2 Introduction Co-hosted by Willie Watt PRIAS and incoming President, Stewart Henderson, the RIAS Convention, the single most significant event in the Incorporation s annual calendar, is also one of the largest architectural conferences in Europe. The Convention is peripatetic, travelling round each of the Incorporation s six Chapters in turn. This year s event takes place in Stirling, within the territory covered by the Stirling Society of Architects. Our day and a half of discussion, debate, fellowship and celebration features an inspiring range of speakers, local and international. This year s main Convention day will take place at the Engine Shed, Historic Environment Scotland s (HES) brand new building conservation hub, which is set to open soon. The Convention is the first major event to take place in this new venue. We are very grateful to HES. The multi-million pound project has transformed a disused, former military building in Stirling s Forthside area, right across the pedestrian bridge from Stirling Railway Station. The new facility will encourage people to engage with and explore Scotland s rich built heritage, as well as the traditional skills that helped create it, for themselves. The Engine Shed sees the bringing together of cutting-edge conservation science, digital documentation work and innovative practice with centuries-old skills and traditions. It demonstrates the important role that both contemporary and traditional practice plays in the future of building conservation in Scotland and internationally. The new centre is designed to create and deliver educational resources and training on traditional buildings, skills and materials for those in the industry. It will also be a fun and inspiring space for schools, local people and visitors to explore their built heritage through activities, exhibitions, workshops and a jam-packed events programme. Speakers will include Sonia Watson, Chief Executive of the Stephen Lawrence Trust who will talk us through some case studies which enabled young people to follow their dreams of studying architecture. RIAS Honorary Fellow, Ian Ritchie CBE will be in conversation with RIAS Past President, Professor Sir James Dunbar-Nasmith on their shared and individual experiences in the fields of theatre and auditoria. 5 Speakers Petter Bergerud The University of Bergen / Fortunen AS Bill Cairns ICOE Research Ltd Karen Cook AIA PLP Architecture Sir James Dunbar- Nasmith PPRIAS Hugh Dutton Hon FRIAS Hugh Dutton Associés Cristina Garcia Kohn Pedersen Fox Associates Architect, Professor at The University of Bergen, partner in Fortunen AS and author of the Bergen Pavilion at the Festival of Architecture 2016 Cities Expo (115,000 visitors in one month). Petter has written several books and delivered lectures, keynote speeches, workshops and exhibitions in Europe, Latin America, Africa and Asia. Petter s special fields of interest include spatial experiments that have resulted in wooden projects (as will be presented in his talk), lightweight and tensile structures and amazing ice structures. An international strategic planner and environmental practitioner with over 40 years oil and gas industry experience, William (Bill) Cairns is a Former President of the International Professional Association for Environmental Affairs, Brussels and as Rapporteur General at the World Congress in Planning, Warsaw. Bill has delivered over 750 planning, environment and development projects including environmental and infrastructure planning for Kazakhstan offshore developments for KMG and the World Bank. Other major projects include the Flotta and Sullom Voe Terminals, RNAD Coulport and the multi awardwinning Megget Reservoir, Scottish Borders. He is a government advisor, author and visiting professor. Karen Cook, one of the five founding partners of PLP Architecture, was previously a partner at KPF, whose London office she joined at its founding in While at KPF, Karen was the designer of several important office structures, including the City of London s tallest building, The Pinnacle and, in Paris, Tour First (CB31), France s tallest office building. Karen s experience extends throughout Europe. Key elements of her work focus on environmentally sustainable design, aligned to her philosophy of integrating design and technology in making better places to work and live. At ninety (his birthday was mid-march) James remains a keen and sharp observer of Scottish and international architecture. His own work on two of the best known theatres in Scotland has created a powerful legacy at both Eden Court, Inverness and at Pitlochry, where the Festival Theatre is still the town s cultural and tourism fulcrum. After working with Leslie Grahame Thomson, James joined Robert Matthew s firm in April In 1957, he and Graham Law went into partnership in Edinburgh. James was subsequently Professor of Architecture at Edinburgh College of Art. All those who know Sir James and have been taught by him commend his fundamental decency, his good humour, his tolerance and his often sparkling wit. We are delighted that Hugh has agreed to re-visit the RIAS Convention to update us on his ever expanding portfolio. Hugh is principal of Hugh Dutton Associates (HDA) based in Paris and specialising in glass and lightweight architectural structures. HDA s past work includes the new roof for the Islamic Arts collection in the Louvre, Paris, a footbridge for the 2004 Olympic games and facades at Changi Airport, Singapore. The studio is particularly active in Asia, with ongoing work in Hong Kong and mainland China. Cristina Garcia is a Principal at the international architecture practice Kohn Pedersen Fox Associates. Since joining the firm in 1996, she has led large-scale projects in the UK, Europe, and Asia, including the new RWTH Aachen University Photonics Research masterplan in Germany and the award-winning Endesa headquarters in Madrid. Her work focuses on issues of density and building types within the design of sustainable cities. Ellen van Loon OMA Dr David Mitchell Director of Conservation, Historic Environment Scotland Ian Ritchie CBE RA RIBA Hon FRIAS Hon FAIA Ian Ritchie Architects Ian Ritchie is director of Ian Ritchie Architects, poet, artist, Fellow of the Society of Façade Engineering, Royal Academician and member of the Akademie der Künste. He is Special Visiting Professor at Liverpool University and advises The Ove Arup Foundation, Backstage Trust and is a Governor of the RSC. Ian has chaired international juries, received major innovation awards and written several books. Several international museums hold his art. Tommy Thomson RIAS Stirling Society of Architects Sonia Watson Hon FRIBA The Stephen Lawrence Trust Ellen van Loon joined OMA in 1998 and has led several award-winning building projects. Some of her most significant contributions include the new G-Star Headquarters in Amsterdam (2014); De Rotterdam, the largest building in the Netherlands (2013) and the Dutch Embassy in Berlin (2003), winner of the European Union Mies van der Rohe award in Ellen is currently working on the Factory, a large performing arts venue for Manchester; a new building for Brighton College and the home of the Danish Architecture Center in Copenhagen. David has been active in the fields of traditional skills and materials, and digital documentation for several years, and has a particular interest in industrial heritage and Scottish architectural iron founding. Between April 2016 and September 2016, he took on the role of acting CEO for Historic Environment Scotland (HES). Tommy, the one time UK, under 15s, high jump record holder (1.95 metres), subsequently trained at the Mackintosh School in the late seventies and has worked in the Stirling area for most of his career. He has served as principal of TBB architecture for more than 25 years, carrying out a broad range of commercial and residential projects. He is a Past President of the Stirling Society of Architects and has been extensively involved with the RIAS and the local Chapter. He lives locally in Bridge of Allan. The Stephen Lawrence Charitable Trust was set up in 1998 by Stephen s parents, Doreen and Neville. They wanted to ensure that future generations of young people would enjoy the opportunities denied to Stephen by his senseless murder. The Trust has a strong track record in delivering bursaries for students in architecture and the built environment, a fitting legacy to Stephen s memory. Sonia has been Chief Executive of the Trust since Her infectious enthusiasm is shared with all she comes into contact with. In Baroness Doreen Lawrence s words, Once you have met Sonia you will never forget her.
