House Q4: How many bedrooms? Three Q5: How much do you pay per month? $1100 Around $30-40/month electric, $25 water, Gas depends on the season; could approach $300/mon in winter Q7: Are there other units within your building? n/a n/a Quiet, close to hospital, you can get much more house for your dollar compared to east side Would strongly consider buying if you're considering staying longer than 3 years. There's fairly good inventory, low prices in providence. I had difficulty applying for a mortgage as a medical student (with no pay stubs to submit) but was able to get a decent loan from Coastway bank (a ri credit union) targeted to doctors. 2 / 63

6 #6 Started: Tuesday, February 17, :08:09 AM Last Modified: Tuesday, February 17, :22:25 AM Time Spent: 00:14:15 Providence Eastside, near Hope St and Rocheambeau Q4: How many bedrooms? Two Q5: How much do you pay per month? 1300 Electric is per month. Gas is the same until winter, Jan/Feb usually peaks at $200 Q7: Are there other units within your building? Two units above us, second and third floors Q8: Landlord or property management company contact information, if applicable. The east side is very walkable, either down near wayland square or near north hope st where we are. Lots of parks, shops, good restaurants, safe and quiet. When I got this survey as an incoming intern someone said only get gas heat. I'm from the west so I don't know anything about winters but that was great advice. So much cheaper than oil. Think about parking, there are some neighborhoods that don't allow overnight street parking at all, and some that do but with a yearly permit (~$120), and when it snows there can be street parking bans everywhere for the plows so off-street parking is a plus. 6 / 63

Three Q5: How much do you pay per month? 1460 Winter months are fairly expensive (meaning $400+), during the remainder of the year approximately $100 Q7: Are there other units within your building? No N/A (independent landlord) Very quiet neighborhood, nice area to walk our dog (either in the streets or in the lovely green areas on Pleasant Valley Parkway). Would consider what your priorities for housing are (meaning do you prefer to have the atmosphere of living downtown for a higher rent, or are you okay with having a slightly longer commute to live in a quieter, less expensive area). Also, pay close attention to heating costs when you are looking (meaning how old is the furnace, is it gas or oil heat - oil is far more expensive) 14 / 63

Studio Q5: How much do you pay per month? Q7: Are there other units within your building? Many Chestnut Hill Realty, Regency Plaza in-house gym and package room, conference and theater rooms available for when I'm too lazy to go out, but want to leave my tiny apartment. Live within your financial means - luxury apartments are nice, but as the name implies, are considered a luxury. Living at this apartment complex meant that I wasn't saving much money on rent, and it meant that I needed to scrimp and save on my other expenses. Also pick a place where you can have a reasonable commute avoiding the I-95, if traffic on the highway gets backed up for whatever reason. 16 / 63
17 #17 Started: Tuesday, February 17, :56:12 PM Last Modified: Tuesday, February 17, :58:15 PM Time Spent: 00:02:02 East side of Providence Q4: How many bedrooms? 20 #20 Started: Tuesday, February 17, :10:05 PM Last Modified: Tuesday, February 17, :21:12 PM Time Spent: 00:11:07 Pawtuxet Village/Edgewood neighborhood Q2: Do you rent or own? Own Q3: Do you live in a... House Q4: How many bedrooms? Three Q5: How much do you pay per month? $1400 mortgage split between my husband and I $300 for water, gas, electricity (not oil). Q7: Are there other units within your building? No Q8: Landlord or property management company contact information, if applicable. Pawtuxet Village is a very cute young families with children neighborhood, about a block from Naragansett Bay, about 8 min. south of the hospital. A lot of attendings live in the area. There is a post office, gas stations, farmers market, many cute restaurants (some BYOB!) and coffee shops, easy access to docks/kayaking/paddleboarding/rowboating, lots of nearby parks, running paths. The neighborhood is a real community and people are friendly. Much less petty crime than the Eastside because there are fewer college students/less turnover rate. Do not have to get on freeway to get to work from this area. We are very close to the CPC clinic (<5min). There are apartments mixed into some of the houses around here. Rent is cheaper than than the Eastside and houses affordable if you are looking to buy (we are on a 2 resident income for comparisons). 20 / 63
21 Pick a place where you feel like you will access what Providence has to offer in the few hours (outside of sleeping) you have off work every week. If you do not want to drive far to go out, then live in a neighborhood that has multiple restaurants and bars. Same goes for living near a gym if thats your thing, or living near nature if you like to be outdoors. (PS Nothing is very far in rhode island if you are not from here!) There are a lot of great areas to choose from in Providence. If you are unsure about buying, and want to get to know the area first, multiple people rented for 6 months and then made offers on homes, so that is do-able, albeit taxing to move over a weekend unless you are on block/elective. 21 / 63

