First noted on Key West s Historic Sanborn Fire Map of 1889, according to realtor Michelle Clauson Kirby, the house is said to have been the first house built on the 19th century Rocky Rd., later called Division St. and now named in honor of the president who made Key West his working-vacation home. It features beautifully-aged, possibly-original wood floors and lots of Dade County pine, one wall in its original, unpainted condition. e comfortable sitting porch that runs the width of house in front (check out the lovely leaded-glass dragonfly porch light) opens directly onto the airy, vaulted living room; this leads to a mini-great room of dining room and kitchen, which also boast a high vaulted ceiling. A white picket fence adds to the charm and curb appeal of this classic Old Town cottage. The handsome kitchen opens onto a back dining and lounging deck 33 e bigger surprise, however, is a room-sized loft above a guest bedroom accessed from the right side of the living room. e current owner uses it as an office, noted Clauson Kirby, but there was room for a full-sized mattress there if extra guest space were needed. is is a total bonus. I didn t even count it in the square footage, she said. ere is a second guest or family bedroom off the dining room, with a full bath tucked behind it, off a short hall containing a built-in pantry/utility closet. ese are both decent-sized bedrooms; the master bedroom, however, is huge. It is especially bright and airy, with an en suite bath, French doors opening onto the rear deck and another windowed exterior door opening onto a laundry shed and ultimately to the right-side driveway. ere are large, historically-correct, six-over-six paned windows throughout and many windows have Bahama shutters. e rear deck, which is also accessed from the kitchen, has hammock and dining space as well as opening onto the side deck containing the heated cocktail/soaking pool with its soothing, trickling water feature. At the other end is another bonus, an unimproved shed easily converted into a finished workroom/toolroom, a playroom or even additional guest space.
