kan as sielkundige geweld beskou word en kan n werkplek op n sielkundige en sosiale vlak vergiftig. Dit is in stryd met die Suid-Afrikaanse Grondwet en die Handves vir Menseregte wat mense se reg op menswaardigheid en n veilige omgewing uitstippel. Die boelie * Begin skinderstories oor iemand. * Sweep kollegas op teen iemand. * Verskree n werknemer in die openbaar. * Pak die skuld vir goed wat verkeerd loop op die slagoffer. * Saboteer die slagoffer se werkbydrae en beeld. * Dreig en manipuleer die slagoffer dat hy sy werk sal verloor, gestraf sal word of fisiek iets aangedoen sal word as hy/sy nie saamspeel nie. * Maak inbreuk op die slagoffer se betaling en voordele. * Diskrimineer teen die slagoffer deur hom/haar byvoorbeeld in onveilige omstandighede te laat werk. * Ignoreer die slagoffer. * Weerhou opleiding van die slagoffer. * Teiken die slagoffer indien hy of sy reeds aan n mediese of sielkundige siekte ly. Wenke vir die slagoffer * Praat daaroor met mense wat jy kan vertrou. * Kry hulp. * Hou deeglik dagboek van alle voorvalle, onder meer wat gesê is, die tyd en die getuies. * Rapporteer voorvalle aan jou bestuurder of beamptes in menslike hulpbronne. * Sê vir die boelie dat sy/haar gedrag onaanvaarbaar is, maar moenie in n debat betrokke raak nie. * Vermy plekke waar jy alleen met die boelie sal wees. * As die boelie iets kwetsend sê, en jy sien n moontlike getuie in die omgewing, vra die boelie om te herhaal wat hy gesê het. * Gaan spreek jou huisdokter indien jy enige fisieke en/of sielkundige simptome begin ervaar. * Besoek n sielkundige waar jy vertroulik kan praat en wat jou sielkundige status kan neerpen. * Hou afskrifte van enige stawende dokumente.

15 School of Continuing Teacher Education broadcast to Resofoletse Secondary School in Ikageng On Thursday 3 May 2012, Resolofetse Secondary School celebrated the inauguration of their interactive white board. They sat in on a Mathematics lesson broadcast from the SCTE on the Potchefstroom Campus of the NWU. The installation of this interactive media board is part of the school project of the SCTE and was sponsored by SA Breweries. The interactive white board enables the school to receive interactive lectures directly from the SCTE, during which learners and teachers are able to respond. This is evidence of the NWU s partnership with the North West Department of Education, and of the endeavours of the NWU to engage with the community in order to empower them.

16 Cedar Kollege hou gradeplegtigheid Die 15de gradeplegtigheid van Cedar Kollege het op Vrydag 23 Maart 2012 plaasgevind. Die gradeplegtigheid is deur prof Herman van Schalkwyk, Rektor (Potchefstroomkampus); prof Barry Richter, Direkteur van die Skool vir Kurrikulumgebaseerde Studies; mnr J Liebenberg, Bedryfshoof van Administrasie en Bestuur; en dr Bertus le Roux, Waarnemende Registrateur (Potchefstroomkampus) bygewoon. Grade is aan ses studente in Grondslagfase en elf studente in Senior VOO-fase toegeken. Vier studente het hul BEd-graad met lof verwerf. Die personeel van die NWU is op n hartlike wyse ontvang en met uitstaande gasvryheid getrakteer. Die gradeplegtigheidseremonie was baie besonders. Cedar Kollege-studente wat hul graad ontvang het. NFA einde Augustus ekstern geëvalueer Baie sterkte aan prof Cornelia en haar span wat tans druk besig is met voorbereiding vir hierdie groot gebeurtenis! Ons weet die uiteinde hiervan sal goed wees.
