Recently acquired by Thomboy Properties, known for their successful transformation of more than 20 homes in Palm Springs, this property will debut for public tours during Modernism Week Dubbed Hidden Frey, the property is relatively unknown even by Palm Springs architectural historians and because it is constructed below street level and truly hidden from view. WI Hollingsworth purchased the lot where the tennis estate now

15 Modernism Week 2018 News Release, page 2 resides, adjacent to the Racquet Club. Charlie Farrell did not want the eyesore of a chain link fence, commonly associated with tennis courts, in proximity to his Racquet Club, so Hollingsworth excavated the lot below street level to minimize visibility of his estate. Frey was hired to design the structure. It demonstrates quintessential Frey characteristics, including a rolled roof, a cantilevered carport, and an elevated pool. At just over 1,900 square feet, the demure home fronts directly onto the tennis court with a large outdoor entertaining space, three bedrooms, and four bathrooms on a gated lot. This small but remarkable property is a rare opportunity to experience Desert Modernism as it was intended. Tours of Hidden Frey run from February and tour tickets are $30. The second Featured Home is the Modernism Week Featured Home Maison a l Orange. Modernism Week has arranged for an exclusive tour of this private home in South Palm Springs, affectionately called Maison a l Orange. The Palm Springs design team of Howard Hawkes and Kevin Kemper of H3K Design worked closely with the owner over the past year customizing the house for the owner s enjoyment, but also as an expression for her love of midcentury modern architecture and Palm Springs. Walls of glass, a soaring roof line, and a Googie-inspired lounge make Maison a l Orange the pièce de résistance for retro enthusiasts. The history of the home dates back to 1960, when famed Glendale-based architect Clair Earl designed 3 neighboring houses on LaVerne Way in Palm Springs near the Twin Palms development. These houses are magnificent examples of midcentury modern architecture, each with their own characteristic look. The house sat in severe disrepair and neglect but was recently completely renovated and will be unveiled for the first time during Modernism Week Tours of Maison a l Orange run from February and tour tickets are $30. The house is also part of the Atomic Ranch Live: Seminars, Workshops and Tours on February 17. Modernism Week participants have made it clear that they desire to tour exciting homes that are rarely open to the public, said William Kopelk, Modernism Week Board Chairman. That s why this year we are offering tours of our first Showcase Home and two exciting Featured Homes. Each one of these homes showcases a remarkable blend of historic architecture, supplemented by modern design updates. We look forward to offering more Showcase and Featured Homes in future Modernism Week festivals.

Chris Mobley, former Chairman, as Chief Executive Officer, a newly created position. Both appointments take effect on June 15. Lisa Vossler Smith continues as the organization s Executive Director. Celebrating midcentury modern design, architecture, art, and culture in Palm Springs and the Coachella Valley, the 11-day Modernism Week festival has experienced exceptional growth, and in the course of the past twelve years has become one of the leading festivals of its kind in the world. This past February, an estimated 97,000 attendees enjoyed nearly 300 events and generated an economic impact of approximately $35.5 million for area hotels, shops, restaurants, and other local businesses from Palm Springs to Indian Wells and beyond. In addition, $1.3 million of the proceeds generated by ticket sales from this year s event went directly back to community neighborhoods and partner organizations, a new record for Modernism Week. William Kopelk was appointed the new Chairman of Modernism Week s board of directors, taking over from Mobley. Kopelk has a long history with the organization. He served as Chairman and cofounder in 2005 and has been an active member of the volunteer board since then. We are thrilled that William will become the new Modernism Week board chairman, said J. Chris Mobley. The entire board has been impressed by William s hard work and commitment to the goals and mission of Modernism Week, especially his focus on preservation matters. He will provide excellent leadership as the organization continues to evolve and improve while staying true to its mission. Kopelk, a native born Californian, has been a desert resident since 1997 when he founded InsideOutside, the firm responsible for many notable landscape projects such as the Ace and Saguaro Hotels, Donald Wexler s Steel House and Verbena Residence, and the then newly restored Kaufmann House. A firm believer in preservation, Kopelk received his degree in Landscape Architecture from the University of Oregon. In addition to co-founding Modernism Week, he served as President of the Palm Springs Preservation Foundation for eight years, was on the city of Palm Springs Architectural and Design Review Commission, and most recently, worked on the outreach portion of the Modernism Committee for the Sacramento based State Historic Resources Commission. Modernism Week continues to grow to meet the demand for programing and events, and this new staffing addition supports the amount of work the organization requires, said incoming board Chairman Kopelk. As Chairman, Chris had already been working on many aspects of the festival, so it made sense for us to create a Chief Executive Officer position so he could more fully devote his expertise and organizational talents to Modernism Week.

