photo: Markus Tretter photo: Markus Tretter Kunsthaus Bregenz Square Karl Tizian Platz Bregenz Austria The shiny black building (an anthracite surface) in front of the KUB houses both the shop and a café-bar on the ground floor, in addition to administration offices and the library on the first floor This administration building, situated in front of the museum towards the city centre, acts as a transitional structure to the smaller and low buildings of the old part of the town All functional facilities of the Kunsthaus other than those directly associated with the presentation of art are housed separately in this smaller building Not only the whole of the café and bar area bears the architectural signature of Peter Zumthor; the kitchen is also designed in exposed black concrete as well as the black square in front of the café, where visitors to the KUB Café prefer to sit at the round tables when the weather is good At night, the café turns into a classic cocktail bar Often the current exhibition includes open-air events photo: Markus Tretter Floor area/size m², Interior architect, Landscape architect Peter Zumthor MI_MOA Kunsthaus Bregenz Cafe-bar: from 1000 am to 100 am daily Shop: 1100 am to 600 pm daily, closed Mondays 5

photo: Marloes Faber photo: Marloes Faber Church San Benedetg Caplutta Sogn Benedetg Sumvitg Switzerland This Zumthor church in a small village located in the Mountains is a cylinder that turns into an oval and then into a keel: the geometry of this church, however definite, is also dynamic and elusive to the eye, all this exacerbated by the implantation of the building on a steep slope The church has a wooden construction and the façade is made with wooden shingles, wooden snips, similar to the locally build houses The building is very carefully detailed even on places you would normally not come (like behind the concrete stairs of the entrance) The setting is wonderful 1988 Peter Zumthor City of Sumvitg Marloes_Faber photo: Marloes Faber You can visit the church daily apart from Sunday Take the car to Sumvitg in the canton of Graubünden In this village is one road up to San Benedigt (different ways to write) It's about a km tough climbing for the car In San Benedigt it is easy to find your way to the church 6

photo: Archivio Fuksas photo: Archivio Fuksas New Trade Fair Strada Statale 33 del Sempione Milan Italy The New Trade Fair is not only a big project for the Milan region its dimensions make it one of the biggest buildings in Europe Massimiliano Fuksas conceived the site on the outskirts of the city as a new landscape with its own geography The project is structured by a central axis that connects the service centres, offices and the exhibition halls The whole complex is covered by a vast roof - an undulating lightweight structure, with a surface area exceeding square metres, over 1300 metres long and approximately 32 metres wide Made up of a reticular rhomboidal mesh structure in prefinished steel profiles, it is connected via spherical nodes and covered with laminated glass attached via plates to the profiles below It is supported by 183 steel columns 500 mm in diameter which branch into smaller supporting arms above 12 metres Fuksas derived the form from constant altimetric variations as found in the natural landscape in the form of 'craters', 'waves' and 'dunes' 2005 Main designer, Supplier Contractor Supplier Supplier Associate architect Supplier Structural engineer Supplier Contractor Associate architect Building physics consultant Technical engineer Contractor Massimiliano and Doriana Fuksas Doriana O Fuksas Ask Romein Astaldi Spa Bemo Systems Carpentieri d'italia Giorgio Martocchia Icom Engineering Mero GmbH & Co Permasteelisa Spa Pizzarotti Spa Ralf Bock Schlaich, Bergermann und Partner Studio Marzullo Srl Vianini Spa Fondazione Fiera Milano Kirsten_Hannema photo: Archivio Fuksas Located in Rho-Pero (on the northwestern outskirts of Milan), along highway SS33 7

photo: Marloes Faber photo: Nazar Leskiw Duca di Milano Hotel Piazza della Repubblica Milan Italy Designed by postmodernist Aldo Rossi, the Duca di Milano Hotel operates as an annex of the Principe di Savoia Hotel, with which it is linked by a skybridge The façade of Rossi's hotel is made up of red brick and has a linear pattern of windows on a plain surface This stands in stark contrast to its mother building, which has a traditional façade with an abundance of ornaments The interior of the Duca di Milano is more confluent with the Principe's style: the units in the annex are ablaze with regal red fabrics, padded walls, valanced windows, sitting areas, and generous desks that match the Edwardian look of the antique dressers 1988 Aldo Rossi Marloes_Faber photo: Nazar Leskiw 9

