She is currently writing a book entitled, Encounters and Communications with Objects: Jesuit Visual and Material Culture in China, This book explores visual and material objects used by the Jesuit missionaries in their seventeenth-century China mission, and it includes three dimensions, as the three parts of the book, to demonstrate the significance of non-written encounters and communications. First, the visuality of the Christ image has been employed to corroborate the truth of Christianity to Chinese people (Visual Dimension). Second, the materiality or objecthood of Christian images was highlighted both in evangelization and reception (Material Dimension). Third, the intellectuality of scientific objects and knowledge became one of the most pivotal forces for the shaping of Christianity in China (Intellectual Dimension). This research is partially based upon her Ph.D. dissertation: Encounters in Peoples, Religions, and Sciences: Jesuit Visual Culture in Seventeenth Century China (Brown University, U.S.A., 2004). Hui-Hung began her study of Early Modern European art and history at Brown University, focusing on Christian art and its traditions, the Jesuits and Counter Reformation, as well as cross-cultural encounters between Europe and China. Since 1999, during the period of researching and writing the dissertation, she received several grants that brought her to Macao, Japan, Lisbon, Rome, the Vatican, Paris, and Taiwan to conduct the fieldworks for her project. Her article entitled The Human Body as a Universe: Understanding Heaven by Visualization and Sensibility in Jesuit Cartography in China, published in The Catholic Historical Review 93 (3): (July 2007) (AHCI), was awarded The Peter Guilday Prize by the American Catholic Historical Association, U.S.A. in January, Education Ph.D Department of History of Art and Architecture, Brown University, Providence, Rhode Island, U.S.A.