29 Modernism Week Appoints New Chairman - continued After spending 18 years working in the areas of Management Information Systems, Business Development Strategies, Urban Planning, Property Development and Affordable Housing, Mobley moved to Palm Springs in 2010 and opened Just Modern Inc. He also joined the Modernism Week Board in 2012 and was elected Chairman in Mobley, while serving as Chairman, has been instrumental in the creation of Modernism Week s headquarters for tours and events called CAMP (Community and Meeting Place) for each of the last three years, and has overseen significant improvements to and the ongoing operation of Modernism Week s web site and ticketing systems. Under his leadership, Modernism Week garnered an unprecedented amount of media attention with more than 2.75 billion impressions worldwide in In his new role, he will continue this work and strategize for the continued enhancement of the Modernism Week attendee experience, guiding the organization as it matures. The phenomenal success of Modernism Week and its role in helping to highlight Palm Springs and the greater Coachella Valley around the world has been accomplished by an extremely small paid staff and an extraordinarily committed Board of Directors. Now, by creating the CEO position, the leadership of Modernism Week is investing in its future stability and strengthening its management structure. Modernism Week celebrates and fosters appreciation of midcentury architecture and design, as well as contemporary thinking in these fields, by encouraging education, preservation, and sustainable modern living as represented in Palm Springs and the surrounding Coachella Valley. Highlighting this dedication to education, this year more than thirty lectures and films spotlighting famed architects, landscape designers, historians, design experts and authors were presented to attendees. Additional Modernism Week educational programs included several West Coast film premiers, and panels about architectural preservation and renovation. Later this year, Modernism Week will offer its annual Fall Preview from October 19-22, 2017 (tickets on sale August 1 at 12 p.m. PST) and will stage the 2018 Modernism Week festival from February 15-25, 2018 (tickets on sale November 1 at 12 p.m. PST). The funds were raised from ticket sales for official Modernism Week events, including neighborhood tours, parties, educational talks, and other events. A new official Modernism Week partner event offered this year was the Old Las Palmas Home and Garden Tour, which enabled participants to Peek Behind The Hedges of this exclusive and historic Palm Springs community. The tour featured the interiors of seven residences (including the former homes of Mary Martin, Mary Pickford, Liberace, and Howard Hughes) and the beautiful private gardens of another. It raised more than $30,000 and the Old Las Palmas Neighborhood Organization recently announced that all of the money raised from the tour will be given to area organizations that directly impact the lives of more than 4,000 Coachella Valley children. These organizations receiving donations from the tour proceeds include the Foundation for the Palm Springs Unified School District (funds will be used to send up to 75 students to camp for a week), Palm Springs Art Museum (funds will be used to transport school children to the museum for docent led museum tours and events), Palm Springs International Film Festival (funds will be used to transport school children to the Student Screening Day), Shoes That Fit (funds will buy 100 pairs of shoes for school children in need) and the Virginia Waring International Piano Competition (funds will support bus costs for bringing children to piano assemblies and underwrite teacher study guides). With this tour the neighborhood showcased some of the amazing and historic homes in Old Las Palmas to raise funds for charities. It was a true neighborhood effort, said Old Las Palmas Neighborhood Organization chair John Williams. All the funds we raised every single penny will go to charities that focus on the needs of children in the Coachella Valley. Our school principals often receive requests from the families of students about possible scholarships for summer camp, said Ellen Goodman, Executive Director of The Foundation for the Palm Springs Unified School District. As a result of this scholarship from the Old Las Palmas Neighborhood Organization we're now able to send up to 75 children to summer camp who might not otherwise been able to afford to attend. We are

