Racinowski, Editor/Manager Wally Dickman Benefit Workin 4 Wally Committee Dear Friends: On January 7, 2007, our dear friend Wally Dickman, a lifelong resident of Canaryville, suffered a severe stroke which was followed by several surgeries, including a quadruple bypass operation. As a result, Wally has been unable to work for the past 2 years, causing financial hardship for him and his wife. In an effort to ease the financial burden that has burdened upon Wally and his wife Cathy, friends and family have united together to raise money with a friendship party. Wally, a City of Chicago carpenter with the Carpenters Union, Local 13, for 22 years, has always been the primary caretaker of his family. Wally has always had a passion for old trucks and road trips on his Harley. Unfortunately, this sudden event caused damage to his brain which has caused him to lose function of his right arm and walk at a slow pace,resulting in Wally needing full time care. Cathy, his wife of 35 years, has become his primary caretaker, taking him to and from doctor appointments and therapy. In addition, she has taken on all the everyday responsibilities of running a household. Because Wally needs full time care, Cathy is unable to work. As you can imagine, living as and taking care of a stroke victim can be, in and of itself, a very stressful and painful time. Wally continues to go to therapy in hopes to gain the strength needed to get full function of his arm and leg. He continues to be monitored by his doctors and is on several medications to assist in preventing further strokes or heart damage. In an attempt to relieve some of the stress from Wally and Cathy, their friends and family are hosting a benefit, "Workin' 4 Wally," on Saturday, August 29th, 2009 from 5:00-10:00 p.m. at De La Salle High School, 3434 South Michigan Ave. We, the committee, are seeking your help and prayers. McGuane Park to Host Several Events Pack a picnic and bring the family to McGuane Park on Thursday, August 13 for the annual Movies in the Park! The Express is rated PG and will start at dusk (approximately 8:00 pm) Come enjoy three days of free badminton instruction from Tuesday, August 11 to Thursday, August 13. Youth between the ages of 8 and 14 years old can come to McGuane Park from 3:00-5:00 pm and learn the basics of grip, swing, etiquette, strategy, and more. McGuane Park is located at 2901 S. BCA Religious Education Registration Registration for Religious Education (formerly known as "CCD") classes will take place Sunday, September 13, immediately following 8:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. Masses, as well as Tuesday evening, September 15th. Religious Education is available for public school students in kindergarten through eighth grade. Two years of R.E. is required for the reception of First Holy Communion, and continuity throughout all eight years is required for the sacrament of Confirmation. Weekly classes resume September 22nd. All R.E. classes will take place on Tuesday evenings from 6:00-7:30 p.m. While there is no set fee for registered, practicing parishioners, donations in any amount are gratefully accepted. Naturally, students and their families are expected to participate in the regular practice of their faith. Weekend Masses at Nativity are celebrated Saturday evenings at 5:00 and Sundays at 8:00 a.m., 11:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. All are welcome! Included in these charities is The Chicago Police Department Memorial Fund. This year the game will be played at U.S. Cellular Field on Saturday Sept. 12th. EDITORIAL DEADLINE IS FRIDAY AT 12 NOON WEDNESDAY AUGUST 12, 2009 Velika Gospa Celebration St. Jerome Croatian Catholic Church invites you to join us for the feast of Velika Gospa (Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary) on Saturday, August 15th, 2009 at the parish grounds on 28th and Princeton. This is the 103rd anniversary of our beloved feast day, which has become synonymous with not only the local Croations, but with the Bridgeport neighborhood as well. As always, we encourage friends and neighbors to come throughout the day to celebrate this important religious and social event. The festivities commence at 10 a.m. with a beautiful procession through the streets surrounding the parish. Following the procession, a Solemn High Mass honoring the Blessed Virgin will be celebrated at noon in the church. Masses will also be held at 7:30 a.m., 9 a.m., and 7 p.m. Parishioners and visitors are welcome to gather for a delicious meal of traditional Croatian food including roast lamb and pig, and freshly prepared desserts. Food and drinks will be available throughout the day. In addition to the great