4 photo: N Bräuning photo: Ryan Taube Beyeler museum Baselstrasse Riehen The elongated building covers the whole breadth of the narrow plot of ground situated between a busy main road and a protected area of farmland It combines two contrasting motifs: long, solid walls and a light, apparently floating glass roof All the external walls are clad with red porphyry from Patagonia (Argentina) The building is supported by four 127 metre-long parallel load-bearing walls placed at intervals of about seven metres The two end façades are made of glass and look out over the park On the road side, the museum is completed by a windowless wall that protects the building and on the inside A large glass roof lets daylight into the whole building Unlike conventional top lighting, this roof allows the zenithal daylight to filter into the building s interior in its natural state instead of homogenising it and making it diffuse and milky There are also three systems with artificial light sources that illuminate the rooms when there is insufficient light from outside photo: T Dix Floor area/size m² Lighting designer Renzo Piano Arup Fondation Beyeler Marloes_Faber Museum daily 10 am to 6 pm, on Wednesdays 10 am to 8 pm New: The museum is open on all sundays and holidays The best way to reach the Fondation Beyeler is by tram no 6 (from city center and Badischer Bahnhof station), or directly by train from Basel SBB main station and Badischer Bahnhof, getting off at Riehen (train continues to Zell / Germany) From Riehen stop it is another 5 to 10 minutes walk The museum is located at the main road to the German boarder (to Lorrach) 4

5 photo: João Morgado photo: João Morgado Paspels School Alte Domleschgergasse Paspels Paspels school is a reinforced concrete monolith The architect did not use right angles for the outside, so although at first glance the exterior geometry seems simple, closer study reveals a chain-like reaction of slight distortions that shroud the building in an air of strangeness Inside, however each classroom on the first and second floors has two right-angled sides that make up the walls of cruciform access corridors In sum, the school can be interpreted as an exercise in the phenomenology of perception photo: João Morgado Project is not public! 6 photo: Maarten Helle photo: Maarten Helle Church of San Giovanni Battista S Giovanni Battista 6696 Mogno Aside from a glazed roof, this church is enveloped, inside and out, by alternating runs and blocks of grey Riveo granite and white Peccia marble both native to the region The modern marble and granite Church of San Giovanni Battista (St John the Baptist), designed by Ticinese architect Mario Botta (born 1943) is the main attraction for the little village of Mogno The church was erected between 1994 and 1996 on the site of its 350-year old predecessor, which was levelled by an avalanche in 1986 This catastrophe also claimed several of the homes in the village, although luckily no-one was injured in this event (text from Wikipedia) 1996 Mario Botta HelleBeelden photo: Maarten Helle Mogno is a village in Vallemaggia District in the canton of Ticino, 6

12 photo: David Baugh photo: David Baugh Salginatobel Bridge Road to Schuders 7228 Schiers This bridge connects the tiny village of Schuders with the rest of the world Prior to its construction, the village was often cut off in the winter The design, by the Swiss engineer Robert Maillart, was one of 19 entries in a competition, which was won primarily on price The erection of the falsework, upon which the bridge was to be mounted, began in 1929 and was completed by six men - one of whom survived a 30m fall Concreting began early in 1930; the material was mixed on site and placed by hand The bridge was completed and opened on the 18th of August that same year It immediately drew world-wide recognition for its design In the late 20th century, the structure was refurbished and recognized as a 'World Monument' by the American Society of Civil Engineers The bridge is 133m long with the widest span at around 90m, and the road deck is 90m above the floor of the gorge below Robert Maillart Canton of Graubunden davidb photo: David Baugh The bridge is open all year round and there are no tolls to pay Turn off the A28 at Schiers and follow the brown finger sign posts to 'Salginatobel Brucke' The road to the bridge outside Schiers is narrow, steep in places, single track, with passing places but it is paved with Tarmac 12

17 photo: Dina Bonefacic Mihaljek photo: Dina Bonefacic Mihaljek Actelion Business Center Hegenheimermattweg Allschwil The Business Centre is at the heart of the growing Actelion complex Its architecture is meant to offer an inspiring working environment, its forms stand for 'innovation, openness and communication' (J-P Clozel) Consisting of two floors under the ground and six floors above it, this building includes workspaces for 350 people, an auditorium and a restaurant An open steel construction provides support for cantilevered floors of different layouts, stacked atop of each other Jutting out in various directions, all the floors meet at four points that allow for vertical communication Although surface to volume ratio is large, the building incorporates many features aimed at sustainability - eg, green roofs, triple glazed glass, reactive louvers, photovoltaic cells photo: Dina Bonefacic Mihaljek Project is not public! 20 photo: Maarten Helle photo: Maarten Helle Chesa Futura Via Tinus St Moritz The Chesa Futura apartment building in the Engadin Valley fuses state-of-the-art computer design tools with centuries-old construction techniques to create an environmentally sensitive building Although its form is novel, the building is framed and clad in timber - one of the oldest and most sustainable building materials In, building in timber is particularly appropriate in that it follows indigenous architectural traditions The larch shingles will respond naturally to exposure to the elements, changing colour slowly over time to a silver-grey, and will last for a hundred years without the need for maintenance Furthermore, timber is a renewable resource; the trees absorb carbon dioxide as they grow; felling older trees reinforces the foresting practice of harvesting to encourage regeneration; and by using locally cut timber, little energy is consumed in its transportation photo: Maarten Helle 2004 Main designer, Foster & Partners Kuechel s HelleBeelden 20
