1 Oxford Summer School Future Cities addressing the complex issues that affect our cities 19 to 23 September 2011 St Anne s College, Oxford University, Woodstock Road, Oxford OX2 6HS, UK Plan Design Enable

2 Welcome to the Summer School Cities are now recognised as the central catalyst for growth and development in countries around the world. Rapid urbanisation, the need to attract skilled workers for prosperous economies, and the city s role as a hub for trade and tourism have all encouraged the concept of the city as an opportunity, rather than a challenge. As cities grow and change, their planning and management becomes pivotal to future success. Issues such as environmental risk, congestion and the changing needs of society have the potential to undermine urban quality of life, leading to a gap between the aspirations of increasingly affluent communities and the reality of day-to-day city living. This conference aims to address such issues head-on, combining proven experience with the latest thinking on practical solutions for successful future cities. Richard Alvey is the international cities director at Atkins. He has led on multidiscipline, international and high profile design projects in over 20 countries, including the UK, China, India and the Middle East. Currently he is design leader for the preparation of a comprehensive strategy for the expansion of Suhar the second city in Oman and a 5000ha mixed-use urban expansion for Nairobi, Kenya.