food, live music, dancing, an outdoor bar, and games provide not only fun and entertainment for a wonderful summer day, but also a great place to see old friends and neighbors, and meet new people. A raffle will conclude the evening with the grand prize winner taking home 20, Little League Ballpark Renovation Fundraiser Join us Saturday, August 22nd for the Bean Bags Tournament Fundraiser for the Renovation of the Canaryville Little League Ballpark. The Canaryville Little League is proud to announce that due to the success of our last tournament and the many requests we received, we will be organizing our second major Bean Bag fundraising event for the renovation of the Canaryville Little League Ballpark for next year. There will be two age brackets consisting of a 14 and younger tournament along with a 15 and older tournament. Both tournaments will be starting at 2:00pm. Pre-Registration will begin on August 16th at 11:00am and will end promptly on August 22nd at 1:30pm. These Double Elimination tournaments will be 30 per team & Cash Prizes will be given! Please come with a unique team name at registration and prepared to have a great time! BYOB & there will also be a Refreshment Stand to purchase food and soft drinks. The tournament will be located at Nativity of Our Lord Parish, located on 37th and Union. So come and support the revival of this ballpark, join in the bean bag fun and spend time with neighbors. Event schedule is subject to change. Armour Park News On July 23, the Armour Square swim club participated in the Eckhart Park Fun Meet. Michael Nowotnik, Richard Nowotnik, with sister Savannah Rose Rider and Paige Hillock represented Armour Park by swimming in the 25 yard freestyle, 25 yard backstroke & 25 yard breaststroke individual events. Each swimmer qualified in the top 8. Also, on August 4th the same four swimmers with the addition of Emma Ortiz and Andrea Allen competed in an all freestyle swim meet. The 11th Ward Meet consisted of a 25 yard sprint for all participants. All of Armour s swimmers qualified in the top 12. The stand out swimmer of the day was nine year old Paige Hillock, Paige placed 1st with a time of 19 seconds. Velika Gospa Bake Sale On Thursday evening, August 13, 2009, St. Jerome Parish at 2800 S. Princeton will hold its annual bake sale in preparation for the feast of Velika Gospa (Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary). There will be traditional Croatian pastries including povitica (walnut rolls) and homemade apple strudel, which have historically been the featured desserts on holidays and at family gatherings. Along with these specialties, our bakers will provide plenty of other homemade goodies: pound cakes, cakes, cookies, and freshly baked bread. Please mark your calendar and join us for this delicious event! Baked goods will be sold in the school hall from 6 p.m. until the Novena Mass begins at 7 p.m., and again immediately after the Novena Mass. Free English Classes The Daley Public Library, 3400 S. Halsted, offers intermediate level English as a second language classes. Classes are Mondays and Thursdays, 9 am- l2 noon, and 5:30-8:30pm. Starting August 20 you may register at the Daley Library during class hours. Class focuses on improving pronunciation, listening skills, grammar, vocabulary and idioms. All materials are free. Dance Infusion Wins Best Choreographer Award Dance Infusion students have won numerous awards over the years. But, this was the year that our studio was recognized for outstanding choreography. Jennifer Smith and her dancers created a visual illusion to a song entitled, Dare to Dream. During our annual recital and competitive season, our students guided the audience through a magical journey from joy to destruction. The dance began with an incredible dream in which everything was light and beautiful and turned into a dark, dank nightmare. The students, pictured below, brought the dance to life with a dramatic interpretation of amazing choreography. Our Senior Company members include: Iris Barragan, Brittney Bertucci, Briana DeVivo Esmeralda Diaz, Lucero Diaz, Karli Ferro, Ariel Gomez and Rachel Otero. The students won the following awards for their performance this competitive season: High Gold; 2 Platinum Awards; 1st Place Overall High Scoring Teen Small Group; a Special Performance Award; Highest Scoring Teen Group, and a Drama Award. At two regional events instructor, Jennifer Smith was presented with Best Choreographer awards. It was an outstanding honor to be recognized on a regional level. We have dance classes for everyone, from the tiniest tot to adults. Open house and registration will be held on Tuesday, August 25, 2009 from 6:00-8:00 pm.
