5 PRESIDENT S MESSAGE Peter Wehner, AIA I am excited and honored to begin this year s journey as President of AIA Rochester. Michelle Murnane s mentorship and guidance over the last year has been very valuable to me. I look forward to working with her in her new position with the Board, continuing with her initiatives, and further developing them in areas that are meaningful and will benefit the Chapter. It is extremely rewarding being part of a group like this, made up of a rich variety of people with a common interest. My goal is to strengthen the bonds between our interest groups, namely, Emerging Rochester Architects (ERA), Women in Architecture, and our Small Practitioners group. It is with the active participation of these groups that I see the greatest potential for future organizational growth and stability. Other key 2014 initiatives include creating and strengthening relationships with other professional organizations, particularly the following: the Design Build Institute of America (DBIA); the Landmark Society of Western NY; the Rochester Regional Community Design Center (RRCDC); and the American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC). Also, I will continue the work of presenting ourselves as THE resource for media outlets when there is any question about buildings, design, and architectural technology. Moreover, my ultimate goal is raising awareness of our organization and of our members as thought leaders in the community and as resources for all things Architecture. With the addition of Alleghany County, we now have three schools of architecture and two junior college CAD programs within our chapter boundaries. With RIT right here in our city, and the other schools well within driving distance, I would like to see if we can create a yearly regional speaker series highlighted by a nationally recognized speaker. Lastly, we will be implementing strategies to mitigate the economic impact of the AIA national repositioning, specifically as it relates to the loss of revenue from our region's document sales and distribution. Fundraising will be more and more critical to the ongoing viability of our local chapter. Maintaining the high level of service our local office has set as the standard for our area is vital to our members, to our organization, and to me personally. Thank you for your confidence as I take on this position, and with your help, I hope to make this a very successful year for AIA Rochester. Peter R. Wehner, AIA President AIA Rochester

6 Our Mission AIA Rochester s mission is to promote the profession and practice of Architecture in the Greater Rochester Area. AIA Rochester is dedicated to providing its members opportunities for professional advancement, community involvement, and promoting design excellence in the built environment. HISTORY OF THE AMERICAN INSTITUTE OF ARCHITECTS, ROCHESTER CHAPTER Established January 1968 The Rochester Chapter of the American Institute of Architects owes its beginnings to two sources. In the early 20 th century, a few Rochester architects belonged to the Central New York Chapter, which covered a broad area from the Western line of Monroe County to the Adirondacks. In 1919, they soon recognized the need for a local organization and founded the Rochester Society of Architects. The Society quietly thrived for forty years, enjoying luncheons and an annual dinner. During the Great Depression the members set up mutual help activities as they worked to survive in those hard times. Later, with the development of better communications and easier travel, the National AIA became a recognized force. In 1962 the Society voted to become a Section of the Central New York Chapter, and members became more active in AlA affairs. Soon thereafter, it became clear that Rochester architects would benefit from becoming an independent chapter. Application was made to the National Board of the AIA for a Chapter Charter, which was granted in January 1, Initially, the Chapter consisted lf only Monroe County, however in 1981 Wayne, Livingston, Ontario, Yates and Seneca Counties were added. Since then, the Chapter has grown in health and size. Nationally it boasts of one of the highest percentages of member architects in its area. Programs expanded, and a central office was established in The loyalty and dedication of its members indicates its ongoing importance to the Rochester community. The Charter members of AIA Rochester were Hugh P. Anderson, Florence England Bishop, William C. Burwell, Michael J. Doran, James W. Gemmill, Carl F. W. Kaelber Jr., Roger F. Leaper, G. Carroll Madden, Marvin Meyer, and Myron E. Starks. 6

7 CHAPTER OBJECTIVES & ACTIVITIES OBJECTIVE 1: EDUCATION CONTINUING EDUCATION (CES) Continuing education is a requirement of membership in the AIA, as well as of the New York State Education Department. All members are required to obtain a minimum number of learning units each year in various forms of continuing education. AIA Rochester offers a variety of continuing education classes and programs throughout the year, from which members can obtain learning units for CES requirements. The Chapter automatically records these units for AIA Rochester sponsored events. Topics range from materials and systems to codes, design, and management issues. EXAM REVIEW CLASSES The Chapter organizes and sponsors review classes for the Architectural Licensing Exam. The classes are held throughout the year. OBJECTIVE 2: KNOWLEDGE DELIVERY AIA ROCHESTER NEWSLETTER The Chapter newsletter is published on a monthly basis. It is circulated among members, affiliates, government officials, and advertisers. We encourage all members to submit articles and information to the staff for publication. AIA ROCHESTER WEB SITE The Chapter web site provides its membership and the community with information about the profession, local architectural events and issues. It also includes links to member firms, AIA National and AIA New York State. Visit us at OBJECTIVE 3: EXTERNAL DIALOGUE PUBLIC RELATIONS Press releases and invitations to media personnel for events and activities are used to help advocate the architectural profession. EXPLORER SCOUTS IN ARCHITECTURE AIA Rochester has been involved with the Boy Scouts since 1971, providing youth with an inside look at the profession. Lectures, field trips, and projects make for a real hands-on learning experience. Evening classes are held once a month from October to May. Chapter members donate their time to help the next generation of architects and patrons. 7

8 CHAPTER OBJECTIVES & ACTIVITIES DESIGN AWARDS Design Excellence Awards is a celebration of the profession. Firms and individuals submit boards and models for display. The Chapter sponsors an annual design awards competition. Local firms submit projects that are judged by an impartial jury. This black tie affair includes a multi-media presentation and dinner. CAREER DAYS/SHADOWING Schools requesting architects for Career Days are scheduled through the Chapter. Interested students can also be placed in half or full day shadowing programs at local firms. Awards are given to graduating high school seniors and college students pursuing a career from an accredited architecture school. Chapter members may contribute any amount to the fund at any time. CHAPTER OFFICE The Chapter is a full distributor of AIA documents to the architectural and construction industry. The Chapter maintains an extensive library of reference materials for exam review, AIA fellowship binders and urban design. The Chapter also acts as a community resource. It maintains a referral list for individuals and companies seeking an architect, as well as gallery space dedicated to the display of local architectural design award submissions and student projects. GOLF TOURNAMENT The Chapter has been sponsoring an annual golf tournament since the early 1980 s to raise funds for AIA Rochester education and scholarship programs. New York State does not require this national program, but it is required by NCARB.
