6 photo: Mieke Vullings photo: Mieke Vullings El Mirador de Sanchinarro Calle Princesa de Éboli Madrid This 22 level building, called Mirador, is located in Sanchinarro, a residential suburb on the north east edge of Madrid surrounded by highways and with views towards the Guadarrama Mountains The most impressive element of the building is the incredible gap of it shape, which acts as a frame for the distant landscape The large communal plaza and lookout at 40 m above the ground is meant to be used by the neighborhood as a meeting area and playground The Mirador contains a wide variety of compact housing types, in total 156 units The architects created a distinctive silhouette by grouping nine blocks The articulation of these blocks is apparent in the exterior palette, equal parts stone, concrete and tile The strips of red indicate the corridors The way the nine blocks are stacked and glued together, they make up a new towering impressive 'superblock' (MVRDV) Blanca Lleó asociados from Madrid were responsible for directing the works Project is not public! 10 photo: Alfonso Herranz photo: Alfonso Herranz Meeting Bar At Plaza Castilla Plaza Castilla Madrid In the neighbourhood of Tetuán, Madrid, in Studio Banana, Garcia and Losada had the opportunity to work on a project in the area through a private client They knew the neighbourhood perfectly: its character, the calm atmosphere, centrality, presence of art workshops, etc Despite changes in recent years, the character of the neighbourhood remains for its residents Tetuán is a district with a lot of architectural contrast Between 1917 and 1926 this area was known for the economical house These homes there are still in the memory in the neighbourhood Neighbours Dori and her husband, Mary and Manolo, etc have taught to enjoy the experiences and traditions that remain in the neighborhood What if we contemporize the traditions in Tetuán by building a space for social use? 13 photo: José F García Martín photo: José F García Martín Villaverde Social Housing Calle del Berrocal Madrid This project is located in a new development area in the Villaverde district of southern Madrid Comprised of 176 one-, two-, and three-bedroom apartments, it responds to an overall masterplan for the site which requested a single U-shaped block of eight storeys high and which has the appearance of a pitched roof Within the confines of this brief, the design attempted to manipulate these architectural restrictions so as to abstract the normative idea of an apartment block So whereas other neighbouring buildings adopt a symmetrical, double-pitched silhouette, here the traditional relationships of wall and roof are abstracted into a low, single pitch for the bulk of the block, and a small secondary pitch at the building s front edge The materials chosen are earthy-pink concrete for the façade panels and slate-blue concrete for the courtyard portico A dense band of landscaping is located in between, to reach the effect of a rich panel of colours radiating outwards photo: José F García Martín Project is not public! 20 photo: Miguel de Guzman photo: Miguel de Guzman Kiosk Avenida Felipe II Madrid In December 2006, 100 kiosks produced by kiosk-maker Primur were installed by the city of Madrid throughout three different handicraft markets They are used during several types of temporary festivities and the open markets through the city These kiosks are made of naturally rusted steel plates The archetypical shape and uniform materialisation makes it look like a very minimalist house The combination of several houses in one square resembles a small village When the kiosk is opened, it transforms into a house with a chimney : the front side is elevated above the roof Different houses are lighted in different colours The lighting gives it another feature: an illuminated publication sign advertising its content, full of surprises photo: Miguel de Guzman Brut Deluxe Primur MI_MOA 20
