RIAS The Royal Incorporation of Architects in Scotland Architectural Education in Scotland A guide for school leavers and intending students
5 6 7 This leaflet is a brief introduction to architectural education and provides information on where you can study architecture in Scotland. To learn more simply contact the Architecture Schools listed below. A Special Course There are no Higher or A-level examinations in Architecture. Therefore, as a university subject, it is new to everyone. To be a student of Architecture, you need to enjoy the challenge of learning about new concepts and thinking about familiar concepts in new ways. Architecture is not only about buildings. Builders can transform clients ideas into reality and under the instruction of a creative Architect, they can achieve a result which goes beyond mere building and becomes truly inspirational. Architecture then is a profession for imaginative individuals; but it is also for practical individuals. Buildings require to stand up, serve their functions and contribute to their environment appropriately in social and ecological terms. In particular, architecture is an exciting profession for inspired people who would like to make a difference to the way people live. These principles apply to the smallest domestic building or the largest scale urban project. Dedicated Study There are no shortcuts to becoming an Architect. Typically you will require five years of academic study (Parts 1 and 2) before obtaining full time employment and another two years minimum before you gain professional registration (Part 3). Students of architecture enjoy learning, and this enquiring mindset and the broad educational base of the course is highly valued
by society. In a time of great social and economic change society needs Architects with vision, capable of transforming the lives of others in a positive way. Theory, Practice and Vision Once you ve been accepted onto one of the Scottish architectural courses you will follow three general threads: artistic, scientific and cultural. In any week, you will be actively involved in the process of Architectural Design the main activity at the drawingboard, in the workshop or using computers; you ll be attending lectures, tutorials and practical workshop sessions in Technology, Environment and Architectural History. In subsequent years, your timetable might change, but these three threads remain unbroken. The entire planet is your chosen field of study and confirms architecture as a uniquely challenging subject where you can make your own exciting personal contribution for the benefit of future generations. James Miller Student Award The James Miller Student Award exists to support architecture students from the Scottish Schools of Architecture who are studying in full or part time education on an approved course. The Award is designed to assist students who are facing hardship issues which affect their ability to complete all or part of their course. Students will be able to use the money to purchase any support necessary such as books, equipment or to assist with field trips. Entry for the award requires the completion of the award application form, accompanied by a letter of support from the Head of Architecture Department or Practical Studies Advisor at the University and a completed RIAS Student membership application form. For further information contact: James Miller Student Award c/o The Secretary The Royal Incorporation of Architects in Scotland 15 Rutland Square Edinburgh EH1 2BE or nbaxter@rias.org.uk
Aberdeen Scott Sutherland School of Architecture and Built Environment Robert Gordon University, Garthdee Road, Aberdeen AB10 7QB +44 (0) The Granite City of Aberdeen is world renowned for its remarkable architecture, epitomised by the impressive, neo-gothic Marischal College. The city s medieval heart and new town are linked by Union Street, a mile long, neoclassical, bridged street. Aberdeen is also a dynamic European hub for the global energy industry. Dundee University of Dundee Department of Architecture Perth Road Dundee DD1 4HT +44 (0) The Scott Sutherland School is situated in a beautiful parkland campus on the banks of the river Dee. It was one of the first three centres of architectural education in the United Kingdom to be accredited by the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA). For the last decade it has been a multi-disciplinary school, reflecting the collaborative nature of architectural practice, design and construction. The UK s most northerly School of Architecture draws upon Aberdeen s rich and diverse landscape and culture. This is balanced with expertise in sustainable design and visiting professionals from all relevant disciplines, giving a course with a strong sense of contemporary relevance. For more information, contact Neil Lamb (n.lamb@rgu.ac.uk). Architecture at Dundee University is uniquely situated in an art school but is also part of a new School of the Environment, linking Planning and Geography. This situation and linkage places a strong emphasis on students developing informed and creative reponses at the interface of the natural and built environments.
Dundee combines the most appealing aspects of Edinburgh and Glasgow within a small city of high cultural impact. This was one reason why London s V&A Museum chose to collaborate with the City and University, to build a satellite Design Centre designed by the Japanese architect Kengo Kuma. Set on the waterfront between the city centre and close to the Dundee University campus this linkage will be of particular benefit to the School of Architecture. For more information, contact Cameron Wilson (c.m.wilson@dundee.ac.uk). For information on Open Days, visit: Edinburgh Edinburgh School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture (ESALA) University of Edinburgh 20 Chambers Street Edinburgh EH1 1JZ and Lauriston Place Edinburgh EH3 9DF +44 (0) (Programme Queries) Professional programmes in Architecture are based at two campuses, in the University s new Edinburgh College of Art in Chambers Street and at Lauriston Place. Facilities include design studios, extensive workshops, excellent libraries, continually upgraded computer facilities and dedicated rooms for research students. The City of Edinburgh is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and offers a rich and dramatic context in which to study architecture. The distinctive character of the School, established through a merger of the University with Edinburgh College of Art in 2011, draws upon the international reputations of a major, research-intensive, University and an historic multi-disciplinary Art School.
Validated degree programmes at both ARB/ RIBA Part 1 and Part 2 offer flexible pathways for the student. In addition, there are nonaccredited degrees in Architectural History and Architecture in Creative and Cultural Environments. For more information contact Admissions, University of Edinburgh College of Humanities and Social Science, +44 (0) (hssug@ed.ac.uk) Glasgow Scotland s largest city dates back to the 11th Century. However much of the city centre was built during the Victorian era and little is left from the Medieval and Georgian phases of Glasgow s evolution. The extraordinary variety of buildings in both the city centre and the West End draw their inspiration from throughout Europe and indeed much further afield. Visitors to Glasgow can experience not merely eight centuries of Architecture but a world tour of building styles. Mackintosh School of Architecture Glasgow School of Art 167 Renfrew Street Glasgow G3 6RQ +44 (0) The appropriately named Mackintosh School is set alongside Charles Rennie Mackintosh s masterpiece, The Glasgow School of Art. The Mac has a well established reputation for its lively teaching programme driven by a focus on what architecture can contribute to enhance people s everyday lives. This is underpinned by a studio programme which involves many enthusiastic practitioners and teaching which endeavours to be consistently inspired and inspiring.
For more information, contact Alan Hooper, Undergraduate Programme Leader University of Strathclyde Department of Architecture 131 Rottenrow Glasgow G4 0NG +44 (0) The Strathclyde School sits amid the busy and attractive Strathclyde University campus. The Department of Architecture at Strathclyde University is student-centred, design-focussed and socially-informed with strong links to the city of Glasgow and the wider community. It hosts the largest and most vibrant international exchange programme of any UK school of Architecture. Its integrated holistic curriculum characterises its Architecture and urban design courses and is informed by the Department s ethos of thinking and making.
