10 Tower of Madrid Plaza de España Madrid The Torre de Madrid is one of the tallest buildings in Madrid It measures 142 metres in height, has 36 floors and was constructed between 1954 and 1957 It was designed by the architects Julián and José María Otamendi Machimbarrena as an assignment of the Metropolitan Real Estate Agency, for whom already they had built the Edificio España 1957 Julio Otamendi Nazar 10

13 Prado Museum Extension Paseo del Prado s/n Madrid The new site for the extension of the Prado Museum included the Jéronimos Cloister, its surrounding perimeter, and the area between the back of the Museum and the Ruiz de Alarcón Street The only decorative element on the otherwise simple, plain facade of brick, glass and stone, with its two story portico of fluted pillars, is a set of massive bronze doors by the artist Cristina Iglesias 2007 Rafael Moneo Nazar 13

14 Telefónica Building Calle Gran Vía Madrid The Telefónica Building was designed by Ignacio de Cárdenas, who conceived it after a previous study of Lewis S Weeks in Manhattan Even though the building is of American inspiration, Cárdenas touch can be felt in its churrigueresque exterior ornamentation, a nod to Madrid Baroque architecture Its construction started in 1926 and it was fully completed in March 1929, despite opening its doors officially on 1 January 1930 The workforce was composed of more than 1000 workers and the final cost added up to 32 million pesetas It became one of the first skyscrapers in Europe Nazar 14

15 Mercado Municipal de Barcelo Calle Barceló Madrid The Barceló Market area in Madrid includes public spaces, temporary buildings, and installations belonging to a same complex Its multiple denomination -market/sports center/library- speaks of collective engagement and reveals the social condition of the program: a compact market topped by a sports pavilion framing the city, in front of which a cantilevered library rises above a schoolyard In this way the desinger assumed the coexistence of three simultaneous conceptions (container, frame, bridge) that address structural variations (space frame, cantilever, beam) and generate different civic spaces: a covered street, an elongated plaza, and a raised terrace In this combinatorial matrix a balance of functional needs, structural systems, and urban spaces resides the dense and hybrid condition that characterizes the project 2014 Nieto Sobejano Arquitectos Nazar 15

16 Edificio España Calle de la Princesa Madrid The Edificio España is the 14th tallest building in Madrid, and one of the city's most iconic buildings It is an example of 20th-century Spanish architecture built in the neo-baroque style It was designed by architect Julián Otamendi and his brother in the Neo-baroque style and constructed from 1948 to 1953 It was a "symbol of prosperity" during the decades of Francisco Franco's In the near future, the plans are to use the building for a large hotel and apartments 1953 Main designer, Julian Otamendi Joaquin Otamendi Nazar 16
