This year we assemble in Aberdeen, an ancient university city characterised by the silvery stone from which much of the historic city centre was built. It s prosperity in history was as a great trading port and a key focus of the fishing industry. In more recent decades, oil has done much to transform the character and invigorate the economy of this city of learning, industry and shimmering granite. Our two days of discussion and debate feature an inspiring range of speakers, local and international. The RIAS is grateful for the generous sponsorship from Denfind Stone, Gartcarron Fire Engineering and SureCav for this year s Convention. Thursday 10th May sporting excellence The Belmont Picturehouse, 49 Belmont Street, Aberdeen. Noon 5.00pm, price includes buffet lunch and refreshments. RIAS Member VAT ( 72.00) Non-member VAT ( ) RIAS Concessionary * VAT ( 36.00) * Concessionary rate applies to RIAS student/retired and hardship membership classes The first half day of the Convention considers the architecture of sport, bringing together an historic Olympics (Barcelona 1992) with this year s London event and a look forward to Glasgow s Commonwealth Games in A more local exemplar, the Aberdeen Regional Sports Village, is also included in this rich mix of sporting excellence. City Design Adviser. Gerry, a graduate of the Mackintosh School, has been tasked with achieving design excellence in all future physical development for the city. Gerry is currently assisting Glasgow s delivery of the 2014 Commonwealth Games. He has recently become an Honorary Professor at Glasgow School of Art, and has been instrumental in setting up the Glasgow Urban Laboratory a collaboration between the City Council and The Mack to examine real issues affecting Glasgow and put the city at the forefront of regeneration research. A member of the Academy of Urbanism since its inception in 2005 he recently led Glasgow s successful bid to become European City of the Year. Aberdeen Sports Village James Grimley RIAS reiach and hall Jim joined Reiach and Hall as a technician in May In 1991 he left to train as an architect at the Mackintosh School. He re-joined Reiach and Hall in May 2000, where he is currently an Associate Director. Jim has been a visiting tutor and critic in a number of schools of architecture. He is currently designing three new health centres in Lanarkshire and a group of new sports studios. His focus throughout has been on the experience of those who are lucky enough to get tickets for the Games, as well as an estimated television audience of four billion. His work has been focussed upon holding true to the ideals of the Olympic movement but pragmatically ensuring that the Olympic Park and many of its buildings will be a permanent legacy for UK sport.