Two Q5: How much do you pay per month? Q7: Are there other units within your building? 1 other unit Q8: Landlord or property management company contact information, if applicable. Quiet neighborhood; good neighbors. Drive to RIH is 5 minutes and close to the eastside (restaurants, parks). Decide if you want to live in the city or just outside. Definitely more area and significantly cheaper if you live outside of downtown. 22 / 63

29 #28 Started: Tuesday, February 17, :02:19 PM Last Modified: Tuesday, February 17, :09:24 PM Time Spent: 00:07:05 Smith Hill Q4: How many bedrooms? Two Q5: How much do you pay per month? 900 around for electricity only heat, trash, etc. all paid for by landlord Q7: Are there other units within your building? yes Daniel Hopkins Short walk from the VA (8-10 minute walk) Short walk from Providence Place (10-12 min) /downtown area 2 mi from Whole Foods Less than 1 mile from VA, 2.3 miles from RIH, 3 miles from Miriam Hospital Would be open minded and look both in and out of College Hill as the west side is very affordable and sometimes unfairly given a bad rep. Downtown Providence is very nice too. Would keep distance from the hospital in mind as commuting can be arduous in the winter. Also FYI - Our landlord is renting the other unit in our apartment in Smith Hill (currently half occupied by my husband, a grad student, and myself) Heat is included, garages, free laundry etc. (contact info above) 29 / 63

Also pretty good schools for my kids. Don't be afraid to look outside of Providence, but aim for a short commute. It adds up! 44 / 63

Large yard, quiet safe neighborhood, Close to shopping and right off the highway I rented in wayland square for my intern year and then bought a house because we were expecting a second child. 60 #59 Started: Wednesday, March 04, :40:08 AM Last Modified: Wednesday, March 04, :49:45 AM Time Spent: 00:09:37 I live in Fox Point, which is a neighborhood on the East side of Providence Q4: How many bedrooms? One Q5: How much do you pay per month? 895 gas is included in my rent. My electric bill varies from month to month, but is usually around $25-$30 a month. Q7: Are there other units within your building? yes, mine is one of six units My landlord is J P Londergan. I can get contact information if anyone is interested, but to b e quite frank, I would not strongly recommend my building to incoming residents. The rent is relatively low and I like the location. I would look for a place where your landlord will be fair, responsive to your concerns, and understanding of your needs, because it can be really tough when that is not the case. Parking can be tough in Providence, so look for a place that offers off street parking. A landlord that takes care of snow removal is really convenient in the winter time. Different people have different priorities when looking for a home, but I think finding a place that you can rest easily in (ie not too loud of a neighborhood) is important in residency. You can save a lot of money by living in an older building (which is great), but you don't want to have a place with too many maintenance problems, because that just adds stress to an already stressful time. 60 / 63

Apartment on 3rd floor may be opening up in April. next to the water, marinas. Within walking distance of several bars, restaurants, ice cream shops. Don't only look at the East Side. There are plenty of nice places to live close to the hospital in Cranston/Warwick to consider if you want a little bit more space and pay less money 62 / 63
63 #62 Started: Saturday, March 07, :00:27 PM Last Modified: Saturday, March 07, :06:31 PM Time Spent: 00:06:03 East Side/Mount Hope Q4: How many bedrooms? Two Q5: How much do you pay per month? $1100 $110 Q7: Are there other units within your building? 2 total private landlord, only this unit - fyi, my rent includes 2 off street parking spaces (one covered, one uncovered) - close to Miriam, Hope street shops/restaurants - easy to get onto I-95 - close to Blackstone for jogging/biking - affordable and residential neighborhood (not a lot of college students or nighttime noise) - Make sure you look into parking options, really recommend covered/garage parking intern year. You don't want to get have to wake up 20 minutes earlier to defrost/shovel out your car. - Usually at least half of the intern class lives somewhere on the East Side which makes socialization easier. You'd be surprised how lazy you get as residency progresses...it's nice to be able to walk or drive a few minutes to your friends' houses. Suddenly going across town or getting on the highway to hang out feels like a schlep. 63 / 63
