GILBERT KONK LIFE REAL ESTATE WRITER The stately, historic, three bedroom/three bath residence at 625 Eaton St. was built in 1898 but the land s history predates that by many years and is inscribed on a doorpost: In 1821 this plot of land was sold for $2,000 to John Watson Simonton. In 1821 and in 1824 Mr. Simonton sold the land for $5,000 to John Whitehead... and in 1924 the house sold for $1,000. Only four other families have lived in the house since then. In the 60s the residence even operated as an art gallery which was named Casa Avila. Founding fathers, stable families and art: how could the vibes be better? Just inside the entrance gate is a gnarley tree festooned with blooming orchids; there are at least a dozen separate plants (not all blooming) clinging there. e tree grows at the edge of a handsomely paved brick path that leads to the steps and also along the side of the house back to the pool deck. Most important, this is a lovely, wonderful home. It is being sold turn-key, Realtor Jim Hogan reported, so the comfortable furnishings, including a collection of delightful antiques, will remain, perfectly suited to the warm wood throughout; the entire home was built of Dade County pine and has been remodeled into an unusual, more open floor plan. e house, counting that back pool deck, is very square, both wide and deep. A covered porch the width This historic home boasts six exterior doors onto the upper and lower front porches. One exterior door is located at the end of the hallway. Besides entry to the amazing kitchen, the wide end of the L offers doors to a large storage closet, a full bath and a large front bedroom with a queen-sized fourposter bed, louvre-doored closet and a third door onto the front porch. Louvered interior doors and wide wooden venetian blinds appear throughout the house, as do 10-foot ceilings, crown moldings and individual Halcyon Inverter ac/heating units. e three additional exterior doors upstairs, with the same fulllength, lavender blue shutters, open from two large bedrooms onto the second floor covered porch. e cross ventilation in this home surely provides breezes on all but the stillest days. e master suite features a large walk-in closet and ensuite bath which, like the other two baths in the

Saving the best for (almost) last, we come to that amazing kitchen. Designed and equipped by a couple who are both professional chefs, it is, in a phrase, to die for. Special features are a 6 x 2.5-foot stainless island/work table, a large hanging rack for pots and pans, a majestic vaulted ceiling (like the walls, of mostly natural Dade County pine), two sinks (one Corian with a motion-sensor water faucet, one extradeep stainless), a complete matched set of high-end stainless GE appliances including (of course) a chef s range and a complete set of matching stainless small appliances and decorative/functional accessories, even a stainless garbage can. At the other end of the kitchen is a double pass-through window with a serving shelf and the door accessing the pool deck and the heated dipping pool/spa. roughout the home are delightful touches such as oriental rugs and glass doorknobs the latter probably reproductions but very true to period. e frosting on this architectural cake is its location: two blocks from both Duval street and just a few blocks from the Historic Seaport. 4 MEET THE REALTORS Doug Mayberry puts down roots in Key West by TERRY SCHMIDA KONK LIFE REAL ESTATE WRITER Doug Mayberry Real Estate founder Doug Mayberry likes to say that he traded in a vegetable garden up north, for [his] orchids down here. But the truth is that Mayberry has accomplished a lot during his two decades in Key West. He was born and raised in Arkansas, and earned a B.S. in Electrical Engineering from Tulane University in New Orleans. He then studied in the MBA program at Southern Methodist University in Dallas. During a colorful corporate career, Mayberry followed promotions with such giants as Procter & Gamble, Unilever, and Vie de France, to Chicago, New York, Hoboken, N.J., and Baltimore, all markets where he also bought and sold real estate. Mayberry first became enamored with the Southernmost City in the early 1980s, and became a frequent visitor. By 1995 he had moved to Key West full-time, and a year later, began selling real estate. As a resident of the Conch Republic, Mayberry undertook an extensive renovation of his 150-year-old home, and tried his hand at local gardening, cultivating not just orchids, but also tropical fruit trees, bananas and native butterfly plants. It always amazes me how quickly things grow in our warm, sunny climate, he said. I took a series of orchid classes at the MARC House, which really helped me a lot. After 11 years of working for others, as part of the top-selling team at the Southeby s affiliate, Mayberry founded the company that bears his name, in Since that time, the company has risen to become a market leader in Key West real estate. Mayberry currently serves on the board of the Community Foundation of the Florida Keys, after serving as the chair of that organization for two years. He is a past board president, and current member of the Key West Association of Realtors. He has also served on the boards of the Key West Symphony Orchestra (now the South Florida Symphony,) and the Metropolitan Community Church. Mayberry supports the arts and such non-profit organizations as Last Stand, GLEE, Reef Relief, the National Wildlife Federation, the Audubon Society, Habitat for Humanity, and FIRM.
