THE NORTHERN ARCHITECTURAL HISTORY SOCIETY The Society was established in the 1970s. It aims to encourage the study and enjoyment of architecture, buildings, their contents and settings by organising lectures and visits. It usually holds its lectures in Newcastle upon Tyne and enjoys a close association with the School of Architecture, Planning and Landscape of Newcastle University. THE LECTURE THEATRE Unless otherwise stated lectures are held in the Fine Art Lecture Theatre of Newcastle University. The location is marked by the blue oval. Doors open at 7.00pm, refreshments are usually available, and lectures start at 7.30pm. Disabled parking and easy access to the lecture theatre is available adjacent to the taxi bay and security cabin on Kings Road. St George s Church, Buxton Road, Heavily, Stockport, Cheshire. A major work by Architect Hubert Austin of Austin and Paley. Built Geoffrey Brandwood will talk about this practice in March.
Opening Scottish Country Houses to Visitors Lecturer: Ian Gow Wednesday 17 October 2018 In 1936 when the NTS Country House Scheme was founded, only two Scottish houses were open regularly, Abbotsford and Cawdor, both for their literary associations. Ian Gow will discuss owners attitudes and the history of opening private Scottish houses to visitors with particular reference to the NTS Country House Scheme and its English counterpart, and Northumberland s crucial role in this with the gift of Wallington to the National Trust. The talk anticipates the lecturer s contribution to The Country House Past Present and Future: Great Houses of the British Isles edited by David Cannadine and Jeremy Musson. Which is to be published by Rizzoli International New York later this year. Our lecturer Ian Gow is the retired Chief Curator of the National Trust for Scotland. The Protected Vista Lecturer: Tom Brigden Wednesday 14 November 2018 Our lecturer is currently working on a book project for the Royal Institute of British Architects which unpicks the history of the idea of the protected vista in urban planning policy, in particular the protection of views of St. Paul s Cathedral, London and the celebrated view from Richmond Hill. Tom s research traces the origins of current policy in the eighteenth century aesthetic convention of the picturesque, via its various guises in landscape art, architecture, urban design and the townscape movement of the 1960s. He is a Leverhulme Fellow at the University of Newcastle and a practising conservation architect, having worked between offices in York, England and Melbourne, Australia.
An Evening at Wallington Hall Christmas Event Organiser: Hugh Dixon Tuesday 11 December 2018 This will be a spectacular venue for our event and a great opportunity to see the Hall at night. Our evening will take the usual format of talk and tour, and a buffet followed by an art and architecture quiz. Further details will be circulated to the membership in due course. A coach will be offered from Newcastle City Centre. Members Evening of Short Talks Organiser: Hugh Dixon Wednesday 16 January 2019 We experimented successfully last year with an alternative to a full lecture. This evening is devoted to short talks giving members an opportunity to address favourite subjects, share enthusiasms, outline early research or simply fly architectural-historical kites. So far topics range from the 18th century to our own times, from vernacular to highly formal and to the unexpected. If you have a concise tailpiece to get off your chest, it may not be too late. Contact Hugh Dixon E mail: hughdixon7@gmail.com This evening will be what members make it; please don t be shy.
Lecture to be onfirmed February 2019 Historic Mills in the North of England Lecturer: Duncan Hutt Wednesday 20 March 2019 There were once hundreds of watermills across the northern counties of England as well as a lesser number of windmills. They carried out a wide range of industrial tasks from corn milling to cloth weaving - anything requiring power. With developments in 19th century agriculture, many local farms also embraced water power to drive the agricultural revolution of the time. In this lecture Duncan will explore the history and development of water and wind power across the region concentrating on a few local examples to illustrate the changes that have occurred over centuries of renewable power use until its demise in the 20th century.
The Buildings of Sunderland Lecturer: Dr Michael Johnson Wednesday 24 April 2019 From its origins as an early monastic settlement to its industrial achievement as the largest shipbuilding town in the world, Sunderland has amassed a surprisingly rich architectural heritage. This lecture examines the architecture of Sunderland by analysing a selection of its most notable structures, ranging from the Saxon church of St Peter, heavily restored by R.J. Johnson, to the controversial Civic Centre and the modern Stadium of Light. Architectural historian Dr Michael Johnson of Northumbria University guides us on a virtual tour of the city s finest historic buildings and modern architectural statements. The churches, theatres, pubs and cinemas of Sunderland s industrial heyday are examined alongside the innovative buildings of the 21st Century. NAHS SUMMER TRIP 2019 The Eastern Counties of Northern Ireland Organisers: Hugh Dixon and Ian Wells This will be our second trip to Northern Ireland. Back in 2010 we visited the western counties. This time we will travel to the counties of Antrim and Down. Hugh spent many years in Northern Ireland as an Architectural Historian, is author of An Introduction to Ulster Architecture and is a member of the Ulster Architectural Heritage Society. We can rely on him to develop a fascinating itinerary.