photo: Marloes Faber photo: Marloes Faber Gallaratese II Housing Via Enrico Falck 37 Milan Italy Located in the city of Milan, the Gallaratese II housing complex has the capacity to house 2400 inhabitants Aldo Rossi designed the complex at the 'Gallaratese Quarter II' to be a self-contained village which was even dubbed a 'Palais social' by its tenants This coordinates with Rossi s philosophy of architecture His view that the primary sources of all architectural content lie in the school, the hospital and the prison is reflected in the use of primary forms, axial orientation and repetitive elements in the façades Gallaratese II is designed with two apparent axes: north-south and east-west These indicate the primary circulation routes of the building as well as guiding the relationships between the building and the rest of the quarter (from website University of Colorado Denver) photo: Marloes Faber Public access unknown! 1970 Aldo Rossi Marloes_Faber 'Bonola' is the nearest underground station The gate to the complex is not always opened 10

photo: Marloes Faber photo: Marloes Faber Velasca Tower Piazza Velasca Milan Italy Close to Milan's city centre, looking up, one can notice the presence of an outstanding profile: it is the outline of Torre Velasca, whose symbolic value one is able to guess from a distance The building was designed in the 1950s by a group of Milanese architects called BBPR after their names: Banfi, Belgiojoso, Peressutti and Rogers The Velasca Tower belongs to the first generation of Italian modern architecture, nevertheless keeping itself linked to the Milanese context in which it was born, and relating itself particularly to the cathedral, the city's bell towers and above all to the Sforzesco Castle The tower, with its characteristic 'mushroom' shape and height of 99 metres, sticks out into the city centre skyline, made up of buildings, domes, towers and bell towers Its structure recalls the Lombard tradition of the massive profile of towers and medieval fortresses photo: Benjo Zwarteveen Project is not public! 12 photo: Marloes Faber photo: Marloes Faber Pirelli tower Piazza Duca d'aosta Milan Italy In 1950 Alberto Pirelli, the president of the Pirelli Company, required that a skyscraper be built in the original area where the first factory was constructed in the 19th century The project was developed by architect Gio Ponti, with the assistance of Pier Luigi Nervi and Arturo Danusso At 1271 meters (417 feet), it is the tallest building in the city and was built of concrete (est 60,000 tons) Construction of the tower began in 1956 in a time that Italy was experiencing an economic boom The tower was to be surrounded by low lying buildings on a hectagonal plot of land Upon its completion in 1958, it became one of the symbols of Milan and of the national economical recovery The building was later sold to the Lombardy region, of which is now the head office Characterized by a bold, structural skeleton, smooth refined curtain wall façades, and tapered sides like the bow of a ship, it was among the first skyscrapers to abandon the customary block form Project is not public! 13 photo: Marloes Faber photo: Marloes Faber Casa del Fascio in Como Piazza del Popolo 1 Como Italy The former headquarters of the National Fascist Party in Como describes the creative spirit of Giuseppe Terragni within the context of the Italian Rationalist vocabulary It is an early testament of style, which might explain why, fifty years later, it is still the object of passionate studies It is a perfect prism with the side 3320 metres long and 1660 metres high It represents a starting point of such rigidity as to encourage a struggle against any classicist potential The square and the prism are in fact the basic principles of the purism of Le Corbusier In the building it is these principles that are being questioned because the main volume is not on 'pilotis' and the façades are not free from the structural framework In fact, they are involved with it, so as to achieve a layered depth The pulling back of the entrance and breaking up of the top make certain that the building attains transparency (from website Great Buildings Collection) photo: Marloes Faber 1936 Giuseppe Terragni National Fascist Party Marloes_Faber To visit the building, you have to ring or send a fax in advance to the Italian Financial Police, who currently owns the building The Casa del Fascio is located in the city centre of Como Go to the duomo and there you will find the Piazza del Popolo and the building 13

