St. Gabriel s Fired-up For Reading Program Pictured with the giant dragon are students in Miss Angeletti s fifth grade class who are discovering that reading can take them anywhere they want to go. St. Gabriel Elementary School has launched an exciting reading incentive program that is designed to inspire and encourage more students to read just for fun. The reading the students are doing is non-school related reading that has not been assigned for homework. For every hour of reading a student completes, the student earns a scale to place on the twenty-seven foot long dragon that is displayed in school s hallway. The goal is to completely cover the dragon scales, which will represent the hundreds of hours the students have spent reading. When the dragon is completely covered, all the students who helped add scales to the dragon will be invited to a giant pizza party!!over the summer, volunteers helped remodel the school library and donors have given hundreds of books to help restock the library s shelves. Soup & Sandwich Brunch Holy Cross Ev. Lutheran Church is hosting a Soup & Sandwich Brunch on February 21st from 12:00 to 2:00 pm. Hope to see you there! Greene School News Family Reading Night The fourth and fifth grade students at Greene School hosted a family reading night. Each student composed a story of a family memory. Then their families sat down with the students and illustrated the story and created a book. The students also read to the parents. Treats were served and the students chose books to take home from boxes of donated books. Everyone had a great time reading. Today s readers are tomorrow s leaders. (773) $ St. Gabriel s Youth Group Night at New Fieldhouse On Friday, Feb. 12th, members of the St. Gabriel Youth Group held their first Youth Night at the new Fieldhouse at Taylor-Lauridsen Park. The evening activities included time for open-gym, co-ed basketball and volleyball, board games and a general meeting to plan future activities. At the end of the night pizza was served to everyone. The youth group is very thankful to the Park District for allowing the group to use their facilities on the second Friday night of each month. At the meeting it was decided that the Youth Group would sponsor a Blood Drive for the community on Saturday, March 6th at St. Gabriel s School Hall. The Youth Group s theme is to Make A Difference and some of the events the group has participated in recently have included: Feeding the Hungry and Sending Christmas Care Packages to the Military. Anti Drug Poster Contest State s Attorney Anita Alvarez is encouraging junior high students from throughout Cook County to submit their creative artwork for entry in the State s Attorney s annual Anti-Drug Poster Contest. Students from sixth, seventh and eighth grade can participate in the contest by designing drawings and artwork that presents positive messages and advice on how young people can say no to illegal drugs, according to Alvarez. We want to tap into the creative energies of students to help us send meaningful messages to their peers about avoiding drugs and making positive choices, Alvarez said. We encourage all junior high students to participate. Winning entries will be featured in a calendar that is published by the State s Attorney s Office and distributed to schools throughout Cook County as an anti-drug awareness tool. Past contest winners have received prizes including tickets to area water resorts and Chicago sporting events. Children enjoy reading new and exciting chapter books such as The Magic Tree House, Ready Freddy, and Junie B. Jones, while increasing comprehension, vocab ulary and fluency. The book clubs, led by their teachers, have been discussing authors purpose, drawing conclusions, summarizing stories, and identifying the theme and plot. Book club members enjoy reading in the comfortable environment which helps encourage a long lasting love of reading. St. Gabriel School Celebrates With An Irish Flair Catholic Schools Week 2010 at St. Gabriel Elementary was celebrated with the focus on service to others with an Irish flair. The students collected over $200 for Hats On For Cancer, as part of their spirit day celebration. On appreciation day the students wrote thank you letters to the many organizations and individuals who support their school & were entertained by an Irish musician and singer. On Special Person Day the school was filled with grandmas, grandpas, aunts, godparents, and many special friends who came to celebrate Mass with the students and also brought special ethnic treats to share. The students enjoyed showing-off their ethnic heritages by donning costumes & clothing that represented their family roots. On the final day of the week-long celebration, the students came dressed in their pajamas for their Cuddle Up and Read day that included enjoying pancakes and sausage for lunch that were cooked and served by many of those special people in their lives, including their teachers. Dividends for Life: Faith, Morals, Discipline, Knowledge DLS Hosts Girls Grammar School Volleyball Tournament On Sat., Jan. 16, 2010, DLS Institute held its annual 5th and 6th grade girls grammar school volleyball tournament. Teams that participated were St. Daniel s Acers, St. Daniel s Wildcats, St. Daniel s Shooting Stars, Our Lady of Guadalupe, St. Richards, St. Bruno s 6th, St. Bruno s 5th, BCA s 6th, BCA s 5th, Mark Sheridan, St. Therese and St. Gabriel. In a 2 game thriller for the title, Our Lady of Guadalupe defeated St. Daniel s Acers 25-23; All Tournament honors were earned by Maura Finnigan (St. Daniel s Shooting Stars), Karah Ritacco (St. Daniel s Acers), Jessica Leyva (St. Richard), Sofia Rodriguez (St. Bruno s 5th), Amy McCloud (St. Bruno s 6th), Jazmine Hernandez (Our Lady of Guadalupe) & MVP Erika Galan (Our Lady of Gua- dalupe) who served 10 consecutive points to help her team come from behind to win Set 1 in the championship match. Coach Marassa, Varsity volleyball coach for DLS, would like to thank the DLS volleyball players, staff & parents who volunteered their time.
