2 photo: Wojciech Krynski photo: Wojciech Krynski Zlote Tarasy Ulica Zlota 59 Warsaw Zlote Tarasy (Golden Terraces) is one of those commercial megastructures that are cropping up all over the world More than square meters of mixed-use development occupies a large multi-level plot in the very centre of the Polish capital Its aggressive urban presence, chaotic-looking composition and dull grey cladding is mitigated by an extraordinary glass roof covering the heart of the valley Its undulating shape was inspired by the idea of a piece of cloth stretched over a number of spheres From the outside the roof is rather overwhelmed by the higher parts of the complex, but from the inside the roof imbues the characterless retail space with a sense of openness and exceptionality Among the dense accumulation of signs, goods and interior architecture elements it boldly acts as a single huge window providing wide views towards the city's urban skyline and an illusion of open-air shopping photo: Wojciech Krynski 2007 Technical engineer Supplier Jerde Partnership International ARUP Waagner-Biro Stahl-Glas-Technik ING Real Estate ReWritable_pl 2

3 photo: Christian Richters photo: Christian Richters Royal Netherlands Embassy Warsaw ul Kawalerii Warsaw The Embassy is situated near Lazienski Park and combines the chancery and ambassador's residence The objective was a design that reflects the Dutch tradition of transparency and openness Inspired by the Baroque style of Tylman van Gameren, a Dutch architect who influenced Polish architecture in the 17th century, the chancery is designed to be light and translucent Retaining most of the trees, the new complex radiates a park-like quality The residence is conceived as a villa in a park, its stone exterior reinforcing the concept of an independent element in the environment A courtyard between the buildings allows views out into the landscape and a feature gate with an organic design combines with a glazed screen to create a second layer to the chancery Natural stone loggias connect this 'open' outer wall to the exterior envelope of the building These elements mediate between the street and the new embassy As a result, the Embassy is both part of and enclosed by its surroundings photo: Christian Richters m², Interior architect, Landscape architect Designed by Erick van Egeraat Designed_by_Erick_van_Egeraat Dutch Ministery of Foreign Affairs, The Hague Monday - Friday: 09:00-13:00 and 14:00-17:00 them at war[at]minbuzanl or call

4 Metropolitan Office Building Plac Marszalka Józefa Pilsudskiego Warsaw Pilsudski Square is one of Warsaw's most important public spaces This huge square at the heart of the city is rich in historical and cultural heritage The seventeenth-century Saski Palace and the Baroque Brühl Palace that lined it were both destroyed in the Second World War but there are proposals to rebuild them Large crowds congregate in the square to visit the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier; ceremonial events take place in it and local residents traverse it every day The Metropolitan Office Building occupies the northern edge of the square, completing its missing side and re-establishing the formal volume of the square It attempts a sensitive response to a unique set of challenges posed by the historic nature of the square The aim was to create a thoroughly modern counterpart to the neighbouring historical buildings - matching their height, mass and materials - without resorting to pastiche (text from architect's website) m² Main designer, Foster & Partners JEMS DEGI pkrajewski_pl 4

5 Harmony Office Center Stanislawa Zaryna Warsaw This is a commercial A-class office building with retail on the ground floor Standing on a one-storey plinth, the building consists of three independent segments housing office lobbies, retail and restaurants The exterior façades are made of stone and glass, whereas the interior façades are glazed The design by Grupa 5 was chosen in a competition (text from architects' website) Project is not public! m² Main designer, Grupa 5 APAKA Eko-Park SA pkrajewski_pl 5

6 Building B7 Stanislawa Zaryna Warsaw This is a luxurious apartment block, located on the site of the EKO PARK housing complex Building B7 is a freestanding building set on a shared garage The positioning, shape and outline of the building respond to the detailed analysis of sunlight and shading patterns The building is the dominant feature of the B7 phase and features a very individualised façade texture and an interesting interplay with the surrounding buildings The apartments are served by a single internal stairwell and a centrally located glass lift The stairwell enjoys sunlight from a large rooflight and several irregular windows on the lower floor levels The façade features a free vertical arrangement thanks to the proportions of windows as well as decorative lines down the full height of the walls The elevations are comprised of refined materials with interesting compositions of stone, sandstone, glass and standard coloured plaster (text from architects' website) Project is not public! m² Grupa 5 Ekopark pkrajewski_pl 6

7 University of Warsaw Library Dobra Warsaw Once you have seen this green building, it is impossible to mistake it for another Green façades with monumental tablets illustrate mathematical formulas, sheet music and quotes from selected books in various alphabets The more than one hectare garden roof abounds in greenery Characteristic trellises for vines and creepers cover the external walls and interior of the main passage The entrance is crowned with an open book with the dictum HINC OMNIA (all from here) and tremendous columns with statues of philosophers The library consists of the front (crescent) and main buildings A glass-covered passage links both buildings, which are incorporated into a unique landscape - the space between the bank of the Vistula river and Warsaw's embankment There is no other building in containing so many direct and indirect references to the worlds of culture and nature (text from ura-murator Magazine 5/2006) m² Main designer, Landscape architect Badowski Budzynski Kowalewski Architekci Irena Bajerska Warsaw University Foundation pkrajewski_pl 7

8 InterContinental Warszawa Emilii Plater Warsaw _glowna InterContinental Warszawa is a hotel which was completed in November 2003 At the moment, it is the tallest hotel in (164m), the third tallest in Europe, and one of the tallest 5-star hotels in the world It features 328 rooms and 11 conference rooms On the 43rd and 44th floors there is a swimming pool which is the highest indoor swimming pool in Europe The structure takes the form of a reinforced concrete monolith This gives it a massive look, and the windows are smaller than in skyscrapers of steel constructionthe reinforced concrete pillar that gives the tower its unique shape is not merely the whim of the architect - it's a creative response to the planning guidelines, ensuring daylight penetration to the housing block behind the tower InterContinental can be divided into three parts: a five-storey pedestal which corresponds in height with nearby housing blocks; then 16 stories cut away behind the pillar; and 24 square floors to the top (text from Wikipedia) Architekturbüro Tadeusz Spychala InterContinental Hotels pkrajewski_pl 8

9 photo: Peter Cook photo: Peter Cook New British Embassy Warsaw ul Kawalerii Warsaw Set in its own grounds in an area of the city devoted to embassies, the new British Embassy has a serene and formal quality Its long form is centralized by an attic in an elementally neo-classical way and underlined by the longer figures of the walls and railings enclosing the site The building is explicit in its conservation of energy; its glass elevations function as the outer skin of a double façade, which provides substantial thermal insulation in winter and relieves heat in the summer The outer layer, delineated by pale bronze aluminium mullions and mirror glass reflects the sky and trees of the surrounding gardens The ground floor is reserved for public activities and features a large space for exhibition and events, and a café that opens onto the garden Occupying the remainder of the ground floor is the area for Consular Section and UK Border Agency complete with a public waiting area accessed via its own entrance from a route through the grounds photo: Peter Cook m² Tony Fretton UK Foreign & Commonwealth Office Claire_Curtice_Publicists 9

10 Rondo ONZ Panska Warsaw The design for this landmark building provides flexible, high-quality office spaces at the gateway to the prestigious Sciana Zachodnia super-block To optimize efficiency and letting opportunities, the passenger lifts were displaced outside of the body of the building, thus creating a floor-plate that can accommodate both cellular and open plan layouts The visible circulation of people and elevators moving through the sky lobbies will animate the tower and further reinforce its identity as a transparent state-of-the-art building Project is not public! m² Associate architect Skidmore, Owings & Merrill AZO MGPA / Rondo Property Investments Sp JC 10