photo: Jiran Kohout Architekti photo: Jiran Kohout Architekti Kunstmuseum Liechtenstein Städtle Vaduz Liechtenstein Heinrich Degelo, Meinrad Morger and Christian Kerez have created a museum of great structural complexity and discreet simplicity The closed form is a 'black box' of tinted concrete and black basalt stone River pebbles embedded in the building's exterior provide a subtle coloration, forming a link to the landscape of the Rhine Valley The hand-carved surface of the façade invites touching, and reflects the surroundings Long rows of windows open the black cube to both inside and outside Inside the Black Box is a perfect White Cube The building is clearly structured with maximum space devoted to art The visible exterior of the building corresponds almost exactly to the public exhibition spaces There are six exhibition rooms arranged around two diametrically opposed staircases The ground plan, reminiscent of a windmill's sails, enables diagonal views through the whole building (text from website museum) photo: Jiran Kohout Architekti Main designer, Christian Kerez Degelo Architekten Meinrad Morger JKA Museum: Tuesday - Sunday: / Thursday: / Closed on Mondays Café: Monday - Friday: 09:00-23:00 / Saturday - Tuesday: 09:00-18:

photo: Michael Noordam photo: Michael Noordam Chapel of Notre Dame du Haut Rue Chapelle Ronchamp France On a hill, this monumental pilgrimage church 'chapel of our lady of the height' (though on most days more frequented by architectural pilgrims than the intended variety) is a dramatic form with the contrasts of a dark roof, deep windows with coloured glass and the white-washed curved walls of rough masonry Formally and symbolically, this small building is immensely powerful and complex The heaviness of the walls and roof is misleading In Le Corbusier's words: 'The shell has been put on walls which are absurdly but practically thick Inside them however are reinforced concrete columns The shell will rest on these columns but it will not touch the wall A horizontal crack of light 10cm wide will amaze' The place is truly astounding, very impressive photo: Yoshinori Kuwahara 1955 Le Corbusier City of Ronchamp Michael_Noordam Hours for the chapel are 10-16h everyday Tél Ronchamp is a little over an hour's drive west of Basel-Mulhouse, the airport near the French/Swiss/German border From Mulhouse follow the A36 southwest to Belfort, then the N19 west to Ronchamp A steep windy road to the North is signposted to the chapel from the center of Ronchamp village 21

photo: João Morgado photo: João Morgado Paspels School Alte Domleschgergasse Paspels Switzerland Paspels school is a reinforced concrete monolith The architect did not use right angles for the outside, so although at first glance the exterior geometry seems simple, closer study reveals a chain-like reaction of slight distortions that shroud the building in an air of strangeness Inside, however each classroom on the first and second floors has two right-angled sides that make up the walls of cruciform access corridors In sum, the school can be interpreted as an exercise in the phenomenology of perception photo: João Morgado Project is not public! 34 photo: Naomi Schiphorst photo: Naomi Schiphorst Schaulager Ruchfeldstrasse 19 CH-4142 Basel Switzerland photo: Naomi Schiphorst The Schaulager ('viewing warehouse') is neither museum nor traditional warehouse It keeps the Emanuel Hoffmann collection in optimal condition and is primarily accessible for specialists: conservators, curators, researchers etc The heavy outer wall is built up in layers and its outer surface scratched, exposing the pebbles excavated on site This material is not only a visual expression of weight and storage but also, as a result of its great inertia, an essential factor in the interior climate control On one side the box is somewhat indented, creating a forecourt, so that the entrance side is visible from great distance It appears to be guarded by a small building with a gabled roof The courtyard-like space radiates urbanism and publicness Schaulager is thus not simply an anonymous box on the urban periphery, but rather a place that is active and self-confident, expanding the public dimension of the city of Basel to the south, towards the new district of Dreispitz/Münchenstein Project is not public!