31 Modernism Week 2017 Helps Local Organizations Raise Funds - continued very grateful that this neighborhood organization chose to support our students in this very generous manner." Modernism Week works closely with local neighborhood organizations like Old Las Palmas to showcase iconic Palm Springs residences and other architecturally significant buildings during tours in many of the city s 43 official neighborhoods. These tours raise significant funds for participating neighborhood organizations. Some neighborhoods donate funds to local charities and some fund various community improvement projects, such as restoration, landscaping improvements, new signage and more. During Modernism Week events in more than $317,000 was generated from tours of neighborhood organizations. Local non-profit and civic organizations, that benefitted include: the Office of Emergency Management of the Palm Springs Fire Department (funds will be used to purchase emergency supplies for the disaster container), Palm Springs Animal Shelter, Palm Springs Modern Committee Education fund, Palm Springs Police Department (fund will be used to purchase five tactical vests), Safe Schools of the Desert, Well in the Desert, and several other organizations. We are elated that Modernism Week can offer an opportunity for neighborhood organizations to raise funds that they use for civic improvements or reinvest back into the local community, said J. Chris Mobley, Modernism Week Board Chairman. As Modernism Week continues to grow, the valley s tourism and international stature also grows. Tours and other events produced by partner organizations not only provide them with the ability to quickly raise funds, but also allows them to showcase their neighborhood to international tourists. In addition to working with neighborhoods, Modernism Week, a 501 (c) 3 non-profit organization also helps various local organizations raise funds to further support their efforts to preserve and promote modernist architecture throughout the community. Ticket proceeds for official Modernism Week events these organizations produced in generated funds in excess of $470,000. The participating organizations included Friends of the Palm Springs Library, Palm Springs Art Museum s Architecture and Design Center, Palm Springs Preservation Foundation, Palm Springs Modern Committee, Palm Springs Historical Society, Seathletes, The Aluminaire Foundation, Volunteer Palm Springs, and Mizell Senior Center. Modernism Week also awarded two new scholarships for aspiring architectural students. Modernism Week provides annual renewable 4-year scholarships to local Coachella Valley students who have chosen educational paths in the fields of architecture and design. Two scholarships, totaling $10,000, were awarded to deserving students in 2017, which includes matching funds from One Future Coachella Valley. Since the Modernism Week renewable 4-year scholarship program was initiated in 2011, a total of $39,000 has been awarded.

32 Modernism Week 2017 Helps Local Organizations Raise Funds - continued Giving back to the community is one of the most important aspects of Modernism Week, said Lisa Vossler Smith, Executive Director. Our Board of Directors is committed to partnering with community organizations to provide the opportunities to generate revenue through event ticket sales, and we are especially pleased to award two scholarships to deserving students. These are just a few of the many ways that Modernism Week contributes to the local community. Modernism Week celebrates midcentury modern design, architecture, art, fashion and culture in the greater Palm Springs area with two valley-wide events each year; one in October and one in February. The February 2017 event had 97,000 attendees, and generated an estimated $35.5 million in revenue for area hotels, shops, restaurants, and other local businesses from Palm Springs to Indian Wells and beyond. Later this year, Modernism Week will offer its annual Fall Preview from October 19-22, 2017 (tickets go on sale August 1 at 12 p.m. PST) and will stage the 2018 Modernism Week event from February 15-25, 2018 (tickets go on sale November 1 at 12 p.m. PST). Our exhibitors reported increased sales and their enthusiasm for the increased traffic was amazing. Additional Modernism Week educational programs included several West Coast film premiers, and panels about architectural preservation and renovation. Educational outreach has always been a core element of Modernism Week programming, and trend continued this year with a special series of talks and films on the topic of Mexico City Modern. A series of four presentations was conducted by leading luminaries on the subject, and a Modernism Week-produced trip to Mexico City will be held later this spring.
