2 Angel Building is the re-invention of an unloved early 1980 s commercial building located on one of London s historic focal points where City Road and St. John Street meet Pentonville Road and the bustling Islington High Street.

3 A Reinvented Building

4 A Recycled Frame The existing concrete frame has been re-used and wrapped with a highly energy-efficient glazed skin. This recycled frame also allowed an additional storey and reduced the waste associated with full demolition. Over 100,000 sq ft was added by a series of vertical and horizontal extensions. 5 Re-Clad The new energy efficient skin utilises oversized curtain walling, with three metre wide operable windows. The new façade is extended to rehabilitate the former broken street edge by replicating the gentle curve of St. John Street. This precisely articulated cladding design and its scale and generosity were influenced by some of the great 1950 s buildings in American cities.

6 Re-landscaped & Re-sited in the City On St. John Street & Pentonville Road a newly landscaped public realm is set around existing mature trees. The introduction of shops and restaurants will bring activity to this important frontage in the heart of Islington.

8 A New Entrance

9 A Public Room A forgotten service courtyard has been transformed into a grand top-lit public room complete with break-out areas and a café. A fair-faced cast in-situ concrete frame with simple glazed metal screens expresses the primary materiality, with elegant expanses of terrazzo flooring. The space has now become the heart of the building, offering a variety of spaces to convene, dine and repose. Before: 1980 s courtyard

12 Retail Over 15,000 sq ft of retail space is created either side of the main entrance facing onto the new public space on St. John Street. This adds further activity and commercial opportunities to this once dreary and unloved space. Cancer Research UK has pre-let the building taking c.125,000 sq ft which enabled the project team to closely tailor the building to the needs of this world-leading charity.

13 Art The building contains a number of site specific commissioned pieces of art, including Epic by Teresita Fernandez and Out of the Strong Came forth Sweetness by Ian McChesney as well as numerous bespoke photographic based compositions.

15 21st Century Office The office space has been designed to capitalise on the large, 6m glazed bays which provide deep natural light penetration and are supplemented with an intelligent low energy DALI lighting system. Temperature is controlled via low velocity, under floor displacement which liberates the office space from internal ductwork and low ceilings. The project has been awarded a BREEAM Excellent rating and includes a number of sustainable strategies including rainwater harvesting, biomass boilers, ultra efficient cladding, and low velocity water fittings amongst others.
